I find it difficult enough to work out what the time is anywhere else in the world as it is, but I get even more confused when I receive invitations to parties etc in SL saying they start at 12am or 12 pm.

So I would like to say sorry in advance to anybody who thinks I have snubbed them because I have been 12 hours late (or early!) because they haven't said midnight or noon.

It wouldn't be too difficult to do it though, would it?

Pep (Of course which day would midnight refer to - the one before or the one after?)

Good point Pep.

I always make a point to include AM/PM and SLT in my notices.

BTW: Thanks for attending the pool party at 4PM SLT. :-)

As a side note, the 24-hour notation uses the convention that 24:00 and 0:00 refers to the same point in time, but belonging to two different dates.
While we're at it, please don't use the "two numbers divided by a slash" notation for dates. It's massively confusing, since you never know if it's the American notation (month/day) or the European (day/month). Please write the month with letters.

Not just me. Better get enough wigs for the US Government if the Wikipedia article is anything to go by.

the real question, is it at 12am/12pm their time, or SL time?

So immediately after 11.59pm it becomes 12am , not 12 pm?

From: Wikipedia

In the United States, noon is often called "12:00 p.m." and midnight "12:00 a.m.". With this convention, thinking of "12" as "0" makes the system completely logical.

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (Fourth Edition, 2000) has a similar usage note on this topic: "Strictly speaking, 12 a.m. denotes midnight, and 12 p.m. denotes noon, but there is sufficient confusion over these uses to make it advisable to use 12 noon and 12 midnight where clarity is required

Pep (I actually agree that 12pm should be midnight, but I am never sure that the party givers mean that)

No, it is quite logical. The morning has to start somewhere. At midnight, we click over into the next day, which begins at 12:00 am.

But I think the 24 hour system is more logical still, and you can get rid of that ugly colon between hours and minutes. One of the few really laudable things invented by the military.

11am then by convention comes 12pm, it gets no harder and if it is then you're thinking about it too much :)

Since 12PM means, literally, 12 hours after noon, this also works for midnight. Same for 12AM, 12 hours before noon. It's because of this ambiguity that the recommended references are 12 noon and 12 midnight.

The thing that really bends my mind is when it's already way into the next day on the other side of the world.

I thought the next day began at 00:00:01

Make all times HHMM GMT

That's what GMT is for - a reference that can be used by people in any timezone.
