For god sake LindenLabs, Clean up those places !!! You really think your fancy new Secondlife home page is going to make any difference in attracting new members when they login and discover what I was spammed with today??? What future growth will there be while thats going on.

You have been here three years and it's the first time this happened? You don't get out much do you?

I have had no reason to go to a welcome area before.

Haven't you heard - according to all the publicity, SL is all about sex anyway. Sounds like the perfect greeting for those that come looking for that.

*sighs* And LL wonders why the new user retention is so low. Really, LL needs to post a G-Team Linden at each one just to prevent crap like that.

In other words, it's not bloody likely. They used to do it, until the population got too large.

Honestly I think people should lighten up. I mean do you really see any people being angry or vicious when they grief in the Welcome Areas? No usually it's griefing through sheer absurdity. I laugh at naked people in the welcome area. I hand them penises and a landmark. When I see particles I say "woo it's a party!" The welcome area is a block party on the Vegas strip with showgirls and pyrotechnics. Just enjoy the spectacle.

Many times, I have enjoyed just sitting at the end of the tram line in Dore and watching the action.

My original "home" welcome area is Iris - very boring...

I agree.

I agree with that, too. It would mean hiring a couple of extra workers. And they're going to make a million blog posts about how they WISH new user retention were better, before they go to that particular expense.

The welcome area's are quite bad. Ahern and Waterhead are effectively the trailerparks of Second Life. There are plans to fix this, however.. *bites tongue at this point*.

Soap, LL's idea of "fixing" it will involve do away with Welcome areas completely, because they don't scale and make baby Lindens cry.

Given past decisions for LL, if they do keep the idea of welcome areas, then they'll rely on resident created and maintained welcome areas, passing the onus of policing and creating off onto the residents. Might increase retention, until some power-tripper ruins the barrel...

Or, they could hire a set of G-Team Lindens to police the welcome areas and if not that, then give a carefully vetted group of residents power to at least eject griefers from the welcome areas. Since we already know they aren't going to hire more Lindens for patrolling and they have said they aren't going to give residents that kind of power... plus, they are already "testing" resident run welcome areas... guess which one wins.

It would appear so, given the Helfell and Hyanisport infohubs are unimplemented ghost towns, the Hau Koda hub lies uncompleted, and the Nautilus infohub was discussed, but never allocated for.

Avery,

SL Mentors are residents, just like anyone else. They have no special powers, and no special "pull" with the Lindens. There's not a darn thing they can do to clean up the griefing and swearing and general carrying-on at Welcome Areas. They are there to help YOU...not to act as police.

If something upsets you so badly you want to report it as abuse...go right ahead. It's your privilege, and your duty as a good citizen of Second Life. But chat spam and foul language are very petty concerns...don't be surprised if nothing comes of your Abuse Report.

Or you can do what I recommend to all my other new residents: Use Search to find some place of interest to you, and leave the noisy and crowded Welcome Area as quickly as possible.

I logged in as a new alt of color. was sent to korea welcome area and imedialy called every racist name over and over BY a MENTOR and her girlfriend both, I ignored them and proceeded to put on my new hair.. its nice to have many PCs and log on as a seasoned Avatar to do the ARs... as well as 15 YES 15 bite request thats the worst the darn bloodlines crap

and a side note went to NCI (one that was on a spammed note card) and same thing N***er etc...

the swearing in PG meh.. I could care less the caging is kind of funny ... the nudity as well funny even the "party" like gestures going off over and over funny, I don't go to these places often can't even really chat, I used to go help newbies with starting out not anymore..

but stuff like racist remarks are just wrong (.) and it gives this global community a really bade taste. I( can imagine what a day one or two noob would feel if they chose a avatar that represented them in RL, and got that.

Question: Did these things come as IMs, or in open chat? On the rare occasions I've mustered the courage to go back to a Welcome Area, they've been inane but relatively benign. That is to say, I've not seen this particularly offensive stuff in chat... and so I've wondered how much worse the IM experience is for newer residents.

It certainly is wrong. You should AR any Mentor who treats you in this fashion. Are you SURE it was a mentor? They have the group tag "SL Mentor" immediately above their name, in the same font and color as the avatar name. Some pretenders use a "titler" that display any darn thing they want in a separate line of text (no brown background).

NOTE: When posting ARs, you should be careful to be sure that you are in the right. Make sure that you did nothing to provoke or encourage the abuse. Paste a portion of the chat log or the IM traffic to your AR...you don't need to include everything, as Linden Lab will check their master logs (because pasted logs can be so easily doctored).
