Question regarding annoying people & building

Most of my friends with few exceptions are Females here.
I am far from perfect but I try to be polite and focus on creating.
I spend time with few few friends.
Recently I befriended this guy few weeks back.
I am feeling cranky due to real life stuff and just want to do few texture experiments
and build this idea I have for a doodle garden.
He said had ew minor things that made me wonder about him but then he really
got annoying the last few days.
I told him I was tired and had few things to do he didn't seem to get the hint.
He followed me where I was working and started going on about how full bright doesn't
look right to him, how I should run this script,etc.
I was polite at first I told him it was the tree was too dark not full bright.
And I didn't have time to run the transparency script....truthfully I didn't think it would
make much difference.
I told him I was just testing something but I was very good at asking for advise when
I needed it.
Then today he is going on about how my test grid textures set at regular setting are
too stretched out causing lag, that my friends flexible skirt causing lag, that he
thinks I should allow him to buy me out because what I am doing i.e the unfinished
building is ugly and ruining the sim,etc.
He even said that hollowed 10x10x10 box would do this bounding thing messing
up the camera.
My friend tried whatever he was describing but we didn't understand whatever he
was saying.
Anyway it got progressively worse guy started acting more and more of jerk.
I politely said I was experimenting, tried to be polite but finally I snapped at him said
he was full of it.
My friend got so upset she had to leave because of him going on about her flexible skirt.
Finally just said good bye and muted him.
I just got fed up and he didn't seem to get point he was crossing the line.
What else could I have done?
Is there any truth that hollow square prim or bounding thing that he was going on that he
said will cause camera issues?
Does total clear texture really cause loading issues versus using a transparency script?
Anyone have interesting story of someone that upset you?
How did you deal with it?

I think by DEFCON 2 he finally got the message. Don't tolerate rudeness FD.

At times you just have to be blunt, and use the mute button and be done with it

& don't feel bad about it! Some times you really do have to tell ppls.
Some times I don't have the emo resources to deal w/ ppls always and enjoy my alone fiddling time.
I badly multitask working irl and have my own routines, ppls I want to talk to or RL is visiting or in a class and have had to tell invading, mass teleport sending ppls "the deal" w/ and I'll catchup w/ you later (or not hee!)

They might whine or make lamer sad faces or go off, screw them.
Keep your peace.

I've met people like that in sandboxes - they spout a lot of advice but often it's ill-informed. Often they are a sub-group one might call 'know-all newbies' who pontificate on the basis of scraps of knowledge they've picked up from other computer games that may have no relevance to SL.

Yeah I don't multi-task well.
I get overwhelmed really really easily
I have done building projects with others where it's fun people talking,etc
helping each other out.
Then even with those people there gets a point where sometimes even the people
I do truly like it can get to point where I get cranky and same old comments like isn't this fun for 100th time starts to feel like fingers scraping chalkboard...
even with someone I like very much can get annoying but at least those friends
we can talk about it and laugh it off.
Yet I have also been with friend that we are doing projects they go totally Afk and its like
I am like talking to myself. LOL
Other time I just want to space out, create and I don't want you should do this, you're doing that wrong, blah, blah, blah didity blah.
And it's like how many times can you say hey I am experimenting, I don't need help when you want to say Shut up, back the F off for bit or I will permanently mute you're fricking mouth forever in polite way before you want to erase their finger and mouth pixels?
Or No I don't want advise from someone who doesn't make their own products or uses some device that copies things in full permissions...no I just want to create, no I don't want copy of your store and be clone of everyone else either.
I have hard enough time with my own perfectionism I don't need someone who got some skills but doesn't know everything telling me what to do nonstop every time I log in.
Grr...

FD - you are unfailingly polite. You didn't ask for advice and even told him to stop- what else could you have done? Nah- don't worry about it.

I suspect this may be why he took such an interest in your builds. Especially if he (or an alt) already owns other property in the sim.For both of these, the answer is maybe, a little.

The inside surface of a hollow prim can be a difficult face from which to alt-zoom. This is hardly unique to hollowed surfaces, though. For example, try alt-zooming from the sheared face of a fully top-sheared cube for a (usually) wild ride. Another possibility is that he's found that hollowed prims are especially effective at triggering weird cam behavior inside--but actually, *any* prim is causing weird cam behavior lately: your cam position can be well on one side of the prim, but somehow alt-zooming will catch the surface of the prim behind it. And getting the cam too close to a prim can start a fun little bouncing back-and-forth thing with the cam as it tries to decide which side it's on (I guess). I know the viewer developers have been making changes to the cam positioning code in recent releases, trying to make it behave more intuitively, but it seems like a "work in progress" from the results I'm seeing in the released and RC viewer.

Transparency by script or by texture is a topic I wish a true rendering expert would weigh in on. At the minimum, a script can make a surface fully transparent without requiring any specific texture at all, so that avoids the need for the viewer to download one of the far too many different "full alpha" textures that different builders use. But those are usually really small textures, so it's not like it's gonna fill the sim's image download queue or anything. The big question for rendering experts, though, is whether the client renders surfaces AT ALL that have been set to 0.0 alpha by script. It sort of has to render a full-alpha *texture* because it would be way too difficult to inspect the alpha channel values for every pixel in a texture to be sure it's really all transparent (in contrast to being told explicitly that the whole surface is 0.0 alpha). But I've seen conflicting reports on whether or not there's any difference in the rendering process. Again, though, this would be barely perceptible, if at all, unless a build had a huge number of fully transparent surfaces.

He knew what I built before he ever told me about the lot I got in first place.
It was only when I did want his duplicate building he started acting even stranger.
Telling me I should focus on clothes instead of buildings, art,etc.
Yet I got a whole lot of other friends saying I should stick to the art.
He consider this building ugly because of the flowers.

You were clear about wanting to be left alone to work. He ignored it. You were very polite. It takes a while for some people to realize that they aren't the boss of the world.

Build whatever interests you. We all have to start somewhere, and it takes practice to improve.

For questions like the transparency or camera bounds, why not take them to the content creation forums? I know there's camera and alpha glitch issues related to hollowed or cut prims, but they can explain it far better than I can.

Truthfully sometimes when I ask questions there no one answers them or it can take literally days for response.
I occasionally still post there but not often because of this.
If anyone knows stuff like that they are here complaining about the SL or talking about other stuff.

Sidewalk superintendents annoy the hell out of me.

I had one person with whom I was very slightly acquainted show up in the middle of building our skybox club (which was being done by a very talented builder, with some minor assistance from me).

He started going on about how it was a bad idea to use megaprims on the mainland, and passed me this notecard that was a long treatise on megaprims that contained a good bit of hearsay and false information. Of course, the entire club was one huge spherical megaprim...what the hell did he expect me to do? Put a "FAIL" sign on my award-winning builder's forehead and send him home?

Occasionally I will get a comment that's helpful, like, "Maybe try a bluer texture on that?" or "This join is a little misaligned." I don't mind that. It's when someone decides They Kniow What's Best and tries to steer me in a completely different direction that I get peevish.

Not that it's any of my business either - but from here the building looks pretty darn cool- I would love to see it up close. Will you be in tonight? I looked for you last night but didn't see you.

This question is hard to answer for me, as usually I am the annoying person.

On a serious note: I admire your patience. Once I had a couple of weirdo's on a parcel I had for sale, who started attacking me with blades. After a few laughs I froze them. After a few more laughs I booted their asses. Even the girl. She had the prettiest ass of the two, but I don't like to be harrassed in the way she did. There are better ways.

Sounds like you found someone who was both "the lonely guy" and "the random jackass" all rolled up into one.

My SL partner and I certainly met "that guy" last night when we were in World of Warcraft. She and I were off to do a quest and this fellow follows us, BEGGING to go questing with us for some reason. I said okay since he had a quest we were about to do. They guy was a TOTAL SPAZ. I will save you the geekish WoW lingo, but basically he was off attacking things that didn't need to be attacked, and then IMming me and my partner to help him fight these creatures that HE ATTACKED when we were busy completing the quest. At some point he got annoyed that we weren't answering his IMs so he left the group... and like 2 minutes later he was IMming me again asking to be re-invited. I said no and he insulted me (big surprise), so I put him on ignore, and I thought that was that. BUT NO. After Kel and I finished the quest we ran off to do our next one, and the guy tags along, shadowing us for at least the next half hour. I don't know if he tried to say anything since I had him muted. He eventually vanished. (My guess? His parents caught him on the computer after bedtime.)

Ugh yeah I guess I am going to have to pass you on my secret identities well not to secret...
That was build I did with my alt Dagon Grimm the really major ancient noob and my few friends that I mentioned you putting some clothes in but got another one friends and I are working on in this image....
One building though I don't like perhaps it is bit ugly, etc.
Yet its not done, not even textured yet.

if Im concentrating on building I find wearing floating text saying that.... "If Im building Im ignoring you" works quiet well.

if he thinks it is ugly then to him it is ugly

that doesn't mean everyone will find it ugly

and it sure as hell doesn't mean you have to remove it

(take for example a recent creation of mine, some folks would say it is nice, others would say it sucks and then others would say change this change that, but will I change or remove it because of those who feel that way?... nope)

FD, without reading all the replies and followups, my impression was negative about him, and positive about you.

i imagine he goes around befriending people and see how long it takes to annoy them and become muted. he's probably alraedy on to his next victim... altho, i expect he'll be back to see if you are weak and can bait you some more. just his little game.

keep him muted, and ban him from your property. you handled it better than i would have. certainly.

I was having very lousy few days and the situation just added more ick...
Anyway it is probably to go onward and upward trudging road of happy prims and focus on the doodles trees and stuff I am making.
Trying to figure out San Fransico styled building if it was converted into the corner groceries right now for West Haven lot.
Few friends and I are trying to reproduce this image in prims in our own ways for fun that is no more then 30 to 40 prims fits in 512m lot.

The advice he gave, while sorta right, is like calling a dripping faucet a flood. A flexi skirt isn't gonna kill your sim. A transparent texture isn't gonna either, an a hollow bounding isn't that big a deal.

Sure, too, he has a right to complain. You also have all the right in the world to ban/mute/etc. Your land, your rules. If I can coexist with my neighbor's build (and in this case, I'm not so much talking about the stuff in the stable, but the big, bland, gray castle walls), then he can learn to "deal" with a build he deems as ugly. Like I said, your land.

There's a guy like this who often visits my cafe. One day he spent about 10 minutes telling me "you should build this" and "you should build that" and "you should redesign the bar so it looks like something completely different." Eventually I just said "Hey, why don't you open a cafe of your own and make it just how you want it?" It put a stop to the suggestions.
