Hello,
I've been on SL for about seven months and met many wonderful people. There's around 40 people on my Friends List, and I interact with about half of them regularly. I have noticed a pattern about my Friends: they are all from the midwest, Canada, or rural or semi-rural areas in various states. None of my friends are from big cities. Only a few are from densely populated suburbs, which is the type of area in which I lived for decades. My burbs were very close to the city.
I find all of this both surprising and interesting. Evidently, I relate better, generally, to "country" folks than "city dwellers," even though I lived in densely populated areas for most of my life.
This is one of the great things about SL: It helps you learn about yourself, regardless of your RL age.
I am just curious to know, if you are surprised at the type of people you relate to and have become friends with, as a result of having the opportunity to interact with all types of people from all walks of life.
Sincerely, Avanti

I was amazed at the number of sexual deviants I have become friends with. I thought I was the only one.

So many of my dearest SL friends are wacky pervy types that I would probably run screaming from in real life (i'm a little prude) but I have grown to love being around them so much here in sl. Love this place.

Strangely if I say "I'm normal can I be your friend" that's more scary than anyone proclaiming to be a perv or deviant, yes?

From: Dekka Raymaker Strangely if I say "I'm normal can I be your friend" that's more scary than anyone proclaiming to be a perv or deviant, yes? That's because normal people are out having real lives, not playing SL - sexual deviants value honesty; being in denial about it will get you nowhere.

Me? I...

My friends list is rather diverse lol.. mena dn women in RL, cities, out in the country, about.. 8 different countries on 3 or 4 continents, I know owners of non-profit organizations, big business people, really old, really young in the middle... various states.... various languages (Babbler might suck but it helps lol)
What I am surprised about honestly is how many of my friends lead a BDSM lifestyle in SL. I mean.. sure the ones I meet at CARP and Bondage Ranch make sense, but like.. before that, before I knew about those places, just wandering around meeting new people and making friends I apparently got to know a lot of Dom/mes and submissives.. definitely the majority of my friends I'd say...
But I love all of my friends =P

I'd say about half the people on my friends list are Muslim. Re: big cities/small towns, I'd say it's about evenly matched.

I intentionally avoid knowing more than I absolutely must about the RL lives of my SL friends, or disclosing any more to them about myself than is necessary. For me, friendship in SL is a relationship between the characters I create and the characters they create, to always be taken at face value. It matters not at all to me what their RL gender or financial circumstances are, as I have no intention of crossing the line into RL interactions, beyond general platonic friendship. Yet some things, like what country and time zone they live in, come up unavoidably. It's hard to coordinate an RP if the person you are trying to reach is in Rome, and you're in the USA, and neither of you realizes the time difference! What little I do know is that my SL friends are from all over the world, and live in many countries. Most are well-educated, or are at this time seeking a higher education. Most are younger than I am. In the few cases where I know their RL gender, most are male, but a few are really female in RL. The ones I most like to spend time with are literate and can express themselves very well in text. People who have poor grammar or whose replies in RP are severely brief don't get much interest from me. I can certainly excuse a typo here and there, or gramatical mistakes caused by the speaker being from a foreign country. I make more than my fair share of typos. But it's pretty easy to tell the difference between a mistyped letter here and there, and chatspeak or just plain poor grammar. And yes, a large number of my friends here participate in more kinks than I would in RL. Some of the things Ceera does in SL my Player would never dream of doing in RL. But that is one of the cool things about SL. You can experiment with being 'someone else', with very low self-risk.

too many to keep track of where they are from
I would say that the one thing they all have in common, is they are nice folks
*shrug*

I've noticed I have more close male friends than female friends in SL than I do in real life, and it's not the everyone is beautiful thing, it's that for some reason I'm relating to the guys in SL better than the women I meet. That being said, I dragged my two closest female friends into SL when I joined two years ago. We now all live far from each other, so we enjoy being able to hang out in world since we can't in real life. So I have two close RL female friends and several close male friends ...and I met my husband in SL Also, I'm using "friend" to mean people I talk with on a regular basis and who I am--or would be--entirely comfortable hanging out with in real life. Interestingly, there aren't many commonalities among my friends though they all get along if we happen to gather them together. There are writers, musicians, demons, Dommes, subs, Goreans, furries, live music hosts, fashionistas, developers, designers, builders, island owners, radio station owners/DJs, oldbies, newbies, etc.

My friendslist comprises humans and a few foxes, males and females, probably from all over the universe (some I know where they're from, many I don't). The only two things they all have in common are that they're all older than me and they're all very very nice.

The friends I have in SL are the exact same type of people I'd like to hang out with in RL. I just can't hang out with them in RL because they live all over the globe. So I guess the answer is no, I'm not surprised.

People from all over, people of all types. But there do seem to be a lot of Australians in the mix, somehow.

Most of my friends are guys who offer friendship and then keep IM'ing to ask if I'm free. I have a very impressive collection of excuses. Most of these guys fall by the wayside and I quietly drop them from the list. Other friends are neighbouring landowners and even one person I 'friended' by mistake! Being a bit of a free spirit, I never got into friends big-time, I just interact with the people I'm with at any time and hope I eventually get famous LOL. But maybe a circle of good friends might be my future project in SL.

Sexual deviant's R US (Me too)
11-28-2007 13:53
Most of the friend’s on my lists are women from every part of the world, who seem to have several things in common; they love to have fun, and are great to be around. Diverse is an understatement...some are angels, others are devils. Some are aliens, others are human, and others are furies (mmmm so warm and cuddly) others still, are robots. Because I am a sexually active guy both in SL & in RL, I don’t have a SL partner (or drama) anymore. I enjoy meeting new women and listening to what their needs, desires, and fantasies are; what happens after that is usually up to them. They have taught me one thing, to be honest without fear, to express my true self, and my true desires. I am not a hopeless romantic, but a helpless one; I see SL as a sort of Hotel California where I can check out any time I like, but I just can’t ever leave...the irresistible magnet keeps drawing me. It’s almost too hard to not meet lusty women, they seem to be everywhere. The other night I was up until 5AM; everywhere I went I kept bumping into gorgeous creatures that were looking for a good time, three of them wound up with me that night. It looks like I'm fast becoming a sexual deviant too..... Would it be too much trouble for me to ask for professional help, or should I just give in to fate???

Wow.
... 'cause ... in FL, that just transforms me into one of their girlfriends. Sure beats using all those corny pick up lines; I find that the women I talk to, like for a guy to listen to them. One learns a lot when they use their 'two' ears instead of their 'one' mouth. And no, I am not looking for any girlfriends, just a good time with women who are looking for a good time as casual friends. Most of the time after a little conversation I can tell, but I have been surprised by a few women who turn out to be drama queens. I had to whittle down my friend's list and put several on ignore... they were an exception to the rule...peace.

From: Conan Godwin I was amazed at the number of sexual deviants I have become friends with. I thought I was the only one. NOPE!! And you havent been to our monthly meetings for Sexual Deviants lately!! Oddly enough, most of the people on my Friends List are RL Females, yet in RL I dont have female friends (my fiancee doesnt count). The only reason I can think of is, I'm not in SL hitting on women. 'Course thats not to say I havent swung my camera around for an up-the-skirt-panty check once in a while....

funny half (more?) my friends are Europeans... UK, France, Germany, Denmark... one or 2 from Isreal, another few from east aisa.....
and it's weird how many 'big names' I used to hang with years back, that I don't ever get to talk to anymore...
very eclectic crowd I run with, lots of builders, scripters, BDSMers, queer folk of all sorts...
part I guess would be the odd hours I keep, part would be I like people that have odd interests (I find it inspiring to learn new things), and part would be my "it's all good if no one is hurt by it" mentality.
I seem to be the least 'normal' outwardly of all my friends.... which is funny because I think I may be the most 'normal' inwardly =)

I am creative loner. I have few very nice friends who are very helpful and kind to me. The rest who end up on my friend list often find themself off of my friend list except few because I never hear from them or whatever is going on in my own life and there's makes it difficult to connect. I am not here for sex or roleplaying personally and what I share about myself is the truth but I have friends I know who don't share rl information that is ok. I try to keep my friend list low it just makes things easier very few remain there for long except small chosen group.
