I feel kind of bad about asking this at a time when it surely appears that the sl infrastructure is falling around our ears like bridges in Minneapolis, but I need help. About the time I downloaded the current viewer (Second Life 1.21.6 (99587) Oct 14 2008 ) I began to experience problems with a low fps and an inability to use FRAPS to film for any amount of time without crashing SL to Windows. It could be that it has to do with other issues, but I have improved my pc's performance without having any effect on this problem.
The viewer before that (the one with security problems) had constant memory leaks...
The new RC won't run at all on my pc.
Is there another alternative to all of these that would get me back on track with a decent fps and some stability?
ty, ty, clever folks....

Kirsten viewer, Cool viewer and Nicholaz all seem to usually perform better than the SL ones.

has hemicylinders, has an added option to slice prims which is sorta like reducing Z but hard to explain, also can make prims below .050 you can go down to .001

OK, the good news is the Kirsten viewer downloaded and runs (both!), and my camera control is back (yay!) (it was doing really weird stuff like swinging wildly), but....the graphics quality is off. It's breaking up, rather like distant structures when your draw rate is low. wtf is that? I've nailed the custom Graphics sliders in Preferences. No diff. Help?

You can try the OnRez client. I think it's pretty old but it works. http://viewer.onrez.com/

Ive tried other viewers but they dont hold a candle to kirstens at the moment. the ability to make smaller than .050 prims built in avatar scanner (world -> scanner) for kirsten viewers shadows can be enabled on it. better memory useage and higher fps than the normal viewer with same graphics. lots of other features as well that just stand out better than others. here is a list of more features oh yea love the built in texture previewer in thumbnail format. nothing beats it imo. 1) The Fastest Rendering Viewer in SL, and it's really quick both on start up and rendering in world even in laggy sims, the comments from users have ranged from 'wow' to 'bloody hell!' It uses a mixture of code from various viewers, bit of a hybrid really. 2) New UI skins, with clearer Fonts (and no licensing issues.) 3) Avatar Scanner - Scan up to 500 meters and across sim borders, brings up names and distance. Allows viewing of profiles and teleporting of friends. 4) Asset Browser - View every texture and photo in your inventory preview, or use the asset browser to apply the textures directly to builds via drag and drop. 5) More Prim manipulation different ways to cut prims in SL, and on opengrids micro and monster prim creation. 6) Some severe modification to what information is sent by the viewer when active - no sending of stats to a grid, such as FPS, Lang and version etc. 7) Modified network system viewerside. Very low memory footprint runs much better on marginal hardware (older laptops) even runs on the Intel Atom-based Ultra Portables - Great for running multiple clients if needed. 9) Stable - Incorporated fixes that were either not used by Linden Lab or have come from sources not working directly on SL viewers such as RealXtend.

From: Kiboe Munro dazzle, nuff said, doesn't have windlight or any of the fancy s**t Dazzle was the codename for the client currently in circulation. The lastest release client has no codename, as far as I know. Dazzle includes everything windlight had. So all dazzle was, was windlight with a new UI and lots of stability fixes. LL has to think up new ways to keep is developers on the payroll, lol.

Hey, what's the situation with Nvidia drivers and the Kirsten? Still nothing higher than the 175 series same as the LL viewer?

From: Cito Karu shadows can be enabled on it. In the S16 viewer? I think that's only in the Shadowdraft viewers.

from instructions
Just as a sidenote, to enable shadows you need to access the advanced menu ,debug settings set renderUseFBO = TRUE , and then renderdefered = TRUE.

I downloaded Kirsten's to the desktop. Are there any installation instructions or just a simple install?

audit of the viewer
01-18-2009 22:56
This Kristenlee viewer sounds very interesting and I would like to try it!
Has anyone verified that it does not contain any malware?
Any viewer like this has access to everything you do, can record and spy on you, has your passwords, can "phone home" or anywhere with your private info, can spend your Linden dollars directly or access your credit card (since it has your login), and could load other software onto your system to do anything. You have to seriously trust this piece of software.
So I'm wondering, who is this person, and has anyone audited the source code to make sure there's nothing funky in it, and then verified that the downloaded binary corresponds to the audited source code?
Because I was just about to download it and run it, all excited, when this occurred to me. (So I hope someone can answer my question and I can fire this thing up with peace of mind!)

I've been running kirsten viewer last few days as well as couple of my friends and it's much much faster with the same level of graphics as the normal viewer. Of course after a long period of time it does same thing as every viewer I have tried that is slowly starts using more and more memory, but seems to last longer than the normal viewer. After about 2 hours the client climbed to 1.2 gigs of ram while the normal viewer would hit that in an hour for me. The tools it has is very very nice as I posted previously the build in scanner, built in texture viewer, etc is very very sweet. As well as some new build tools such as Slice, added hemicylinder, and the ability to size down to .001 on sandbox i frequent with normal viewer I would get 14 to 18 fps with kirsten viewer I get 25-32. You can find the blog about Kirsten viewer here: http://kirstenleecinquetti.blogspot.com/ You can download the latest client S16 here: http://www.armyof4.com/Kirstenlee/SecondLife/ I ran virus scanner on it, checked clear, I also kept eye on netstat -a with client running and it did not use any other ports other than what the default sl viewer uses. Of course that's just so far everything seems clean as a whistle and no complaints from anyone I've heard. Everyone seems to have a better time with it. And again here is a list of features for the Kirsten viewer: KirstenLee Notes on S16 1) The Fastest Rendering Viewer in SL, and it's really quick both on start up and rendering in world even in laggy sims, the comments from users have ranged from 'wow' to 'bloody hell!' It uses a mixture of code from various viewers, bit of a hybrid really. 2) New UI skins, with clearer Fonts (and no licensing issues.) 3) Avatar Scanner - Scan up to 500 meters and across sim borders, brings up names and distance.
