German High Court decides: Age verification by ID-card number not safe enough

Now I'm curious if LL will continue with their planned introduction of age verification or if they will change their plans towards a more secure variant. The court mentions especially the procedures known in Germany as "Post-Ident" - you have to sign a paper at a post office while showing your ID card there.

That is an interesting development indeed... thanks for the heads up.

Not happy about Linden Labs purchase of XStreet (formerly SLX) and OnRez. Will this mean LL will ban resident run online shoping outlets in favor of their own?

Prima!

Somehow I doubt LL is going to change its approach to the postal method referenced by the BGH, but it's interesting.

My German is awful, even reading. Is there any hint what option LL could follow to pass muster? I mean, other than just making it impossible for German residents to age-verify and hence barring them from restricted-content parcels?

LL has done that already.. now, we'll see if they manage to set fire to the barn too!

Right now, I can't read German, but if LL is so gung-ho about following other countries requirements, they'll have to figure it out.. for themselves, I guess.

Here we go again.

I don't think for one second LL *want* to do this any more than the company I work for wants to turn away cash from the States, Canada etc ... but we have to, to be in compliance with regulations.

They are already changing things such that they can have different login procedures for users in the future.

In other words, more than just the name and password.

I doubt it will affect anyone in the United States, but will likely allow the sort of security measures required by various other countries.

Is age-verification *technically* b0rked at the moment?
10-19-2007 06:57
I just kinda woke-up to the fact that I'm concierge level now (how did *that* happen? :o ), so decided to try to age-verify. I get the link from the account summary page (my impoverished alt doesn't), but it goes to an empty page right now. Suppose this is a question for support? Or might LL have "tabled" this exercise for the moment? (Has there been an announcement that I missed?) Or am I just confused how this is supposed to work?

It was being 'trialled' ... maybe that's why.

Yep: Jack Linden just confirmed during his office hours: it's just a "trial" and goes up and down. Another juicy conspiracy theory bites the dust.

Right now it is very difficult to see what the consequences for LL will be. The only thing that *is* clear is that age verification based on the process they had planned won't give LL safety from being brought to court.

OTOH the court has ruled in a case of a firm that offered real online p0rn. I'm not sure if the rulings could be unaltered used to decide a case against LL.

Nice being Concierge innit :) Jack is always very helpful.

It annoys me a bit, actually, that I pay Concierge level just not directly to Linden. Technically speaking I own about 38K of land.

Does this really impact LL? Since LL is farming this work out to Aristotle, it's Atistotles problem, not LLs.

Supposedly, Aristotle knows the rules for most countries and requires whatever is "appropriate" for the country you're in - if Germany changes their laws, it's up to Aristotle to change their methods.

Or am I once again missing something here?

Probably not too much directly, other than annoyed residents contacting them.

No matter what Age verification scheme they come up with someone somewhere will say its not good enough.

In a couple of years after this current age verification plan, we'll have another, more intrusive one.

and so on ..

This will continue ad naseum until people realize the kids live in their parent's house and the perfect solution to controlling minor's online activity is to tell the parent doing the complaining to watch their own kids.
