When is it a good idea NOT to engage?

I think this thread should be safe, considering there are 'people' who have me on ignore! Well, one person. Well, one twat. Anyways........

So, in the interests of furthering debate, when should it be clear that one is dealing with what I think is technically known as a fruitloop, and it might be pointless to try to enter into any form of dialogue? Or should we press on regardless because, let's face it, mad people are funny, and if they have an appetite for argument is it far to deprive them?

I'll kick off, shall I?

It only becomes pointless when the men in white coats are actually at the ( basement ) door. Up to then, it is valid to refute the many and various bonkers claims put forward, always assuming we still give a shit.

The answer to your question is, when it's me at the other end.

Nobody has a chance when I'm arguing against their views. As one forum regular put it, "He'll keep going all day without even breaking sweat." - something like that. That was her response to someone suggesting that they come to this forum and argue it out with me :D

Once it becomes clear that the other side has zero interest in having a rational debate with the goal of reaching a consensus or at least an understanding, my interest in a topic evaporates.

It's like arguing religion. Discussing the various points is one thing. Trying to convert the masses by force is something else entirely.

I find it's often useless and a waste of time to engage in long winded debates in the forums and it boils down to egos wanting to prove that they are right. In the big scheme of things, you rarely change minds and it often makes little difference in what you end up saying in many cases. As I take my last few breaths on my death bed, shitting myself in my adult diapers, will I really be worrying about having gotten in that last word in the SL forums? Probably not.

Then again, you could just spray yourself with colloidal silver and get miraculously cured and then resume the fighting. :p

Sometimes it is not about engaging them, and you end up writing for the rest of the audience.

There are people I know are never going to come around, but I will reply so that it is clear to everyone else that they are irrational.

That's why I reply too.

Naa ... I enjoy a good 'debate' and I'm usually disappointed when they come to an end. Jack and his bot policy has a *lot* to answer for! And don't forget that, while the other person isn't coming round, neither are you ;)

I don't have to, because I'm always right. I am the voice of reason.

Actually, I have changed my mind on some issues.

Yep. "Some threads" (/me glares at another thread around here) just seem to go on and on with zero progress, though. Those don't do anything for me. Once you've established that the person you're arguing with has gone totally burser, it's time to move on. IMO, anyway.

I can't even get into a good 'debate' here these days. Every bot thread dies soon after birth. People actually talk to me at the Cartel Hangout and, when that happens, it's *really* become bad. I suppose I could start selling temp rezzers again and see if that would drum up some heated arguments.

Let's have another go...

I currently have 10 bots, 24/7, on my store's land, which is set to show in search. They improve my traffic so much that I'm consistently in the top few Places tab rankings, and most of my competitors are pushed down because of them. I don't care what people here think of them - they are staying. If you disagree with me having them, then *you* are wong!

A wise and sensible approach.

Talk about temp rezzers again. I was trying to remember everything when talking to a resident of mine that's acquired one, and could not remember it all. Just give me the salient points about them.

Temp rezzers (THEY ARE *REALLY* GOOD! EVERYONE SHOULD USE THEM!):

They are a single prim, into which is put copyable items. Approximately every minute, the temp rezzer rezzes the items as temporary objects. It does it a few seconds before the previous set of temp objects is cleaned away by the SL system, giving the appearance of permanent objects, so, for a few seconds each minute, double the number of temp objects are rezzed.

Furniture is a typical type of item to put into them. The benefit is that temporary objects don't count against the parcel's prim limit, so the apparently permanent objects are rezzed for the cost of just 1 prim :)

ETA:
From a landlord's point of view, they are not good because the temp prims are included in the tenant's number in the Land box and the landlord has no way of knowing how many of the tenant's prims are permanent and how many are temporary - they could all be permanent, way over the tenant's limit, and you could think that many of them are temporary.

You could watch the numbers change every minute in the Land box to see how many are being added, but a landlord/lady shouldn't need to be doing that.

What a good idea. Child bots on sex beds ought to cause a stir here - something I can defend vigorously :D

That was a typo on the record label. It was meant to be "Cum Together".

I too like a good healthy discussion. However when the 'fruitloop' over-steps what I consider to be the boundary of sensibility, then I just shrug and move on. Discussion terminated. Some people will continue to diatribe, until they are blue in the face. Everyone has a drum to bang, one of my relatives is like that. I just let this person bang on until my little brain says ummmm....no, actually that's just plain stupid, does not compute bye-bye.
