I would say look around SL at some existing RPs. Figure out what you think works for you and doesn't. Figure out exactly where you will have your RP. What your space will look like. What the rules are. Along the way you might find people who will want to join in or develop it with you. Make sure the RP concept and rules are easy for people to find and grasp.

Then take a chance and see if it comes to life or not.

the possible difficulty i see is in how limiting it may become. true, there are a great many lesser known deities among all the ancient beliefs, but the average SL person will want to stick with what they already know. this means you'll have multiple people wanting to be Odin, Zeus, Thor, Hera etc. (or even my own personal choice, Loki. though my inworld profile may indicate otherwise...)
you might be better off creating your own mythology within SL, somewhat based around whichever your favorite(s) may be. this way people will be able to create their own deity within your preferred framework.

(and it appears i'm twice as full of bull as Pep, being a Taurus born in the year of the ox...)

It has often occurred to me how very unsatisfying it must have been for Leda . . . I mean, a SWAN? Seriously, can she have even noticed that it was happening?

was going to mention that instead, or along with, but it appeared, with my quick glancings, native Americans had been left out. didn't want to confuse anyone :p

(and i think Coyote is in my profile list. a good excuse for constant avatar changing...)

Take a look at the Dungeon & Dragons Pantheons (seems like they don't sex from what I've read). Also there's G'al, a SL native diety.

Ya know, Yeats was a great poet and all . . . but he didn't (if you'll forgive the expression) know dick about being a woman.

Neither do the players, much, from what I gather! As Amarinthim said on page 1, we make our gods in our own image :D
