From: Pie Psaltery Its always nice to see improvement when there's improvement to be seen. I'm glad the OP is getting to see some. But I hope those moles have high-powered energy drinks; there's an awful lot of ugly mainland out there. Aren't the moles just resident volunteers? So it's not actually LL that's doing anything pretty or who should be thanked, it's your fellow residents doing the nice things for SL that LL doesn't think are important enough to pay someone to do. Or am I wrong? From the original blog post, it makes it seem as tho workers of the LPWD would be 'contracted' but there was no response to a couple of ppl asking if the moles would be volunteers or paid. Anyone know? Ahhh... cynicism I have a friend that is one of the moles. They are part time positions and relatively low pay. I THINK I recall it being $10 per hour. But it is extra money in the bank.

Spruced down mainland sim
12-02-2008 00:32
About a year back, I made a road through my sim (using overhanging prims) and it was continued into the next sim by the neighbouring community - we coordinated on a cobblestone texture that we both liked. My sim is mostly countryside apart from where I have my shop, and at the sim intersection the Linden land had a lot of pine trees and shrubbery growing through the road. This weekend I noticed that the trees had gone. But they had left the road I guess we are spruces down rather spruced up

From: Anti Antonelli OK, back to the topic (I already posted this in the duplicate thread but, well, everybody else posted in this one). A coffee shop (not a business, just a functional Linden-owned build) went in next to my store in Brownlee a while back, on Linden owned land that was not protected but set to "maintenance". Nice build and a small relief to have something put in there - the empty field was nice but I was always a little worried that LL would some day remember that old parcel and put it up for auction and I'd end up with an ad farm or some other horrible thing next door. Re: suspicions of ulterior motives... Brownlee is pretty much smack in the middle of the old southern continent, about as landlocked as you can get. It's a roadside parcel in a nice non-crowded commercial area. They clearly did it just to spruce the place up a bit. Oooh fantastic, I will be popping over to take a look at that, thanks for sharing EDIT: Came over and took a look, I really liked the juice bar. Very well done I thought and a good potential hangout place for the area

I wanted to share this epic journey by boat that I achieved this weekend. I went from my home sim of Watchman 100% by water to Phlarzo sim. There is no other journey like it and all went very smoothly without being unseated once or needing a relog. My boat was the sleek and very feature filled SW-320 (in red) by Verkin Raven whose boat has paid for itself many times over with the fun I have had with it. There were many wonderful sights along the way, many beautiful builds. I won't pretend there were not some eyesores but where else can you undertake such a journey that spanned about 2.5 hrs of real time except mainland? Here is the journey...

Wow, fab journey! I often sail from my home sim of Thalipolli South down to the East edge of the big new Nautilus island and back. One of the main reasons I adore living on the mainland is the distance you can sail these days. Me and my Trudeau Twenty go all over. No mole activity here yet, be nice to see some sea life and plants on Mapple. Also some water is landlocked purely because LL forgot to put small protected 'rivers' at the edges where sims meet and so there's ban lines and 'no object entry' that bounce me to the sea bed. Some of this land is for sale or abandoned so I'll keep my fingers crossed that some moles visit

Sheesh I can't believe I said coffee shop when of course it's a juice bar. I guess it's the Seattle coffee junkie in me coming out...

Aww, you could have hooked around the corner and visited Tigger... you were within a couple of sims of us. There's a prim well there, but it's on low production right now (I suppose Nautilus is almost full so they can get by on the regular production at ANWR)... the seals seem to appreciate it.

Thanks Argent, I will try to include that in my next epic journey There are so many options for directions to take when sailing, that was just one possible route that was connected for along distance. I must admit to being really surprised that so many of the water bodies are connected and passable.

I must admit to being really surprised that so many of the water bodies are connected and passable. They didn't used to be. There used to be ban lines all around one of the critical sims for the link between the continents, with no indication they were there because you can't see them from another sim... only a tiny triangle of protected land in the corner of the sim was open... and it was to easy to miss it when you were sailing north. I actually created a JIRA asking for another water sim to fill in the gap, but they seem to have decided to take down their ban lines more recently, Hallelujah.

Amen to that, also it seems that the border crossings are much better than in the past too either that or I picked a good day. I didn't even get the flying off into nowhere and then snapping back again. It really was a pleasure.

From: Gabriele Graves I would say you have not seen very much of the mainland based upon your comments. There are some lovely parts of mainland. Most areas of land around the water sims are kept nice because a lot of people want to live on the beach in front of the sea. Go look at the lands surrounding the water areas near my sim Watchman to find land that is only as laggy as most islands, mostly adfarm free without anything I would call ugly. Or go see where I have land in Tamsi, the areas around there are lovely. Same goes for the area around Nautilus where I also have land in San Seguis. I am not just saying look at my land, I am saying look at the vast areas around these parts I am most familliar with before calling all mainland ugly. Sure there are some banlines (not as many as you would think and despite what people say I have personally seen banlines on islands too) and there is not as much uniformity between sims but within the same sim you usually find people are trying to keep things nice and consistent. There are sims and sims of waterfront that is simply a delight to drive your boats past. I know this because I boat a lot. Thanks, I will go and check out those places for sure. As for banlines, I agree, they're everywhere, certainly not exclusive to the mainland

From: Gabriele Graves If anyone comes across anything made by Moles or that has been revitalised by LL for the mainland which has not been announced, report it here and whereabouts you found it. thx Moles are beginning to gather at my build in Bay City, but I don't think they are associated with the LDPW. They look like they're up to something. Since this photo was taken, one of them has acquired a shovel. http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=327668Here's a photo of the build that they are standing next to, The Bay City Ball Machine. http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=327665I'll have to keep an eye on these guys to see what they might do.

When will the LDPW finish running the road through Noonkkot? Or let us take over? I'd be happy with no road there or a complete road there, but the incomplete road is silly.
Not to mention that it's *almost* complete, there's a gap of about 3 sims in an otherwise complete road...
Argos Hawks - if you want to come visit and set up a prim mole road crew on "smoko" next to the end of the road, I'd be happy to put you in the group.

Hey Opti, What kind of skills, expectations and average work week is like or required to be Mole? The thing is I didn't know if I have any references or I would have wanted as a Mole but I wasn't sure if I was good enough. I tend to focus more on textures. I have some building skills but they tend to be more on the cheerful side aka misalligned but I am very creative.

I will run your question by the road moles and/or Lindens to see if they have any idea if/when the road will be completed. Thanks for the heads up! ~Opti

Hello FD, My best advice would be to apply as per the directions on the LDPW wiki site. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Linden_Department_of_Public_Works#How_to_Apply ...Taken directly from the LDPW wiki site... ""Fully rounded content creators are certainly encouraged to apply, but we will be asking you to indicate your core skill, assuming that most people are not Leonardo DaVinci and specialize in certain areas."" ~Opti

Thanks Opti, I have to think hard about how to present it. I would love to see my textures in a park. I draw trees, flowers, etc. Part of reason why I haven't applied is in my first life I am disabled and I can only earn certain amount before it would cut off the services like my in home nursing and medical care which I need to live independently but I really miss working.
