I read this is another thread and wanted to explore it further. Thought it best to start a new thread:
"It is sad that Furries seem to be the ones least tolerated. They soo cute....anyway..."
I felt I needed a new outlook on SL and recently went a bit... well, foxy. I haven't been out and about much except the occasional dance with my new foxy friend. I haven't, as yet, met any intolerance either. So, questions...
Have you seen many instances of intolerance? If so, what form did they take? How do you view furries? A bit of fun or more suspiciously? If so, why? Why do you think there is this intolerance?
I ask because this is all new to me. Just great fun and I've found it makes me view SL in a completely fresh way. Quite odd really how that happens. Are there some undercurrents that perhaps I should be aware of?

Perhaps this is as a subset of homophobia given where furries started from. And Yiffing.
I don't mind furries tho I think in places which are specific adult and roleplay you should make the effort to blend in with what that venue/sim is doing. For some people, it ruins their play to see a giant wolf or something.

Ya bastid!!!! My friend and I do take great pleasure in visiting the homes of hooray-henries in the middle of the night, digging up their croquet lawns, shatting in their venison stores and leaving very nasty deposits in thei 1892 vintage port. Boom Boom!

Oh I agree. I wouldn't dream of going to Midian or a mediaeval rp sim for example. Absolutely. No, I just do the usual wander round the grid, shop, chat to people, sniff their ankles kind of stuff.

While shopping for boots I had a newb make a rude comment once.
Oh, and I was dancing with Jezabell and she asked me not to go furry on her.
That's about it in my experience. Just don't wear a fur suit where it is not appropriate. A little common sense and consideration and it's never a problem; just like anything else in life.

As I've not been a furry, I don't have the experience to say how Furries are treated...but I can say that in my 3+ years in SL, I've never seen a Furry abused. I've spoken with many, and I've seen many in group situations--never has anyone treated them any differently.

Never really had a problem , found a couple of people who think it is silly, but generally, most people respect a detailed avatar, and it's easier to be a good looking cartoon than real person Though I did decide to wear pants after a few hints from people that naked furrys are a little too much for some people in general. I have seen some intolerance from basically kids on the grid back 12 months ago and furies then seemed to be reclusive to just their sims, but now they are out and about everywhere again

I've seen some intolerance in the wild, but most of what is out there now jes seems to be the garden variety griefing types. It used to be a bit more prevalent.

I have only been "attacked" once where it seemed that my being furry was the cause of the attack. Most places where it was made clear to me that furries were unwelcome were RP sims that didn't include anthro furrs in their scenario, for various reasons. Then again, I also steer clear of places that I know are common griefer targets...

The most common thing I run into when wearing my "Neko look" (not full fur but plenty close for most people) is the desire of some people to "own" me. Most of the time if I get questions about why I look that way I tell them "Because I want to" and that has always been good enough.

Thanks for the replies. I have never encountered any anti-furriness either, which is why the comment I saw on another thread jarred me a little. Oh, and I've already made my first foxy top: http://www.flickr.com/photos/20573914@N02/2228808844/

lol! Great Kelly! Lack of clothing was a reason I stopped using my dear Ladyfox. Well other reasons too. I didn't mind going around all furry naked, but sometimes I wanted clothing, and those weren't so easy to find. Of course, since then, I've learned how to edit things better, but now, not so interested in running her.

The worst of it comes from people who are already in some sort of griefer group, and just using it as another excuse to hate and hurt someone. Among those who are not griefers, anti-furry intolerance more often than not a mistaken belief that all furries are homosexual or that they are engaging in some form of bestiality. So someone who would hate you for being gay or for being suspect of engaging in sexual practices that they themselves couldn't tolerate would also be more likely to be intolerant of furries.

From: Ceera Murakami Among those who are not griefers, anti-furry intolerance more often than not a mistaken belief that all furries are homosexual or that they are engaging in some form of bestiality. So let's see... 1. Furries are all gays, into bestiality, and are all about yiffing. 2. Child avatars are all pedophiles and perverts. ...any others? Seems to be a lot of stereotypes out there. Goreans? Vampires? Ruths? Mari

It's not furries, or child avatars, or gays, or goreans, or the BDSM crowd, or religion, or cross-dressing eskimo penquins that people are intolerant of.
People are intolerant of things due to missing genes in their DNA. ie, they're stupid.
To this day, those that discriminate can't seem to get it through their thick, pointy heads that THEY are the minority. MOST of the human race has evolved enough to figure out that everyone deserves their views and outlooks and lifestyles. Only the few regressives are left.
Eventually Darwin's Law will weed them out. Until then, yes, you will run into some within SL that attack whatever group their teeny tiny minds deciede doesn't fit their idea of utopia. Then they get booted off the parcel, banned from the grid, and don't realise that they are the ones doing something wrong. It's sad really. It's like watching a fish try to walk up on land and not realising it can't breath air.
But of all of it, anyone so attacked can take comfort in the fact that these idiots are the rare few. They stand out because they are such a difference from the cultural norm. Exactly how they view whatever group they are attacking (ironic isn't it?).
So, if you run into them, just look at them and nod and shake your head. Sitting down and filing ARs or just TPing out, or continuing on after the landowner ejects them. Life goes on and is too short to wast on de-evolution.
~Jessy
