I've been clearing out my wardrobe over the past week and I MOSTLY have my clothing figured out- although the Shoes folder's only half-way finished.
The part of this task that I'm dreading is the Hair folder. Many hairstyles come in "fat packs" or at least packs with a few variations on a color, so categorizing by color doesn't seem appropriate. I'm considering going by either length or style, but am not sure whether this is an either/or thing or whether both should be factored into the hierarchy. For example:
Hair\Style\Length\Specific Product
So- how do you organize your hair, and how is your scheme working out for you?
P.S. I know some people go by designer, but when I'm dressing I'm thinking "what color/mood do I want?" not "whose stuff do I want to wear today?"

How do you organize your hair?

I usually wear one on my head at a time.... I keep mine in folders by designer. i only wear from 3 designers, and i don't change color much, usually just shades of the same color. I've got about 50 hairstyles right now, i rarely see anything new in hair that I like so it's not hard to keep it organized.

I go by style then colors then simple facts to help me remember. For example,
Left side pony black arteleri left side pony black with blonde 6 lots of bangs
there are several of styles I like to wear with a specific outfit
updo black bling flower for silver strapless dress
See
My shoes, thats another story.

There's your answer - organize by color and mood. Designers mean nothing to me, other than I know who's stuff I like, so I shop at their stores. I don't have as much hair as you probably do, so it's not a concern for me, but it makes sense to me to organize it by what you are thinking when you get dressed. If your first concern is color, then start there, if the next concern is mood, make that your subfolder, etc. Or do what I do - lump it all into a folder called "hair and other crap", then close your eyes and randomly click on one. My life is an adventure.

I have one folder for copyable styles, and then another for no-copy styles. Most of what I buy is copyable, so I can use it on a wide range of avatar types, since I have a number of furry forms with very different head sizes and shapes. I tend to keep those hair styles that work best in my "Avatars" folders, each set up for a particular avatar, as a "complete look" folder. So for example my black anthro worf form has one long black hairstyle that I think suits her particularly well. That one is pre-loaded in the folder with the avatar. A black version with white streaks and an auburn version are nested in the next folder up, already sized to fit that particular avatar.

Most of my hair is variations on one color group, so organizing by color isn't much of an issue for me. I keep a separate folder for each designer, and keep my favorite/most worn designers' folders in one main folder. Lesser-worn stuff goes in another main folder. Within each designer's folder, I group styles into subfolders - ponytails, updos, short, etc. I tend to have a group of favorite styles that I go back to over and over, so usually when I get dressed I'm thinking more along the lines of, 'I want that cute short cut from so-and-so,' or something similar.

I own hair from several different designers, although Gurl 6 & Calico are probably my favorites, to go by my inventory. It really is a pain to do, but I have it organzed by color (brown, blonde, black, red, misc.) and then, under each color, by style (updos & ponytails, long hair, medium hair, short hair). I started off mainly blonde, but as I've gotten different skins, I've started using different shades and colors of hair to match those skins better. My shape doesn't really ever change, but my skins do, and hair has to change too. I have tons of hair in my inventory, way too much, and still buy a new one or 2 each week. I think I have more hair in my inventory than anything else.....lol. But, to me, it's an accessory to whatever I'm wearing or doing, or an indicator of my mood or the occasion. When I buy a new style, I immediately organize it into the proper folder. For example, Gurl 6 usually has at least 4 different shades in each pack, and they can range from red to brown in some packs. As soon as I purchase them, I tp home, try them on and make any needed adjustments, and then organize them into the folder. It saves me time in the long run when I need to get ready quickly.

In my body parts folder is my hair folder and in there are the individual folders for each style of hair. So I'll have several folders for one store, and several for another... pretty simple really but it's slow and I just browse around a lot longer when I want to change my hair.

I have a folder I've named "HAIR" and then subfolders in there for Long, Updo's, Pony/Pigtails, and Accessories. I also have a folder I keep in there named "Need to sort"...unfortunately, that folder is usually the most full. Most my colors are the in the same range, so I don't separate colors...but I do add the color into the item name at the beginning, so in my inventory it would read something like: " Browns) CALLA - Hibiscus" It words well for me since I sort my inventory alphabetically, keeps all the colors grouped together in each sub folder.

I have tons of hair by different designers. Here's my folder structure:
Hair -- Long -- -- !Fantasy colors -- -- Fatpack folders -- -- Miscellaneous individual hairs
-- Short -- -- !Fantasy colors -- -- Fatpack folders -- -- Miscellaneous individual hairs
-- Updoos -- -- !Fantasy colors -- -- Fatpack folders -- -- Miscellaneous individual hairs
-- Hair Deco (hair accessories)
-- My 3 or so favorite hairs
I generally do not keep fatpacks open, just extract the 2 or 3 most favorite colors.
All my hair is copy/mod. Since I learned to recolor/retexture it, I've become lazy and retexture/recolor instead of unpacking fatpacks! Just keep a white version out and it's easy to make it whatever you want ...

By general style.
Demos Long and curly Ponytails Smoother (straighter styles) Updos
From there it is by style name. I usually buy the Gurl6 Seduction pack, with a few exceptions. I keep a picture with each style just in case, although I generally know the style by name.

it all goes by designer/style (ie whtever folder it came in) in a folder called 'hair' I'm very picky about my hair, so have only a few different styles...
I have started doing one thing that some stores already do, and that's include a snapshot of hair/clothes/ whatever in the folder with the item... so I can just pull up the snap shot and see if it's REALLY what I want (not so much a big deal with hair but wonderful w/ clothes)

OMG organize~!!!? LOL riiight....I have all my hair in a folder marked A.hairstyles...I name all my most used folders with A.(item name) so they stay at the top of my inventory.....once I open the folder...it's chaos LOL But at least I've narrowed my folders down to smaller clusters of specific chaos. Some day I may try to organize with more detail.....but thus far I go by memory with the hairstyles. It's the clothes & shoes that drive my bonkers cause I can never remember what stuff is called.

I have NOTHING in my official folders, preferring to have my most recent folders sort to top always! Been lucky so far, no real losses ... but I think I will do it. Thanks Lexxi ...

Or not, different experiences with SL eating stuff. Hm, learn something new every day... I keep hair in the body parts too. Hair, Skin, Shapes, and girly bits. Who'da thunk it...

Hmm, I like the 'fantasy colors' idea. Typically I only wear red or black, so maybe it wouldn't be too big a deal for me to pull out the reds and blacks I like, then drop all other colors into a catch-all folder. And I think I'll do a similar scheme: Hair - Long - Short - Pigtails - Ponytails - Updos - Baldies (for different eyebrow settings) - Ugly (for deletion or showing to friends when I'm bored) And under each one of those: - Black - Red - Other Colors

For each of my femme alts, I keep the main stock of hair in the folder titled "hair" under Body Parts.
Then, in subfolders under Clothing she'll have a seperate subfolder for each outfit, which will include shoes and hair (most of my hairstyles are copyable). That way I don't hafta remember which hair I thought went best with any outfit, and it makes chainging into the entire ensemble as quick as dropping a folder smack on her lil' pixel head.
