Griefer defense
12-31-2009 07:47
This topic is close to what I am looking for, not exact. Any guidance is appreciated.
Lately, i have been "shot" and I guess, orbited or something. (I was rendered helpless and pushed up to extreme altitude.
This happened in a protected sim that was for sale: Isle of Dreams, maybe, something like that. One person was standing around, and as I approached to ask if he was the owner, he raised a long pistol or a short rifle and a big red ball formed and he started shooting. I tp'd home and returned to ask him to just talk with me. He repeated the shooting thing. I AR'd him (first time ever for me). I was so humiliated and angered!!
My question: Is there something I can use to defend myself legally? Or, better, is there something I can use to force that person away from me regardless of legalities? I know nothing about guns. I see some on Xstreet for a thousand LIndens... does it take that much to knock an attacker away from me?
I'm aware this is likely a topic many would not address. Any advice? (If not here, then an IM would be appreciated.)

It's easy to forget -- and I think that there are some people who will never "get" -- how upsetting this kind of attack can be. There really isn't a "legal" way to respond to this kind of griefing offensively. Unless it's on your own land (in which case you can simply ban), you are liable yourself to being ARed if you use a push weapon or whatever against him without HIS permission. That wouldn't stop a lot of people from doing just that, of course, and a griefer isn't likely to AR you, but I'm not sure I think this is the best solution in any case. One thing you can do, however, is get a good Mystitool: these have all sorts of defensive AND offensive features. And remember that the easiest and most effective defence is simply to sit down: except in rare cases, this will render you invulnerable to push weapons and orbitting. The Ivory Tower of Prims also has a free anti-griefer attachment available, if I remember correctly. You ARed the person, which is good. If anyone else was a witness, you should ask them to send an AR in as well. I would also send a detailed notecard to the sim owner about the incident, in the hope that the griefer will be banned from that parcel.

Thank you so much. I do have the free version of Mysti Tool, but I was told I need the full version. I do have my own place, so I will study-up on this part of SL. I am currently experimenting with the Emerald viewer, and it seems to have some features that my be useful also.
