I suspect LL's position is that everything here is just a service and we have no long term rights to anything, other than IP.
How many hundreds of US$ are missing from my inventory? If the whole lot was swallowed up overnight, from all my avatars, I doubt it would be much more than *one* hundred US dollars. My main inventory is approaching 20K, much of it bought & paid for stuff. I wouldn't be happy to lose it, but I think the OP's estimate is hysterically high.
I'm aware of about 5 items that have gone missing, all of which were brought back by inventory rebuilds. If it's gone and I don't know, then I probably didn't need it.

From: Kelli May I suspect LL's position is that everything here is just a service and we have no long term rights to anything, other than IP. Which is why people are looking longingly towards other grids.

From: someone *snip* (b) the perpetual and irrevocable right to delete any or all of your Content from Linden Lab's servers and from the Service, whether intentionally or unintentionally, and for any reason or no reason, without any liability of any kind to you or any other party; *snip*
*snip* 3.3 Linden Lab retains ownership of the account and related data, regardless of intellectual property rights you may have in content you create or otherwise own.
You agree that even though you may retain certain copyright or other intellectual property rights with respect to Content you create while using the Service, you do not own the account you use to access the Service, nor do you own any data Linden Lab stores on Linden Lab servers (including without limitation any data representing or embodying any or all of your Content). Your intellectual property rights do not confer any rights of access to the Service or any rights to data stored by or on behalf of Linden Lab. *snip*
From the TOS It looks like, that even though we think we own the stuff we buy... we don't, and that they can delete it anytime they want, with or without reason... I never think I am buying something and owning the item, after all it is a virtual item... I look at it as I am buying the right to use that item, within the world of Second Life, and that the use of that item could expire at any given time.

That doesn't make their apparently cavalier attitude towards their cash cow any less puzzling. This is a quality of service issue.

From: Jannae Karas It could be that I am getting careless, but lately I seem to be having some folders and objects migrate from one place to another in inventory. I find things tucked in the odd folder when I can't find it and do a search by key word. I've had this happen to me a lot after I've moved stuff around. In a few cases, it was due to a sim rollback; however in most of my cases, it was from moving things into folders and, just as I'm about to drop the item into a folder, its parent will open up and push my target folder out of the way just as I drop the item. Yeah, the tools LL provides us to manage our inventories are far from perfect and definitely leave a lot to be desired. But, on topic: The only things I can ever recall having actually lost from my inventory were a few items of clothing - all dollarbies. A few items "could not be found in the database", and the others, based on system clothing, reverted to "default" appearance and texture.
