From speaking with many people in Second Life I find that we all have at some point looked for items in our inventory, Only to find that they no longer exist, some small, some more expencive.
The thing is, that what's in your inventory belongs to you You either created them or your paids your hard earned money to own them. Nothing worse than going to your inventory and finding that your treasured items no longer exist, is there someone in your account or is it an error with the databases. It is either one or the other and i feel this issue should be looked into more seriously.
The first time i recall missing something from my inventory was around 2006 I remember rezzing some box i had received, and a few seconds later my av took a whole new shape which took ages to reconstruct! lol But the very next day my lovely 8k law givvers were gone and ever since i've been finding empty folders every few weeks, not much i can do really. God it took me months to save up for those guns.
How many 100's of USD are you missing?

How many 100's of USD are you missing? no idea... since it took me at least two days to trim out 10000 items, i doubt i'll notice or have time to check through the 45000 others...

Well that is understandable, But even if you have too many items to notice any missing, Still belongs to you and don't you have a right to know what happened? What if you're personal info goes missing from a web site that is supose to be secure enough to protect your content, do you just say oh well what can i do. I think most people would think twice about using it again. Just because it is a game doesn't make it any less important. What's the point in constructing databases if they can't save info. We use databases to manage content and use security to protect it.

I can honestly say, None. I have never lost a single inventory item in the 2+ years i have been in SL. I have over 34K items and can access any of them almost instantly, though items that have not been recently accessed experience a rezz delay whilst they are retrieved from what is probably 2nd tier storage.

Good point..... But I have a really hard time committing myself to anything stored on a server or hard drive...anywhere. The bottom line is....as great as technology is.....the risk of losing information will always be there. If I don't want to lose valuable information....I write it down.....I back up my photo albums and print my most treasured photos. But there's still very little security unless you throw everything in a fireproof safe. We can't do that in SL.....we take a risk with our $$$ and it always strikes me as ..... I don't know....naive....paculiar....not sure what the right word is......but that anyone would allow themselves to get so attached to pixel items. I am NOT in any way belittling the value of all the amazing creations in SL but I just always, in the back of my mind....understand that at any moment it could all disappear. So yeah...I've dumped a LOT of cashola into this and so far 've been very lucky. Hell I've probably deleted more $$ than I've lost due to inventory glitches. But I assumed that risk when I signed on. I don't see it as any more of a loss then the $42 steak I had at Ruth's Chris......that once consumed.....is no more. I guess we just need to really enjoy what we've got....while we've got it. That's as true in SL as IRL......nothing is ever gonna be permanant and money is a tool more often then not, is used to trade for very temporary luxuries. Chances are we'll see the security of these types of data storages become more and more reliable.....but why waste time bemoaning the losses..... Perhaps LL should create some sort of Virtual Liability Insurance policy that residents can purchase for a few 1000 L's a month in the event that they 'might' lose inventory. But, I kinda doubt that's gonna happen.

Even though I have never lost an item, I am a firm believer that we should have the ability to create offline inventory backups as part of the LL service.

Never lost an item from inventory (fingers crossed), but that ghost prim nonsense a while back was costly for me. Also (this happened only once) I rezzed my favorite no copy spa, and it immediately disappeared, never to be seen again. No ghost prims or trace of any kind. And yes, I know it was gone, prim level did not change on the parcel.

Only things I know I've lost was a texture and a dance chimera. The texture cost me three weeks worth of work replacing items that had it and the dance chimera turned up three months later. After I had replaced it and all it's dances.
I dunno if I'd notice much of my stuff being missing. I've a very badly organized inventory and a lot of stuff, so.... *shrugs*

Other than a few trivial scripts that went "could not be found in the database" (I have local backups of important scripts), I'm aware of one thing that went poof and that was when I was taking it back into my inventory. Unfortunately it was a homemade MLP device with dozens of purchased animation sets along with some of my own stuff, and it represented many hours of work positioning and setting up a fairly complex menu system (not to mention the time spent acquiring suitable animations).
So now I keep offline backups of .positions and .menuitems notecards too.

I truly don't believe I've lost any items either. There have been times that I thought I lost some things but I eventually find them......mostly right where they should have been and I simply searched for them thinking they were named something different. A few times I've found then in the lost and found or trash. I'm sure the stories about huge loses of inventory are true..........but I'm not sure it's a widespread problem. As Milla said, the "items" that we 'possess" and call our own are nothing but bits and dabs of data stored on a server. Data loss happens (more than we want for sure) and once that happens it's gone............ never be seen had again. It's the risks you take when you purchase something that in reality nothing but ones and zeros. One hiccup in the power..........poof, it's gone.
And for the offline storage......you can do that now. Second Inventory. But you can only copy things you have full permissions on. Those things you bought that are no copy, or no mod, or no transfer are at the mercy of Linden Lab's servers.

It could be that I am getting careless, but lately I seem to be having some folders and objects migrate from one place to another in inventory. I find things tucked in the odd folder when I can't find it and do a search by key word.

From: Peggy Paperdoll And for the offline storage......you can do that now. Second Inventory. Yes I know, I did qualify it in my post with the word "free". Second Inventory is far from free.

My inventory seems to always be +- about 3000 items whenver I log on ..never the same number
I found out that if I fingerbang the search while Inventory is initially loading I get higher numbers than if I leave it alone.
not sure about the technical end of this but I usually just punch in a good portion of the numbers or words that I know do not exist in my items .. this seems to help loading more items and get me close to the amount of items that I actually have.
Sometimes just relogging helps too
oh and.. and no I never actually lost anything either.. I think its just a communications issue with the data servers and eventually all of your stuff will load.

some things randomly vanish..then turn up again...one box i did lose...it had the entire contents of our roman villa in it...that was an ouch moment (rezzed the box to retrieve something, took it back and it never made it back to my inventory..moments later an inworld message about *asset server problems*). 2 years worth of stuff..wedding gifts...furniture..well everything we owned really (yeah duh me for storing it all in one box) that was costly..not sure how much though...i dont think i want to add it up

Most the things I've had that have gone missing have been accidentally moved to other folders because of the jumpiness of the cursor in inventory sometimes. I can only remember one instance of an item disappearing completely.

I have once lost a TV due to return from my landlord.
Lucky the creator was kind enough to send me a new one.

oh and.. and no I never actually lost anything either.. I think its just a communications issue with the data servers and eventually all of your stuff will load. This is because your client side inventory cache is not completely downloaded. When you clear your cache, the identifiers for all your inventory items start to download once you access your inventory and they are stored on your computer. This allows for quick access to all your inventory on subsequent logins. If you access your inventory whilst it is incomplete, especially using the search filter, you will see the amount of items increase as they load. Sometimes corruption of the cache will cause re-downloading of the inventory identifiers to occur. For a large inventory downloading the inventory cache can take a long time, especially is your connection is slow or SL is very laggy.

If they're going to let you violate people's copyright anyway ("Full Permissions" does not mean "Public Domain", and people who copy content they don't have licenses for to other grids are violating copyright whether they're "Full Permissions" or not), they might as well go all-out and let you back up everything. Yes, I'm half kidding, but only half.

I lost over 2000 items from my inventory in one shot,at the time i had two inventory windows open, when i closed one of them the 2000 items vanished. I submitted a ticket,LL tried a few things and i did their suggestions but in the end they told me the items were lost A lot of expensive items were lost and over 2 years of accumulated items. I contacted some vendors and they replaced some items for me I would hazard a guess of about $500 to $1000US lost

I clear cache only after I see problems... And usually after 2 days of seeing the same problems. I think I cleared cache last month after I started seeing skin and clothing textures showing up in walls and trees. (O.o)
I basically never see my inventory shift in quantity on its own. It's currently nearing 17k and is expanding much more slowly when compared to my old freebie binge days. (^_^)
Once in a while, I'll have gestures de-activate after a bad crash, but, I have a folder specifically for activated gestures, so, I just 'Add to outfit' on that folder and all is well again. (^_^)

Considering the size of my inventory, surprisingly little has been lost - and LL have recovered some lost inventory that I didn't realise had been lost!
I sometimes wish that, since I am purchasing server hosting from LL, I could get a nice SLA to apply, as I would expect from a service provider - but LL are in a uniquely favourable position which, no doubt, they want to maintain as long as possible.

I've got quite a few assets... mostly animations, parts of avatars, and clothes... that have either stopped loading or have had their permissions go completely closed, which has much the same effect. In one case I went back to the creator and when she went to give me a copy her copy had gone as well. I've been relatively lucky, I haven't seen the kind of great culling that some other people have suffered. From: Deira Llanfair I sometimes wish that, since I am purchasing server hosting from LL, I could get a nice SLA to apply, as I would expect from a service provider - but LL are in a uniquely favourable position which, no doubt, they want to maintain as long as possible. Of course a large reason for their effective monopoly is the "asset barrier to entry" that other grids have to overcome. Which makes their occasionally cavalier attitude towards their cash cow somewhat puzzling.
