I rent from one of those companies that has a whole bunch of sims. The rent is just about exactly what I was paying to LL. Have been there since February or so and am still happy. It's totally residential so no heavy traffic or griefers. The landlord has been really responsive to questions, sim issues and neighbor issues.
It is terraform-enabled (yay!), so it's kind of like a cross between estate and mainland, in that each parcel is different (no sim-wide fancy landscaping), but it is managed by the landlord to ensure everyone gets along. FD, feel free to IM me in world if it sounds like it would suit you; I was reluctant to "rent" too but this has been a really positive experience. |

Speaking from experience (I know folks remember my neighbor story), jes wait them out. Show a united front an give 'em the idea that no, ya'll are not going anywhere. Great advice, Mari! I was actually thinking of coming to visit Bay City again soon...I remember that "wonderful" person who put up the highrise in back of your parcel. Was hoping it had now vanished. _____________________

I am primarily texture artist and unless I am experimenting with building or
attempting scripts I don't use a whole lot of prims but I have grown accustom to having at least 3000 to 3500 prims which I intention never use more then 2000 at any given time and limit my script use to no more then 20 items. I just wish there more people on mainland who also were more gentle with sim resources but not every one wants or cares too. For last few years I have lot of tier donations from friends which has cut cost considerably so unless I had to go up to 1/4 sim cost again it just doesn't seem reasonable to rent 1/4 sim when might get stuck with having to pay it at 1/2 sim cost for rent where basically there very little protection if rental situation goes badly. Any way hopefully things will turn out, I just got really grumpy about the situation last night and got bit stressed out. Thanks for all your kind words. A lot of us who do main land I guess are faced with the problems with neighbors, I didn't know resource hogs were reportable offense. My friend who orginal had most of sim was being impacted by the neighboring sim when there was a club next door with 30 plus guest and from the impression I got from her was that LL couldn't do anything when a neighboring sim was draining fps but they were able to do something about small camper site that had 20 to 40 camp chairs that was block access from those who couldn't visit even though she own majority of sim last year. I just wish the Lindens managed shared sim resources better then do and more enforcement on those who drain all the resources for themselves and create hostile living situations because maybe I was lucky but lot of people deal with this at one point or another on mainland. _____________________

reason i left the mainland a very very very long time ago
can live with bad builds but the resource abuse, ugh, on an estate you can atleast access the debug functions to hunt laggers if you recieve the access |

I must be one of the lucky mainland owners.
I have been in the same spot for over 2 years and I have seen some bad stuff move in, then move out at the moment I have wonderful neighbours only one build is a bit gaudy, but if I turn my draw to 64 which I do most of the time, I do not see it _____________________

I think but I am not certain but it has to do with entire sims worth of mega prims
over the grass so there is black everywhere. When I was only one there with 20 mega prims or so it was ok. When they can added more mega prims I personally can feel it but I am not sure. How many mega prims can a sim have before it effects the sim resources? Any one know? Anyway I just muted and banned the ones on edge of my property in hopes this will prevent any future issues or drama. _____________________

FD all I can say is I have been there and probably will be again.
This kind of tactic to force sales is as old as the grid itself. My Best advice build yourself and enclosed space to work in. Occlusion culling is your friend. If you don't have windows your lag will drop dramatically in MOST cases. Long ago I build a park (back in the very first days that custom animations were in SL). I populated the park with lovely trees, Japanese lanterns, a mah jong table, some of the early couples dance balls, tai chi animations, cuddle cushions and benches. It was just a lovely oasis to spend a peaceful afternoon or evening either alone or with someone special. My family built homes on two sides of it. Then one day a mega mall went up next door. Suddenly no one oculd move for the lag and the owner was ARing me for causing the lag. Then she enclosed her mall in a 100 m tall black cube that went right up to the property edges and went linden shopping to have 90% of my trees removed (which were original linden placed trees btw). Things escalated and it got downright nasty. We ignored it all for the better part of a year. Then some financial trouble hit and I had a choice. Sell my business in another sim (which was doing well) or sell our park and homeland. We sold at a HUGE loss. being honest I have never forgiven myself for selling. Both becuase it looked like we caved to her pressure and because we LOVED that space. Selling out at that exact point killed the magic of SL for me for a very long time.I got it back but it took years. 1 month later the woman sold off all her land in that sim. If I had a vote I would tell you to just wait it out. Nothing lasts forever in SL eventually they will tire of their games and piss off. Mean time maybe put a wall in front of thiers with some nice trees so you dont have to look at thier crap. |

It might well be an excess of megas (though there were supposed to be changes with Havok 4 I don't know how big). Also be very sure you disable push on your land. Otherwise they will have great fun taking pot shots at you and sending you to who knows where. Then they will claim it was accidental and stray bullet and why didn't you have push disabled. Been through that one also. ![]() |

Last thing I would do ids leave or sell to them, I would also wish them well, because the more they expand the more space they will need, they won't be able to get it and before you know they will sell out an move to their own openspace sim.
Or set your land for sale for $9m or something stupidly expensive to see how keen they are, they may have wads of cash to burn, clear it at ground level and move all your stuff to 3000m and just check for them leaving occasionally. Try not to fear change, unfortunately SL is full of it and think of all the good neighbours you may find elsewhere too. _____________________

Everything is locked up tight permission wise so hopefully nuclear 3 war
is going to be starting in my corner of SL....knock on wood. Occlusion culling? I have heard of technique of building box to increase fps but I didn't or wasn't sure if it really worked. I have to ponder and experiment with that for areas I do my photo work, etc. I am bit sad but I have been pretty blessed with good group of friends who have been extremely kind to me. I hate changes especially when it seems like its going for the worse. I had looked forward to another year of just creating and not having to deal with any major drama and things that go with it, just the usual day to day stuff of creating in SL,etc but I have strong hunch things are going to be changing which is usually pretty constant for most of SL but I sort like my SL to be bit more predictable, etc and it usual is, I have had same friends for close to two years, few new ones, some have moved on but I have core group of friends I have known for long time who we take care of each other in our own ways and are have been together in one area for long time. It was really nice to have group of friends all sharing similar regional areas, being nice neighbors, etc. I don't know what I am going to do if my other friend wants to get full sim versus the 48000 in one spot we have been near. She said I could have it if I could afford the tier but I don't think I can cover that. _____________________

FWIW, it sure sounds to me as if your lag problem is client-side, FD. You may want to View / Statistics Bar (or something like that) and see if the sim itself is showing any big dips in time dilation or FPS... if not, you'd need to make it clear to LL that whatever's causing the lag is hitting the viewer side... which is a little trickier for them to diagnose or bring themselves to do anything about.
I'm thinking that megaprims are much more likely to cause viewer- rather than sim-lag, post Havoc 4.* And animated textures, particles, etc., are all exclusively viewer-side effects (well, unless they *change* the prim properties for these effects on a scripted timer, too). So, if it's viewer-side, your best bet is to stay aloft when working on things needing higher graphics settings, and then dumb-down the graphics preferences when you're on the ground. Pain in the ass, I know: I sometimes run on a (very) lower-end machine, too. +++ I think Tegg's idea is worth serious consideration: set your parcel for sale at a price that would make you *happy* to move; maybe they'll buy and then--by definition--you'll be happy about that change. ________ * This isn't a universal truth or anything. Collision calculations still have to be performed, and a megaprim has a mega-sized bounding box... and if it's not oriented with the world axes, an even bigger bounding box... and god only knows, if it spans sim boundaries and avatars go clomping around near it, what all has to be calculated and communicated between the sims. _____________________

Things always change. last time i was in bay city it was a lot ofempty lots aperntlyoverpriced even for double prims has things changed much? There are still a few of them, including some that was well beyond the realm of sanity. There are also some parts of town that are gorgeous. Falconmoon an Argos are shaping up into a nice "downtown." Rollers around the theater is looking pretty good. Handa, with the Terra store, the Primout Dealership, and all those starax sculptures is seriously high class. It's also good, IMO, that there is now a "Bay City Alliance" working to improve the place as much as it can. ![]() Mari _____________________

I thought about if I could get this other land which friend said I could have as gift but all I would need is tier and I can't pay for it all by myself.
But if I could find people who would want be a part of community of Adults without the unwanted childish drama games, got the concept of what is to be a part of well run, respectful cooperative neighborhood only payment would be the condition how they pay for it is by donating tier to group for where in exchange for the have land. I would do it if I could avoid the obvious problems that that might lead Just for nice community focused for co-operative group of Residents, Artist, prim crafts-people who want to create, can respect others spaces and each other. Is there people who done this for exchange for not having to pay for additional land charges? Any advise? Would be demand for that type of Residential community? Possible problems I could see is not having enough coverage of tier. How to deal or prevent in group fighting and other melodramas that happen whenever you get group of people together. How to screen and pick residents? How to enforce neighborhood violations in respectful way? Finding people who would want to be a part of community when they can get cheap 512 or whatever sized lot any where on mainland do whatever they want. _____________________

FD! Listen carefully.
I had a nice lil' 1024 residential plot. Ended up with an Italian Sex club for neighbors on one side, a big ugly gorean mall in front of me blocking the view, and some other ugliness that appears. Funny thing is.... I out lasted them!!!! They MOVED!! LOL!! The only thing in my view right now is a house and a bunch of 512-1024 land plots!!! Just wait it out. _____________________
