As far as the demand -- there's plenty of it.
I didn't mean "demand for gift cards", I meant "demand for combinable gift cards".

Why? Sometimes the gift cards are given out as group gifts or in a lucky chair or midnight mania, but most of the time the cards are bought by someone so the merchant gets the money. In many case, especially a new store I am not familiar with, not being able to cover all or almost all of the price with the gift card simply encourages me not to use them and not to shop at that store.

Why? As a promo, the idea is to bring people to your store and get them to spend money -- that is unless you want to cover tier out of pocket.

The percentage of people using giftcards as promos outweighs the folks that just sell them outright. And people sticking them in MM boards has gained a lot of popularity in the last 2 months, greatly.

I give away a LOT of giftcards for my retail store. I would venture to say -- Giftcard usage outweighs cash purchases by two fold -- that's my choice. If a system were to allow you to use two cards at once -- the scammers find out, word gets out, merchants make no money, out of business. I have them in lucky chairs, MM boards, random givers, in a roulette wheel, and object camper. RL rules apply here 'one coupon per purchase'

*CC, I have 35 Giftcards totaling 4000L -- can I get just one card?*

*Hello, I have 2000L in giftcards that I won -- can I just get the cash?*

Just a couple of the messages I get..........

You've been to my store Littleme - you know how I roll ;)

On that note -- you are ABSOLUTELY correct. That is a headache waiting to happen -- although I am working on a rechargeable set up where folks can recharge their cards at a discounted rate.

We have a Store Credit system where you can add lindens to a person's account from the website or use an automated function in the card that's pretty cool.

Apparently, many of the gift card vendor systems are also getting hacked, so many stores have stopped using them. I do not know if this vulnerability exists in all of the different gift card vendors or not.

Littleme -- that was one system. And no, the vulnerability does not and has not affected mine because of our process. And because of that -- some of those other folks migrated over to mine. A couple of the other systems were not affected as well.

Some folks got real hurt on that exploit (merchants) I sent some of mine out for free because some friends were affected adversely.

I had not realized they were given away that much. If a merchant gives away lots of cards, then it definitely makes sense to not allow multiple cards for one purchase. Though if they are giving them away to get people to try their stuff, it makes more sense to me to give a card that covers all or most of the average price of an item in the store -- and yes, I know that yours do, but most merchants do not.

But they are not called 'coupons'. They are called Gift Cards. If I have multiple "gift cards" to Best Buy, I can use them all on the same purchase if I want to.

just FYI, (to add to your derailment {...}
I deny any and all responsibility for this thread going off the rails :)

[...] and since I was the one who asked you about gift cards, hahaha) I've won a couple gift cards from most notably clothing stores (Chez Gabrielle comes to mind, they are often prizes for group contests or things she holds). Those cards let you 'Wear' them. They appear on your hand when you're ready to buy at her store. It has to be worn while making your purchase. In the pie menu, alongside 'Buy' there is a 'Use Card' option. Choose that and somehow it calculates the cost of the item you've chosen. It always leaves the balance available to spend later, I've never lost anything. And, if your item costs more than the amount you have available on the card, it tells you that, and then you click 'Buy' to pay for the rest with your own Lindens. I've often spent less, and gone back later and spent the balance. NO idea though how that scripting or calculating works.

When I talked with you the other day about cards, I already knew your items in your store are trans; and I did buy a few to give to my little noob friend who has her first apartment. I just wanted to give her the chance to learn to shop (and the pleasure too, of course, it's fun to choose your own stuff). What I ended up doing was just giving her Lindens, and a LM to your store.
Thank you for the update. At least you know that I do take notice of what people say :)

Well, I think of gift card freebies as "discount cards" myself. I don't expect them to be combinable. I really think they should be a separate product than regular gift cards (bought as a gift).

For regular gift cards you probably want to have a scheme where you rez both cards, touch one, and zelect "transfer money to (or from) another card". Then touch the other and have it complete the transaction like it was a sale.

I totally agree - I do not necessarily think that freebie cards should be combinable, but if the goal of the freebie card is to get me to try your stuff then the freebie cards should, IMO, cover more that 5% of the average price. By the same token, I realize that I do have an odd view on these matters -- if the merchant is trying to entice me to try their stuff, they should be giving me a really hefty discount rather than the generic 10-20% off that they do with sales all the time anyway.

I am having such a hard time finding gift cards inworld or even in XSt. Anyone know of high quality creators/vendors that offer gift cards for their stores? I am especially looking for clothing, esp mens.
Ya ya, no advertising here - if you dont want to reply with some stores, IM me inworld or PM me here!
Thanks!

And back to the OP:

Blaze

I kept reading to see if anyone would mention Blaze. It has wonderful men's clothing (and now women's as well) and offers a gift card system that, to my knowledge just deducts the price of the item but if there is any left over, the card can still be used until the entire gift balance is gone.

snip.

I bought the system around January this year and found it unsuitable for implementation in my shop. I was promised an update after spending a fair amount of time with the scripter but of course it never arrived.

I understand usability has improved and I would like to hope some of the technical aspects have improved but of course through a lack basic customer service I am still waiting to find out.

Since I'm now writing this off as wasted money, does anybody know if there are any other gift card systems apart from hippo out there?
