I am having such a hard time finding gift cards inworld or even in XSt. Anyone know of high quality creators/vendors that offer gift cards for their stores? I am especially looking for clothing, esp mens. Ya ya, no advertising here - if you dont want to reply with some stores, IM me inworld or PM me here! Thanks!

It just so happens that I bought my first gift card this weekend.
We were to attend a rezday party and had no idea what to give the man of honor. A quick peek into his profile revealed he liked to shop at Lapointe & Bastchild, a store that carries a good amount of menswear and provides gift cards.

Shiny Things. They have a wall of men's shoes.
You might try Made Men or KMadd too but I have no idea if they have gift cards.

Part of the problem is going to be finding stores that sell guys stuff. I would suggest going on the "Make Him Over" hunt, or at least checking the stores listed on the MHO blog at http://makehimover.blogspot.com/. All the stores in the hunt have stuff for guys, and I'm sure that at least some of them must have gift cards. Pixeldolls isn't in the MHO hunt but I think they have gift cards, and a line of "Pixelchaps" clothes for guys. You might also check if Bare Rose and Silent Sparrow have cards.

I don't want to derail this thread but I do have a related question if I may ask it and, hopefully, receive just one or two replies.
A couple of days ago, I was asked if I do giftcards - someone wanted to buy one to give to someone else. I don't do them but I would like to know how a giftcard system actually works in practise. Of course, I understand how to sell one - it's just an object - but how does the giftee spend it in the store, and how does it work if the person doesn't spend it all in one go, or if they want something that costs more than the card has on it?

Phil,
Have used two different kinds that I have received. the one is where I wear the card and then touch a special button on the vendor. And if you had more left over after that that you could not spend well it was lost.
Then the more usual ones I have used is where you get a texture or a prim of the gift card with instructions on how to use it which is usually make a folder put the prim or texture in it with a notecard of what you wanted. Send it to the owner of the store. Again if left over you lose it. But I did have one vendor that let me use the the remainder and a few lindens (it was real close to the price) and they sent the product.

I have never had a gift card that didn't let me add L$ when I bought something to make up the difference.

There was an exploit on laggy sims where one could wear the gift card, make the purchase and then detach the card before it had time to up date. This caused a lot of people to pull their gift card systems. I am pretty sure A (another Silly Store ... or something like that) still has thier cards system outand they do men's clothes. The ones I have used as a customer were prim cards you would wear to use. I know with Chai, when I attached the card it told me how much was left. If I bought something it simply subtracted the amount from the card and sent the item. I could then use the balance again on another item. When I tried to buy something that was more then the card's balance, it would adjust the cash price of that item for me so that I only paid the remainder. Also, I do not remember where, but I know at one place I had multiple L$50 cards and could use more than one card on an item.

That exploit was centric to one system and it happened 10 months ago - it was to be fixed with a new release in July. Anyone that would make a system that lets you use more than one giftcard at a time is going out of business quick -- and their merchant customers as well. CC

Only if the merchants give away cards for free. If I've spent L$250 on cards what difference does it make whether I spend it as one L$250 card or five L$50 cards?

From: Phil Deakins I know - but I got off the track before the train ran over me just FYI, (to add to your derailment and since I was the one who asked you about gift cards, hahaha) I've won a couple gift cards from most notably clothing stores (Chez Gabrielle comes to mind, they are often prizes for group contests or things she holds). Those cards let you 'Wear' them. They appear on your hand when you're ready to buy at her store. It has to be worn while making your purchase. In the pie menu, alongside 'Buy' there is a 'Use Card' option. Choose that and somehow it calculates the cost of the item you've chosen. It always leaves the balance available to spend later, I've never lost anything. And, if your item costs more than the amount you have available on the card, it tells you that, and then you click 'Buy' to pay for the rest with your own Lindens. I've often spent less, and gone back later and spent the balance. NO idea though how that scripting or calculating works. When I talked with you the other day about cards, I already knew your items in your store are trans; and I did buy a few to give to my little noob friend who has her first apartment. I just wanted to give her the chance to learn to shop (and the pleasure too, of course, it's fun to choose your own stuff). What I ended up doing was just giving her Lindens, and a LM to your store.

Well for one -- using two cards at once creates a security issue and tells me that there is no validation between card and vendor and if there is -- its nominal at best.

If you use one card after another, wear one card, debit the L$50, toss it... wear the next card, debit the L$50, get the product... there is no security issue. It's two separate transactions, no different from paying L$50 from the card and L$50 from your account. It's also possible to give each card a unique nonce if you want to transactionalize the whole thing to keep the customer from losing the L$50 if something bad happens in the middle of the transaction. The question isn't whether it can be made secure, the question is whether there's a business case for the operation. I'll agree with "there's not enough demand for this to make it worthwhile implementing right", but not "it can't be done securely".

From: Rhonda Huntress There was an exploit on laggy sims where one could wear the gift card, make the purchase and then detach the card before it had time to up date. This caused a lot of people to pull their gift card systems. Apparently, many of the gift card vendor systems are also getting hacked, so many stores have stopped using them. I do not know if this vulnerability exists in all of the different gift card vendors or not. From: Rhonda Huntress Also, I do not remember where, but I know at one place I had multiple L$50 cards and could use more than one card on an item. This would be really nice. I have a couple of stores that I have a lot of gift cards to -- group gifts, lucky chair prizes, etc... ---- but most of them cover maybe 1/5 of the usual price of an outfit there.

CC Why? Sometimes the gift cards are given out as group gifts or in a lucky chair or midnight mania, but most of the time the cards are bought by someone so the merchant gets the money. In many case, especially a new store I am not familiar with, not being able to cover all or almost all of the price with the gift card simply encourages me not to use them and not to shop at that store.

The question isn't whether it can be made secure, the question is whether there's a business case for the operation. I'll agree with "there's not enough demand for this to make it worthwhile implementing right", but not "it can't be done securely". Sorry I thought we talking using two cards at the same time. If the card and vendors were scripted properly -- there is no worry whether a customer will lose 50L - cash or credit. The key that we found is to force a close to the transaction - no matter what. End of Sale, Timeout, Cash Pay etc. The exploit issues could have been avoided by simply doing that. In the event of an SLism, the customer is refunded the credit, the cash, or both. As far as the demand -- there's plenty of it. We have been doing these systems since June '07 and have released a third generation web version -- and its been implemented correctly. We haven't stopped the development after two years because SL is ever changing. We designed the system around a retail store operation instead of 'in the lab.' So we know all of the issues surrounding support, general operation and any curveballs LL throws at us.
