finally took steps for mesh support. This image comes from SLCC found on a blog, it's very strange Linden doesn't find it needed to put something like this on their normal blog, it's only several 100000 creators who will find this important. If you can't see the picture because of hyperlink protection here is the direct link http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/08/3d-meshes-in-sl.html#comments

From: Count Burks it's very strange Linden doesn't find it needed to put something like this on their normal blog, it's only several 100000 creators who will find this important. The probable reason it isn't being publicized by LL itself is, I suspect, clear from the accompanying story: From: New World Notes However, [Tom] Hale made no promises on when they'd be available, so for now at least, this is just a tantalizing glimpse of what's to come. *Sigh*

:/ Whenever it appears as part of the SL experience, it couldn't be soon enough. It might revitalise the membership, too. I hope it is soon. Imagine what people will create with the new meshes...

Just a statue. Now if that was a fully articulated AVATAR mesh I'd get excited.

Seemed like a fully mobile avatar to me......? Naw, it was a statue -- but I do wonder if avatar mesh support could end up as part of this at some point. Might be worth pushing for, now that its clear it's being developed. Either way, it's kinda exciting stuff.

What you're looking at above is a Second Life statue built on a mesh, created from industry standard 3D modeling software."

This thing was running and jumping all over the place, lol.

Notes the lack of prims in that scene...
should I be worried? Meshes won't replace prims, right?

If you look at the little screen for the inventory on the picture you will see there is an object in there selected named Hulk, this indicates that this isn't an early form of experimentation with mesh based objects but something that already made plenty of progress, if you read up on that blog you also see other pictures posted showing examples of dynamic lighting. If Linden already got to that point this indicates that mesh based objects aren't in their early form. As for avatars, once the viewer can handle mesh objects the steps for mesh based avatars aren't huge, they require more work but if the viewer can handle actual meshes, something it couldn't in the past the most important part of the work has been done. It also isn't a surprise that Linden kept working on this and was motivated enough to make this happen as demand for this was very high and other platforms offer or will be offering this in the future. They are essential objects to have in a virtual world and should have been created at the point the sculpted prim was introduced. It seems there is a viewer named the release candidate that has dynamic lighting already integrated but it just isn't set on by default. http://nwn.blogs.com/nwn/2009/04/official-shadows.html

You are now starting to see the LL response to all those features in the Blue Mars threads.
