I came across this site while browsing the news and I wanted to make a mention of it here. I will be looking those old USB sticks out tomorrow :)

http://www.haystacknetwork.com/

From: someone
Haystack is a new program to provide unfiltered internet access to the people of Iran. A software package for Windows, Mac and Unix systems, called Haystack, specifically targets the Iranian government’s web filtering mechanisms.

Similar to Freegate, the program directed against China’s “great firewall,” once installed Haystack will provide completely uncensored access to the internet in Iran while simultaneously protecting the user’s identity. No more Facebook blocks, no more government warning pages when you try to load Twitter, just unfiltered Internet.

From: someone
Because of your support, we are well on our way to meeting our goal of 1,000 USB drives to seed Haystack in Iran. The more we get, the more copies we can distribute.

This is a simple way that you can help the ongoing effort to provide unfiltered internet access to millions of people. We don’t need anything fancy, and the drives can be as small as 128 megs.

Dig through your drawer, fish through your pockets, look in the swag bag from a recent conference; almost everyone has a thumb drive or two lying around.

We’ll update this at least twice a week so you can check back to see how close we are to reaching that goal. No matter where you are in the world, you can help!

/me makes a note to find all of the old usb keys to send them

Hell, given how cheap you can get a 128m stick these days, I may buy a whole case and send that off to them -- I need to add some more to my charitable deductions anyway.

Exactly :) I hope we can drum up a bit of support for these guys and help out those poor people in Iran trying desperately to get the truths out to the world.

Sounds risky to me. Would you, if you were Iranian, beta-test that?

That is for them to decide - this is simply giving a choice, which is what we often spout that everyone should have.

The US will do nothing to me for sending USB keys to this organization -- and I have absolutely no plans to ever be close enough to Iran for them to do anything to me.

There are people still protesting on the streets of Iran. Every night since August 3rd, there have been cries of support for the protesters on trial:

Iranians are still, somehow, finding ways to contact the outside world. They're tweeting, blogging and calling people on their phones, however they can. You *bet* they will beta test Haystack.

Sending a couple of old thumbdrives to some guy in San Francisco isn't going to bring the Feds to your door, nor is Mahmoud Ahmadinejad himself going to come a-knocking.

America prides itself on its love of freedom. Its national anthem declares it to be "the land of the free and the home of the brave". Iran is not free, but are you brave enough to send a thumbdrive to help them keep telling the world that?

Chuck a couple of them in the post. It could be one of the most significant things you ever do :)

If it's one you've used, make sure and erase it thoroughly.

Definitely on this -- download one of the freebie shredder apps and make sure it is thoroughly cleansed.

I don't think Americans are much more free than people in most other western countries. France's motto is something like 'liberte, egalite, fraternite and we Britons 'never, never, never shall be slaves' accoring to one of our patriotic songs!!!! Singing about freedom in an anthem isn't the same thing as actual freedom!

What Americans, Canadians, Australians and also Russians do have is lots of space, which is something most European countries don't have except if it's mountains.

Sheesh, I hate it when I feel I need to don a foil hat just to enter a thread around here, but...yeah. Happy to send drives. No, not worried about it.

Crimeny. Take a deep breath, people.

QFT

I will posting a few new ones on Monday without fail as the old ones I had here were to small. Its a small price to help those that are risking their lives to tell the world what really is going on and in doing so maybe, just maybe they will create a better place for themselves in doing so.

I do not give a stuff about the politics out there however I do care about those that are educating us in the West about what is happening. IMHO everyone should have the freedom of speech and I will do what I can in some small way to help spread the word :)

I admire the Iranian people, especially the women who have played a huge part in these protests, for standing up to their tyrannical, religious government. These drives are pretty cheap now and this is a simple way to contribute to the cause of freedom - human to human, nationality aside - through technology.

Maybe we should put a copy of SL on the drives before we ship 'em off. Give 'em a REAL taste of freedom. Although I suppose for some this could be more like a whap up side the head with an OD of freedom :D

PS - just kidding, I do not advocate hijacking this fine cause.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out where to download the Haystack software from so I could have it ready at home.

Have you found any cheap ones? I looked for some today while I was out and the best I saw were 2GB for ten bucks.

Just drop 'em in the mail to this organization. No one will have any idea who donated them.

Or put the name and address of someone you knew who was a real jackass in high school on them.

Lol, I have sent things through places like - not to hijack so, a place that sends school stuff to Iraqi kids - so I'm not as paranoid as I sound. However this seems like helping citizens break the law and that makes me a tad nervous.

Plus the only way to truly cleanse a drive is something like 'debug' it although most people have not heard of it. And I lost the papers telling me how to do it...

Chris might have a point as well, at least within about ten years' time.

Wasn't really addressing you Clarissa...just a paranoid tone I've observed that I'm finding idiotic and tiresome.
