The rolling restart is what is doing that, and it is right up on top of the status page.

That's fine if you have the status page up, but some people are complaining of not getting the warnings in world

In this day and age, if people still can't get that the place to look on the internet for what's going on with an internet service - especially anyone who's been using SL for more than, oh, a week - there isn't much hope for them.

Welcome to SL, where borked is a way of existing. Or in LL's case, the state of being.

Hmm.. apparently, it IS the rolling restart that caused it, or at least made a restart error more obvious.

From: Grid Status
[Update @ 9:00 am PDT] The rolling restart has been halted for the time being as there are a number of regions that have failed to restart properly. The engineers are currently investigating this issue. Any regions that may currently be offline should be brought back online once the situation has been resolved.

Edit to add: *snorts* I wish it'd update the date of the post when it gets updated. But, again, this is LL we're talking about.

The rolling restart in the grid status was for yesterday, there was nothing on the status page about today's problems. I don't mind people telling me I am wrong, but the insults were not necessary. And as far as backing off, I do not back off if I feel passionate enough about something. I am sorry if I curled some peoples' hair, but I will not be talked down to, no matter who or what the problem is. But I do apologize if I was wrong,

[Updated] Rolling Restart for server version 1.27.2
Posted by Status Desk on August 6th, 2009 at 06:45 pm PDT
[Update August 7, 2009 @ 9:00 am PDT] The rolling restart has been halted for the time being as there are a number of regions that have failed to restart properly. The engineers are currently investigating this issue. Any regions that may currently be offline should be brought back online once the situation has been resolved.

[Posted August 7, 2009 @ 7:29 am PDT] We’ve completed the rolling restarts for the first half of the Second Life grid.

A rolling restart for 1/2 of the Second Life grid will deploy at 7:15 am PDT. We apologize for the delay and any inconvenience caused.

As with all of our server deploys, each region will be restarted once during one of the rolling restart periods. Most regions should be down no more than 5-10 minutes, although some fraction of the regions will take 20-30 minutes to upgrade. If your region stays down for more than 30 minutes, please contact support. Each region will receive warnings starting 5 minutes before that region is restarted.

Please check back for further updates.

I'm finding the forums are running very slowly today - slow to build the screen and to page. Is anyone else noticing this or is it just me?

No, LL ninja edits things.. seriously. You can't go by the dates on the grid status blog, because they don't always update with the updates. Also, I think there are two grid status servers and they don't always update in sync.

As you should be! Just kidding...

The grid status page has been a mess in the past. They run a few different servers to spread the load and for whatever reason the servers don't update and you can get 3 different pages each with less updated information than the last. I once opened the grid status in 3 different browsers and had 3 different updated pages. One to the newest, one to the previous update and one to the previous previous update.. Refreshing didn't seem to matter as the server that was feeding the details wasn't feed the new information yet... I think they may have fixed that somewhat though.

If we can't expect them to run a simple grid status page properly what makes anyone think they can run the grid properly?

There is a good point brought up here, in-world notices. There was once a time when nothing important would ever happen without an in-world notice. Rolling restarts are beginning? People who are logged in would be told about it so they know to expect strange things (even in sims that have already been restarted or won't be for another four or five hours, it would still impact them). Transactions are failing, or you can't rez things? In-world notice pops up. Everything we needed to know about was accompanied by an official LL announcement.

These days that's extremely rare because we are all expected to read these things on the grid status page. How many of us really spend all our time obsessively monitoring that page for every little change that comes up while we're using SL? In some groups I belong to people sometimes will copy and paste grid status page notifications if they see them, to make sure they're not missed. I like that, shows better support for LL's customers than that which LL themselves provide.

They need to bring back in-world notification.
