I have a free skin, but when I "wear" it or drag it onto my avatar, it shows up as a big box on my hand etc.

What am I doing wrong?

Probably the skin is inside the box. Try rezzing it on the ground, choose Open from the right-click menu, and Copy to Inventory the stuff inside which (we hope) includes the skin itself.

Make sure you delete the box on the ground when you're done. Cleaning up after yourself is good manners.

well it is always good to find a sandbox that is pretty empty if possible. Or a store with a rezzing parcel for box opening.

But what you can do if you don't want to hunt for a build enabled parcel is
1. wear the box on your hand
2. right click the box and edit
3. click on the more button if the tabs are not visible.
4. Click on the contents tab
5. open your inventory (bottom right button)
6. open the body parts folder so you can drag into it
7. from the box contents drag the skin (has a little man icon) from contents across the screen and drop it right into the body parts folder.
8. close the build tool
9. take off the box
10. in the folder where you dropped it right click and wear your new skin.

Not every landowner allows objects from other people to be rezzed (put) or opened there.

As has been said, find a sandbox, shop, or other place which does allow it.

Not even on Help Island? hmmm....

Sandbox? How do I find those?

And, Anne, thanks for the 10 step work-around....

Sandboxes are for everyone to unpack and open things or esp to create. Find a good one and you will see it cluttered with the good, bad and downright ugly prim creations. Some sandboxes are for serious builders but usually you will find as long as you clean up your mess you will be left alone.

A trick to help you find someone inworld who will help you, you can take my name and drop me a message, is to click on someone and you will see a Pie circle. click on Profile and you will see their profile. Now if people are friendly and willing to help a noob out, sorry but you are one till you get Damned Good Hair, and you can ask them for help. Avoid anyone who says in their profile "Pish OFF, Leave me along, go find yer MOTHER yer WIMP". They're the ones to be left on their own...permamently.

You will learn so much more with a friendly AV stood next to you going through things step by step and the best thing about SL is you cannot see them in RL shaking their heads and going "prat"!

One note - this 10-step process will not work all the time. I don't remember the exact criteria, but some some things cannot be done when you are wearing the box -- maybe if the item is No Copy, it cannot be removed while the box is worn or something like that.

No copy cannot be taken out of a box that way. At least the last time I tried. Whenever that was.

Right click - Mac Users?
12-25-2009 18:12
I am using a Mac. What do I do since I can't right click?

How do I open boxes, etc?

Two more questions

2. Can I delete items from my inventory? It won't let me drag them to the trash and i dont see an option to "delete" when I highlight.

3. My avatar has a different skin on the face than on the body. I've removed the other skin but its still like that. looks like im wearing a pale body suit with a tan face. tried changing the color of skin lighter or darker but doesn't match up....

ugh... help

Strongly suggest you buy a 3-button mouse for your Mac. The vast majority of daily use of SL requires a three-button mouse to work normally.

Holding down the Option key on a Mac while clicking is the same thing as right-clerck with Windows.

You can right click on a Mac.

You just need to get a better mouse.

I recommend the Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse. It's only US$15 and it's by far the best readily-available scroll mouse. No, there was no explosion when I plugged it into my Mac.

This is good place to let folks know I have two parcels where you can rez / unpack items with a two hour time limit. There is also a semi-private public changing room several hundred meters in the sky in both places. I say semi-private because no place in SL is really private. There is nothing being sold in either place. They're just for relaxing.

The links are:

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Rosslyn/161/25/811
and

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Fushida/232/90/79

The latter one gets a little more use so may be a bit less private.

[ETA: Dang! I didn't realize this thread was from a month ago. So my post is probably moot. Well, most of them are anyway. ]

You CAN enable right click on a Mac, although I have forgotten how. I forget how each time 10 minutes after I have had to do so. Lol.

Just google it though. You will need your right button a fair amount in SL.

I generally do it by plugging in a multi-button mouse. I haven't had to "enable" it since I stopped using OS 9.

Hold down Command (apple) key to right click in SL with a 1-button mouse. That is unusual because every other Mac program is hold down Control to right click.

You still have to. If you want to click separately, at least.

Nuh-uh. Not with a real multi-button mouse.

Now if you have one of Apple's mice that don't actually have multiple buttons, sure, but you won't catch THIS ferret buying an Apple mouse ever again. Nuh-uh.
