Please help - logged in this morning and my avatar went totally black. I have rebaked several times, logged in and out and even updated my graphic card drivers.

I have an Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS

But none of the above has solved my problem. The black avatar is when I am in the RC viewer, when I log into the normal viewer I can see my skin but my clothing is white :((

Not sure what to do now!

Do a search of the forums, someone else had the same problem recently, but I can't recall how they resolved it.

ok so I was very kindly given a 'black avatar fix kit' which I wore and it solved the problem in the normal viewer.

However it didn't solve it for the RC viewer.

Can anyone suggest any other solutions for this? I have tried almost everything I can think of!

TIA

sadly I just logged in to the normal viewer again and my trousers have returned to being only white in texture *sigh

Any advice on what to try would be gratefully received - thank you

My avatar's face wasn't black as in the color black, but the skin tinted as darkly as possible. It appears to be a problem with palletized textures, and it seems that when it bakes that way, it will affect you no matter what your viewer or hardware.

In the advanced menu > rendering > features , uncheck palletized textures. Rebake once or twice and that should do it.

Hi Cristalle

The 'pallatized textures' no longer exists in the latest RC viewer... :((

So I am no further forward. I can't understand why this has suddenly just happened??

Roll back your nVidia video card driver to 175.19. Newer drivers trigger the palletized texture bug. The 175 series is the most SL-friendly.

What about the freezing issue? I have not had the texture bug issue but constant freezing issues and am running the 8600GTS from Nvidia.

Does it freeze at any particular times? If it tends to happen when you rotate your camera, it's probably an issue with occlusion culling. Turn off object-object occlusion, and it should solve the problem. Your overall frame rate will drop a bit, but it will be more stable.

You might also want to try lowering the texture memory slider in Hardware Options, and/or lowering your max bandwidth setting.

If none of those things works, then I'm fresh out of advice for now.

Thanks Chosen!

Only really find a correspondence with anything when there is a load on SL like from around 3 pm SL to around say 7 SL maybe...then starts again about 8 SL... I can't have a conversation without freezing for a few seconds let alone build.

Tried the other fixes suggested above and many others. This has been happening since around Mid July onward prior to that I have few issues even when others were lagging out. I have no issues other then SL and this current machine was built especially for SL. The MacBook I purchased in Oct runs it fine but there are ...LOL...operator errors in using that machine yet not to mention the small notebook screen.

Thanks!

When troubleshooting, it's best to search the support portal, the wiki and Google before easter-egging. The Second Life support site has an entry about this very phenomenon.

with all due respect Baloo, I think I am quite within my rights to post a query on this forum and ask for help, for your information I did several searches before I posted the query and none of the solutions worked. If you were in a rush to get to a meeting in a place you hadn't visited before and you got lost, would you then spend hours trying down every street or simply ask for help??

For the most part most people on here are very friendly and helpful and it was a query that I needed urgent help with, so to all of the above that have been very kind in spending some time replying with a useful response then thank you so much.

I'd look at the city map bolted to the sidewalk every other block. Pretty much any city larger than five blocks long that isn't ass-backwards gets enough tourists to install these anyway. I'm just saying, when the answer's in plain sight, don't wait on us to point it out.

that's the thing Baloo - the answer isn't in plain sight - it still isn't solved and all the searching didn't help - hence asking on the forum for help, from those kind souls that simply want to help and offer advice not patronise others. If you don't like people asking for help on a forum then I suggest you don't read them! Merry Christmas!!

Well, this might work.

I had an issue with some clothing. For example, I would put on boots or pants and find my avie turned black to the waist. Other clothing would cause other parts of my avie to display odd texturing. Changing drivers and setting had no effect.

I finally got a suggestion from anothe resident. Maybe it will help you.

Do a ctrl-alt-F7 then ctrl-alt-R. You might have to tap ctrl-alt-R several times. I find that sometimes changing clothes requires me to do this again.

Good luck with it.

That is the palletized textures fix. I wonder if that keyboard shorcut still works.

Sure it is. Most people generally go to a company's support website first for help, and then google if they can't find it. It's common sense.

I've had the same problems before, and through several months of teeth gnashing I found a few solutions. I can't guarantee they will work for everyone as my current gaming rig has a rather picky chipset and likes to work in weird ways.

First off I understand everyone has various video card technology, so the forums here are a great way to get some insight, its just putting together the pieces which I myself have found to be a pain in the rear end.

I have the BFG 7600GS 512mb nVidia series video card, and have run into driver related issues with graphics in Second Life, everything from color cycling to exploding avatar and primitive geometry. What I have found are two things that seemed to have fixed at least these issues:

1.) Rolling back my video drivers to previously known good/working versions. In my case the nVidia drivers from 5/2/2008, 7.15.11.7516. Anything newer results in Second Life operating oddly.

2.) Checking my mainboard settings for my AGP aperature in my BIOS. My board was set to run AGP at 2x speed with a 64mb video aperature. I chaged to my board's maximum 4X at 256mb aperature and Second Life (And Oblivion) run well. Additionally you will want to see if your mainboard manufacturer has any updated BIOS or updated BIOS drivers. Don't just rely on Windows Update, and I'm not sure about Apple's computer line, but I would LOVE to get a Mac just to tinker with one. ^^

3.) I've upgraded to Windows Vista, I had freezing issues related to low system ram, ran 512mb, then 1gb, then 2gb with Vista. More system RAM means more memory for the operating system to be happy and games to run without swapping memory between your RAM and HD as often. And on my laptop I've disabled Windows Aero and SL runs just fine.

4.) I've had my antivirus ignore scanning the Second Life program directories, this speeds things up a tad and may also help with your freezing issue.

5.) I've also tried the various client versions, the RC client runs extremely well for me, I've only had a few crashes related to bugs, but can run often times past my 2 hour "limit" where the main client would get unstable.

But the key is to experiment with things. And if you have Windows XP or Vista System Restore is a good friend.

The problem is not everyone's PC is identical. You may be running say DELL Uber PC and someone else is running the same, but somewhere between the purchase dates DELL changes X component either due to supply or cost. Suddenly the two systems aren't identical, and have their own unique issues.

A great example would be a client of mine who had company technician take her laptop and set it up for their corporate network, added antivirus, and removed a VITAL application from her system along with her contacts lists.

After an hour of searching the system I had determined that the company technician had indeed taken off files they deemed "unimportant to the task at hand" from the system. Thankfully my client had a recent backup from a week prior, the files and applications were restored.

In the case of Second Life, things vary GREATLY between systems, things change all the time, updates, hardware, SL updates... So one solution doesn't fit every user. What works for my system may or may not work for yours, what works for my laptop may not work for you. Each system has its own unique personality, even identical machines purchased from the same company will each have their own unique issues.

Don't assume that the answer is clear and right in front of someone. As a MCSE technician I've seen my fair share of issues between systems. Even Windows and program updates can cause a machine that was once running great to suddenly start misbehaving. So don't take it for granted that everyone is as tech savvy as you or a trained technician.

pardon me for not appearing to be most ppl - perhaps you should learn to read properly then you would realise that I had done all of those things and the problem still hasn't resolved.

Thank you for seeing this Millie and for responding to Baloo's response. Thank you also for offering very useful advice, I will try your suggestions and let you know :)
