So why did you first come to the SL Forums?

With all the talk of the uber-lock in our future here, I thought it might be nice to talk of beginnings rather than endings. So I offer this.
Why did you first come to the SL Forums? Was it a question you needed answering, was it boredom and a work computer that was unblocked, or was there another reason? What's this place been for you, random past-time or community space.
Let's take a moment to focus on what got us here, what has kept us here, and why we would care about this set of clunky, borked discussion boards...

I believe I was trying to find the solution to some technical problem. I think it was the underwater terrain goes black bug.

I first came here Not *that* long after I started in Second Life, as you can tell over to the left. I believe I first came by because I was having an issue with SL, likely the troubles with persistent avatar invisibility that was going on way back then. It's always one bug or another, ya know? The forums were a different place back then, with the old "General Discussion" board in full swing. I did not come by that often then, but did start to get into it about March 2007 or so. I was firmly entrenched within the kid community then, and was, yes, answering all the icky ageplay threads that were accusing all kids of being pervs. You'd think I'd say "nothing changes" here, but I won't. Back then, being a kid 'round here was not a happy thing, and it took A Good Long Time for people to begin to accept little old kid me 'round here. I think I learned a thing or two as well in those old discussions. I remember General Discussion closing. Back then I only had something like 200 posts to my name. Into Resident Answers many of us went where, well, I've been ever since. What I've found here are some good people, people who've made me laugh, who I've felt sorrow for at times, and all that comes with a community. There's been the occasional frictions, but they've never lasted all that long. By and large, while we've had our "Friday Threads," or random flame wars (/me points to a couple current 'discussions'), and our share of issues, we've also been a credit to this world. In our own way, we've made this place a better one. This has been a community I've been happy to be a part of for the last three and a half years. Edit: How did I end up with over 6000 posts? That has *got* to be a bug!

Someone told me that the forums were dull and humourless, and that I might prove an antidote. Pep (wonders what they told Jig. )

It was just another place where I knew a lot of people already. Early adopters tend to be a tight community, and go everywhere together. Some places stick. Some don't.
When Metaplace opened up, I knew most of them there too. Though I have to admit, metaplace didn't really quite turn out to be a place I'm into, or not yet, anyway. I'm still in touch with people I've known online since 1987. Of course, back then it was called BBS's...

Information junkie. Joined SL, saw there was a forum, started poking around... I've drifted away and back in again as RL has dictated, but mostly I've been around, even if mostly reading.
I can't begin to say how much this forum and the friendships I've made here have helped me in my SLife. Hugs all around!

I can't remember why I came into the forums, I think it was because the forum button was next to the downloads one?
Oh I went to Metaplace for a couple of days, it scared me!

I've read an article in Popular Science. Burning Life just just starting for that year, and I love it, so I kinda hang around all year just for the next Burning Life. Also when I first join, the forums where for the elite, not just anybody could post or read them. It was/is a good source of information.

I came to the forums shortly after I joined, because I was planning to buy land and wanted to do as much research as possible before spending any of my limited RL funds. My first real memory of the forums is people complaining that it wasn't fair that those of us who put the time into research should get better First Land than those who waited for things to be handed to them on a plate, and that taking efforts to spend my money wisely somehow meant I was neglecting real life and was socially inferior to people who wanted to get the rewards of SL without any work. *rolls eyes* Fortunately, I didn't get that from any of the forum regulars. *g*
I lurk a lot more than I post here, and you can safely assume I'm reading any land-related thread and many of the general useful-question/helping-people type threads in Resident Answers. I skip most of the social chatty topics, although I confess I occasionally peek at the train-wreck/ambulance-watching threads. Community and socializing is a great side benefit, but I've always been here for the useful information first and foremost.

I came because I was trying to edit an AO but could never find it after I'd set it down. I was leaving the little buggers all over the place. (In fact, I recently found two of them in the Forum Cartel Hangout.)
It was driving me crazy, and for some reason there isn't a section of the Knowledge Base or a question in the FAQ that deals with this issue, so here I am.
ETA - No, actually, I just looked again and saw that I came because I wanted to be a neko but wanted to be sure I knew what it was before I put the ears on.

I had a severe problem with my skybox on the first land I bought (only a couple of weeks in SL at the time). Asked a question and got a ton of answers, then got to know Lindal and a couple of you who are still my friends.

I came here just over 2 years ago, a few weeks after TP'ing off Help Island and continuously finding empty sims everywhere I went. Everything looked lovely, but I couldn't find any "people" around. I needed help locating where to go to find things to do with some life. That was also just about when the Forum Cartel was taking form, thankfully, so I did find things to do rather quickly thereafter.

I came to the forums the first day I joined SL, figuring it the best place to get some answers. I had seen some weird error in the Orientation Area, something about a 'grey goo fence', and was completely mystified as to what that meant. I asked the question, and never received an answer from anyone, but doing some searches came up with the answer eventually. I remember the forums seemed very big and imposing then. They have gone through a lot of changes over the years and It will be a very sad day when The forums no longer exist. (because no, there's no real replacement yet. )

I first came when I joined to check out information on building tips, and scripting tips. I just started writing recently though. I figured with the merging about to take place I may as well jump in. I never posted on XstreetSL either. I figured I'd start adding my 2 cents and reading various opinions from other members in the community.

Thanks, Mari...you actually made me search back and find my first post. I'd been in SL about two months before I joined the forums. My first post was a typical "Lindal chimes in with her two cents" reply in a thread asking about being able to change avatar names. My first out-and-out Advice post was my third posting, chronologically. I've always been a forum junkie. I've actually bought RL products because they had an active, supportive forum community on the Web. I sensed, in this place, the same sort of forum family I'd found in other venues. A group of people who were all passionate about something, and wanted to share that passion with others, even when they couldn't actually be using the product. Yes, we're a community. An extended family, of sorts. I know a ton of people here I've never met in world. I will miss these forums terribly when LL rips out their guts. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure the community won't die. Most of us will simple move en masse elsewhere, some other place where we can chat and laugh together, bicker and argue with each other, cry and hug and offer support when that's needed. I don't know yet where it will be...we really should look around and find a place we can all (or most of us) agree on. The Cartel forums, or Second Citizen, or SLU...it doesn't matter, as long as most of the regulars go to that place. It won't be LL's borums, though. That software does not permit the kind of community that a forum, a good forum, should have. (I would rail here about LL being a communications company that can't communicate, and how that's bound to make them fail...but I can think of another communications company with the same problem that's wildly successful...Verizon. Have you ever tried navigating their websites? ) In any event, it's been a little over two years since I came here, and I count all the hours of reading posts and writing replies as time well spent. Cheers!

I first came for the land forum (where you used to actually be able to leave issues for a Linden to look at). Then I found the rest of it, and it was a way I could kind of connect to SL when things were slow at work.
