From: Jackson Racer Noooww I’m really confused on the whole Island and Estate purchase. Say if you go to the LL land store and purchase a region; is that an island or just a flat parcel of land? I read where it states that the land isn’t contiguous to other newly purchased regions but I wasn’t sure if that meant it couldn’t be connected to other smaller parcels.
What if I wanted to purchase only 1/8th or a 1/4th of a region? Is that were land searches come into play?
Can you tell I’m confused on the whole process? Should I just give up and continue to hang out in sandboxes?
I found it very interesting about the mystery cube though… makes me want one! Hi Jackson! When you go through the purchase process, you can choose from 4 default island styles, or you can upload a terramap of your own (I couldn't figure that out so I just picked one of the defaults and terraformed it all myself) You cannot buy a space contiguous to someone else's island, but you can add one contiguous to one of your own. Islands are whole regions. There is no other choice available. This process is totally separate from purchasing mainland (or resold estate land) which you see in the land searches. There's nothing fun about the mystery box, unfortunately. But if you want one, all you have to do is pay the $1675 plus $295 a month (first month free!) When my Island got delivered, and I needed some extra help understanding some stuff, Spike Linden came and gave me some pointers, but told me I could delete the box. I'm sure you'll outgrow the sandboxes soon enough, but enjoy your trouble-free innocence while you can!

Jackson, when you purchase land through the "Land Store" you are buying one entire region, aka Private Island, or Private Estate. That is 65536 square meters of land, in a 256x256 meter square. It is placed off on its own and does not touch any other land (unless you are attaching it to another private island you already own.)
In this context, "land" can also be water -- like an island surrounded by water, or even just open empty water. If you can walk on it, swim on it, or fly over it, it's "land".
If you want to buy less than a whole entire region / island, you have lots of options. Inworld you can use the Land Sales tab in Search. That is your best bet really - to buy existing land from another resident. There is a whole topic in there though - Mainland vs Estate, and I'm not going to get into that because it's a biggie and I have a bias / conflict of interest.
Suffice to say, do your homework, search this forum, and read the knowledge base.
There are pros and cons, caveats and gotchas, for both mainland and estate, and the more informed you are the less chance there is that you'll be disappointed after-the-fact.

I placed an order last Monday, and it was delivered this Monday or Tuesday. I've got many hours of setup and building ahead of me this weekend. And about the plywood mystery box, I'm going to turn mine into a nice cornerstone type monument with a plaque stating the day the sim was delivered. People that notice that it was created by a Linden will think they set one up on everyone's island.

Thanks for the info Argos. No joy here yet, but I've got my fingers crossed for 'soon'. I like the idea of a cornerstone or monument. If I get a linden cube on my openspace sims, I'll keep it this time and try to do something interesting with it... -Atashi

Well it was just about 7 days exactly -- the order went in Monday night last week, and Monday night this week they were delivered! so -- YAY!
Interestingly, there were no mysterious Linden cubes at all :/ Maybe they don't do that any more, or maybe they found out we were going to make them collectables or whatever.
Either way, I'll be nice and busy for a while designing and building.
