Warning:
Longwinded, sorry.
Backstory:
My friend, Samantha Glume, bought a skin and shape from Skin Deep a year ago and never adjusted a thing about it. She added her Gurl6 hair and voila, she was born and began attiring herself in clothes she was drawn to and that looked good on her avatar.
Never once, despite the fact that she's pretty much a cookie cutter of a great shape and skin combo, has she or I ever met anyone else who looks like her... when we thought we would.
Backstory the Second:
Last night I created an alt for the purpose to help with building projects (testing) and also to act as business banker. Any way... I created Luneko Ninetails and out of laziness decided to give her my shape. I then went on the journey of all new residents, clutching my own notecard for newbie freebies or near freebies, to acquire skins and hair.
I was shocked how much she did NOT look like me at all. It's the same shape I thought! Even the freebie skin tone I picked was close to mine and she could maybe pass as my sister.
I opted for short hair just to be different from my own hairs. Then I started feeling really naked without ears and tail. So over to Zoe's where I was lured by neko skins as well. I thought what the hell, I bought a neko skin, feet, ears and tail. I went back to where I bought my eyes and bought Luneko a similar pair (different colour, same style). NOW she was looking like me.
And finally, I went to Bare Rose Tokyo and bought the one outfit I don't own (LOL) and even with the short hair and neko skin, Luneko is like my twin.
Observation / Curiosity / Questions:
I am really really surprised that it took so much effort (not that I'm complaining - had much fun) to create a near twin of myself. I'm amazed at how we create an image of ourselves that truly is unique even if others share astounding similarities.
What are your thoughts?
What have you done to yourself to create your identity and have you ever run into someone who really looks like you?
My other question -- how long did it take you to invent yourself in SL or are you an ever changing avatar?
Sorry about long windedness.

I usually spend a fair amount of time 'fine tuning' my shape and choosing the skin and other accessories I will use. And Ceera tends to have neon green eyes, which makes her a stand-out in most crowds.
I did try to make one of my alts look a lot like Ceera recently. I gave the alt brown eyes, but the rest was pretty much the same. And yes, they did look more like sisters than twins.

It took me about a good 6 months to get my look settled. I have added a few bits and pieces since, the latest a new tattoo with special meaning. Hair, skin and shape haven't changed since I got them put together.
No, I have never seen another AV that looked like mine. Bradley might come the closest. But I think I have a bigger build then he does and a darker skin tone.

I spent a couple of months getting myself together. I emphasized what I like about myself, minimized what I don't like, trying to get a recognizable to me, if idealized characterization. Once done I put myself in the hands of a certain well known Forum Resident/Shape Maker for some fine tuning and that was it. I don't need any futher changes or tweaks, I don't even vary my hair color much.

I have met no one that looks exactly like me, although I generally can tell who has the same skin. My shape is custom and rarely changes these days. My hair, yeah, it's Gurl 6 but I have added a highlight that makes the brown nice and deep. The clothes... well, after the huge sale at Last Call, I'm sure I'm hardly unique at all! But again, my shape is my saving grace.

when i created my alt, i gave her my shape and some pocket money she went to blaze and bought a suite, got some hair and a L100 skin when she returned, i had to look several times while standing next to her and wonder "is that my shape???", i went and got the L100 skin aswell and slapped it on and still though "is that my shape???" went to blaze to pickup the suite aswell and get the same hair, slap it on and "that is my shape o.O" changed back to my normal hair and it looked completly different again, normal clothing and only a handfull of very similar facial features are recongisable if you now the shape in&out or it would pass for a complete new avi

I made Melissa to be what I thought would be about average height: Body size of 55. Boy, was I ever mistaken. lol
I seldom meet anyone even close to my height, much less look like me doing so.

I stuck with one shape for many months last year, once I'd settled on which make of skin to use (a choice that took weeks and WEEKS of searching in itself!). Then after a relationship ended and I was feeling unsettled, I started to make tweaks here and there more often. I've been surprised just how much very minor changes to head and facial sliders in combination will alter appearance. Observant friends notice differences too, so it's not just me being ultra critical. A change of skin brand seem to make a lot of difference to an av's look and you often find you need to alter facial shape to suit a new skin. Some skins seem more brand-identifiable in almost any shape than others, so that you're more likely to meet another person with a similar look. On the other hand, a change of hairstyle can make someone's face look quite different, even in an unchanging shape and skin, just as it can in RL. The number of variations that -could- be achieved seems so enormous, I'm not that surprised to see few avs that look identical. I don't think I've ever met another Aes. -- Aes

No one looks like me.
Or Carli for that matter.
guess in my business would be pretty embarissing if I couldnt come up with a unique look.
My off-the-shelf shapes are Mod and I never resell my custom work, because of this very topic.

My alt is either white white (like goth white) or this really cool psychedelic blue with white streaks running through the skin. She used to have my shape but I decided that she needed to be her own person so changed her completely.
And no, I've never met anyone who looks exactly like me. Thank goodness!

When I first created my alt, my limited imagination has us looking almost identical and is was just too strange. I set about changing both of them and finally ended up with something I am happy with. I still play around with hair styles, but I do not mess with the shape much anymore and I haven't changed skin or basic hair color in a long time. On a challenge, I now need to create a male alt. It shall be quite interesting to see what kind of look I end up with there.

If I wanted to be totally unique I could I would just use my own skin and shape, which neither has sold any of as of yet, as well as some clothes and footwear and hair I made myself that I have never put up for sale
totally unique look
as for how I look now, I change so often it is hard to say if anyone looks like me
I have never seen any

Avatar Looks Like Me...RL!
01-12-2008 09:53
I ran into an AV yesterday that looks VERY much like me...RL! I want my AV to be very similar to my RL look and have the fair skin/red hair/blue eyes (although I wear green a lot in SL) thing going. But this AV that I met by chance looks sooo much like me RL that I did a double take. Her skin is from the same place/line as mine (Gala Phoenix/Alabaster). I made a beeline to pick up a demo of that skin after I spoke to my RL "twin" but it still didn't look as much like "me" on my AV as it did on her. Which means it had to be the shape. Hmmmm...do I stay with the skin/shape I've been happy with for the last 7 months or try to get closer to my RL look....that another AV has? /wanders off to ponder this

It makes me laugh a bit now to think how much time I spent on my shape when the entire package can look so different so easily. So, has your alt started demanding an allowance yet?

Good luck with your experiments! Now that I think about it - the person behind that AV said she spent a lot of time getting her AV to look like her RL self...which means there is a RL person out there who looks like me...RL. And my parents told me I was an only child. ~ ~ ~ I asked where she got the skin & hair (also my same RL hairstyle *hums Twilight Zone theme some more), but stopped before asking about shape. I envision many hours of fiddling with the slider bars coming up.

From: Lucrezia Lamont What have you done to yourself to create your identity and have you ever run into someone who really looks like you?
My other question -- how long did it take you to invent yourself in SL or are you an ever changing avatar?
I've never seen anyone who looks like me... mostly because I wear horns. I've seen a few other people who wear horns constantly, but none are like mine. When I was brand new, I started with a pale skin/bright red hair combo; about six months along, I started playing with the horned look, and eventually settled on the shape/texture of my current ones. Now I don't feel like myself without them. My appearance does change a lot, as far as skin and hair; I'm usually tanned, but not always, and my hair is usually some shade of red, but again, not always. I like to change a lot to suit my mood, my outfit, etc. Different skins really do give a totally new look, even with the same face shape-- that's always fun to play with. My shape was made by myself and refined by myself and a good friend, so I think it's pretty unique; I've tried to customize it in ways that please me and also make it less cookie-cutter, like a little extra height, slightly wider hips, etc. I still make refinements every now and then, but it's more along the lines of updating than completely changing; Ilia's pretty much found her true look by now.

Nobody at all looks like me. Took me a while too, to finally come to what I am. I have a skin which was a very good freebie from SinSkin, but my shape is totally created by me. I have a good "eye" for correct proportions, especially faces. And once I got those intense green eyes in place, well, I called it quits lol. I've thought about changing the skin at times, but I really love the soft color of the one I have, so why bother?
I think I managed to create an Av which is unique in appearance. I look around at others, and am quite surprised when I see photos of myself, it almost looks "real" in comparison to others I've seen. Even my Alt(s) do not look like others I've seen around.
The only major change I've made in months, would be the addition of my tattoo, which is deeply meaningful to me on many levels. I have to say, this addition really feels like "me". It was the right thing to do, didn't know how much it would impact me, but it has.
Other than that, I'm completely happy with who I am. Can't see making any other changes. Although, I change my hair a lot. And I mean A LOT. But, always remain blonde, unless, of course, I'm doing some costume which requires another color.

I don't think I've ever seen anyone who looks like my twin. Aside from the newbie default avatars I do see a certain male shape/skin/hair combination quite often.

Nope. No one looks quite like me. My av is a synthesis and customization of several different avatars, and I am always tweaking it to make it more "me".
Someone would have to want to look exactly like me, then spend the time and the effort to do it that I already have invested. Probably not going to happen, unless someone is just into mimicking people for kicks.

My av has settled at this shape after a number of moderate tweaks. Maybe I'm just bored with altering my look, or maybe I've got something I'm happy with, but it hasn't changed significantly in months. My shape is my own work, and none of the shapes I've seen for sale look anywhere close. I don't look bizarre or non-human in any way, and my standard look includes skin & hair from very common vendors (Naughty skin & Calico hair), but I've still never met anyone looking anything like me.
I have one look that I consider the 'real' me. Everything else (and I have goth, neko, oriental, doll & several other variations) I consider to be dressing up. Whatever else I change, I don't alter my shape (unless its for a very non-human av, and that's rare). I think of my other hair as wigs, and skin as advanced forms of makeup, as if the 'real' Kelli is under there somewhere.
