Most people I've met in SL refer to themselves in the first person, as do I. However, I've met a few who refer to themselves in the third person and say "her or he" when referring to their avatars. I'm not sure what to make of this detached third person thing. When you're talking with someone, do you say "I need to make HER (or his) eyes a different color" or do you say "MY eyes" for example? How do you refer to your avatar? No, I'm not a surveyor LOL. It's just one of those things that struck me as unusual the first time I heard it done. (I prefer people to refer to themselves and their avatars in the first person. The third person thing makes me uncomfortable to be honest. LOL) What do you prefer? Edit: Clarification. I'm referring to in-world encounters, not how you refer to yourself in the forums ~~~~

I don't consider my avi in the first person, bacause I'm the first person. My avatar is a 'he' and he's a sleazebag and has far too much sex for my liking

First person, always. Using the third person would feel odd.

Amaranthim is - Me, Hera is Me. The others are Her since I do not embody them, I only animate them temporarily for particular reasons. In example, two are to advertise business, one had a life but is now only to hold land and the others are play names only.

Thanks. Yes, I edited my post to reflect that it makes me feel odd, too..in fact really uncomfortable..but then that's my problem, not the other person's..to each their own. I just prefer to talk with YOU, as you exist in SL, not 3 people.
If I'm kissing someone, I'm not going to say "Look she's kissing you!!" That's just...odd...to me anyway. I'm also not going to ask someone "Should she change her dress?" I'm going to say "Do you want me to change MY dress?"

From: Fox Marchant I don't consider my avi in the first person, bacause I'm the first person. My avatar is a 'he' and he's a sleazebag and has far too much sex for my liking Than I suggest you have nothing more to do with him. He'll corrupt you if you hang out with him too much.

From: BreninLlwyd Caeran Thanks. Yes, I edited my post to reflect that it makes me feel odd, too..in fact really uncomfortable..but then that's my problem, not the other person's..to each their own I wonder if referring to one's avatar in the third person allows behaviour one would not usually consider? Sort of, it's not me, it's her/him? But yes, as you say, to each their own. But for my own avatar: she is me, I am she, coo, coo cachoo (or however that Beetles song went)

From: Fox Marchant ah....but kay I can't resist his wandering ways Serious, uncritical question though: does referring to your avatar in the third person free you to do bad things?

I use both first and third person when referring to my avie. When in world I use first person 99% of the time. When in the forums I use third person about 90% of the time.

Depends what you mean by 'bad' things. I don't class anything anyone does in SL as 'bad', because hello! it's not real. Unlike many others, I can take or leave SL. Having done that and been there, there isn't really very much that shocks me or urges me to get engrossed in the 'game'. And believe me, I've done the lot, including mixing RL and SL and it isn't pleasant. Nowadays and to preserve my sanity, I view SL as just something different to do, when I need to switch off from work....sorry it won't accord with many others feelings on this, but I need to keep a firm grip of reality these days.

"me" if I'm refering to the av I'm currently using (or my main if i've an alt in for testing), "her" if I'm not (or objectively "my" ... but not because I particulary identify or disassociate, but because it simplifies conversation. ...unless there is a character reason to use the third person.

Most of the time, when in-world, Ceera is "in-Character" and you're interacting with the fictional character first-person. About the only time I refer to any of my avatars in the thrid-person form when in-world is when talking "out of character", such as when explaining background information for a roleplaying scenario, or when talking about things that the avatar would have no knowledge of in-character.
In some in-character interactions, Ceera will use the same sorts of speech patterns as royalty would use when referring to themselves. Such as "We are pleased that you could attend us this day." or "Mistress is most displeased with your slow response to her summons!". But that is because in-character, Ceera has BEEN a queen, and even worshipped as a lesser Goddess, and because some people choose to adopt a submissive or subordinate role to her. So the "royal prerogatives" in terms of speech are appropriate when she is in the right settings.
Here in the forums, I'll use third person, because the in-character incarnation of Ceera would not know these forums exist, nor would she be active here. So here, I am talking as Ceera's Player, or the RL person who directs her actions.

What Immy said. "Naz" is more me than the person typing these words could ever be. I almost exclusively use first person, unless in a particular situation, like this, where I need to differentiate between the av and the person, or if I'm talking to someone about my av's appearance or something. Actually, I almost always use first then, too. How does my hair look?

I use first-person. Whatever I'm doing in-world as RockAndRoll Michigan, it's me doing it. It's always me doing it.
I will, however, talk about my alts as "him" because they're a different avatar. But that becomes equally true no matter what account I'm using. Such as if I'm logged in as Rock, Rock is "me" and Yngwie is "him." But if I'm logged in as Yngwie, then Yngwie is "me" and Rock is "him."

From: Pete Olihenge We are not amused. I am. And so is Aes. Inworld I am me being Aes. So then I say I (mostly). We're both "I" in some sense but although I get to be in her world, she doesn't get to be me in my RL. When I'm Aes in the forums I'm actually being my RL me (mostly). Or something. It's complicated being two of me. -- Aes.

It varies.
I use two main accounts (Kara and Cait), Kara is the mother of Cait. Whichever one I am using is first person, and the other is 3rd person.
Now where it *really* gets sematically interesting is when I have both logged in at the same time at the same place (or talking to people that know both).

I use the third person when I am referring to alts. Otherwise it could get quite confusing.
I joined in March of 2007, and then again in July of 2007, switching from myself to myself. Mostly because I was tired of being myself because of various baggage issues associated with stuff that happened as I was myself. I've had art up as both myself and myself.
I don't recall when, but there was some brief period of time that I came into the world as a third myself who tested how SL would be different if I was in a different myself. Where I would assume the role and position of male. Then I killed myself after a long period of time when I didn't log in. As myself, though I still logged in as myself. Oh, and that first myself occasionally logs in even today, while I'm still logging in as myself. Most of the time, though, I log in as myself.
Also, somewhere along the way, I got into something of a feud with myself. That was after both myselves danced with each other at an alt party, but I do not think it is related. Though the dance was rather short and myself and, oddly enough also myself shuddered in horror and vowed to never again do that.
Relatively recently I have taken several photo sessions of myself and myself at animation stores so that I could see what the poses might look like.
Oh, and I like to refer to my avatar as George. Even though that is not my gender nor my avatars name. I like to hug myself and rub my head while calling myself "good George." Of course I am a large furry creature of snow at the time.

Usually we refer to ourselves in the first person plural. Or else by using suitable pronouns for an inanimate object ("It puts the lotion on its' skin or else it gets degaussed again" .

This one has shades of Bladerunner in it, but as Iyoba I use first person for conducting ordinary business ("I was just at that sim and I fell through the dock. Stupid soft spot!" . I use third person sometimes when Iyoba's reactions and attitudes differ from mine because Iyoba is an avie and an avie is not quite human. For example, Iyoba loves water and rain. Second Life is effectively a desert and if there is a fountain or rain, Iyoba is under it. I also use third person to detail Iyoba's relationship with me She calls me "stupid!" as in "Stupid, you're going to make me jump off that building, aren't you?" Then there is the first person plural. Avie and creator share emotions and sensations and perceptions. That's we territory. When I have a cold, Iyoba sneezes. When Iyoba wears a shortsleeve shirt and sandals and stands in the snow, we both shiver. At a particularly well made oceanside build, we both smell salt air though I find that smell far more interesting than Iyoba does. Water in Second Life is usually salty or brackish. Fresh water is the exception for Iyoba.

I know you said you aren't interested in how we refer to ourselves in the Forum but I do find it interesting that here I often refer to 'Treasure', but inworld it's always 'me'. I don't know why, exactly it seems to not matter much here, but matters inworld. Yesterday in a forum thread I said something about Treasure always puts on jammies and goes to bed at night before *I* log off. Interesting insight there, lol.
