I'm thinking if i should buy a piece of homestead for myself before the july tiers raise, but haven't decided yet cos i don't know what i should do with it, haha....

Do you own land, and what do you mainly use it for?

My answer to that changes regularly.

I guess "build" and "script" is the common theme, but I've built and scripted very different environments on the same parcels over time. And depending on my mood, whatever I built may end up being a shop to sell other stuff I built, a club-like social gathering place, my "home" (a more private gathering place, I guess), a "garden" for grid wanderers, or a tutorial display.

It's a bit like "what would you do with your webpage?"

I was thinking of dividing it up and using a part of it as my home, and other parts to rent to others, seems like alot of ppl prefer to rent smaller parcels in SL.

I think the appropriate answer would be "Go For It!". Experiment, be goofy. It's your land, have a ball with it. Kind of like silly putty; bend it, stretch it, try to make it bounce.

I forgot about that. :o I do that, too.

One good thing about having a whole sim under your control is that you can define the maturity rating of the sim to correspond to whatever whim you have at the moment. That's a big advantage over buying a parcel on a sim that is set to "Mature" (for example), if you should suddenly develop an interest in distributing something LL at that time defines as "Adult".

I built vertically. Up top is my giant cookie jar where I run my store of glasses, doll keys, and other accessories. (^_^)

Through my secret entrance I can get down to my basement build where I have a small decorated living room, changing/photography room, and at the far bottom I have my underground skinny-dipping pond. (^_^)y

I have a little over a quarter of a sim, all carefully landscaped and terraformed, with a private beach for swimming and playing, and a dock with a diving board on one end. The terrain climbs into two levels of plateaus overlooking the beach, and is framed by a mountain ridge.

My home is a castle on the hillside, and serves as home point for a dozen or so friends.

Two of my friends have modest homes down on the beach. Another pair of friends have a home in a secluded valley in the mountains. Several others live in skyboxes that I set up for them.

I have a skybox lounge for my extended household and guests to use, with a photo studio and avatar changing area at one end, and a social area with a dance ball at the other end.

Elsewhere in the sky I have a building platform where I work on new products.

Mine is a memorial to both my parents.....a gallery of my mothers paintings and the over all 'island' atmosphere is my dad. But I've had different parcels in the past and done different things and it's just fun to have your very own space to work with.....go for it~!!!

I just started building stuff, and stopped when I realized that I'd created a place that reminded me of Nelson's Point in Sydney. It doesn't actually LOOK like it, but that's the feeling I get.

I have a skybox for my group to change/hang out in, and a building platform for the obvious reason.

The space on the ground is meant to be open to the public and changes depending on my whim. Frequently if I have a plan in mind, I just can't seem to make it happen. My best results have come from "Hey, let's throw down all the Halloween/alien garden/snow & winter/whatever theme stuff in my inventory and see how it all shakes out..."

I call it my playground, and that's pretty much what it is. There's a link to the ground level in my profile, and anyone is welcome to drop in any time. Not much to see there currently - I took it up to try something that didn't work and can't seem to get it back the way I want it. I am no terraforming wiz!

(It's nowhere near a whole sim, just a little mainland 4096. It seems so big to me, and yet I know it's relatively small potatoes.)

On my personal land, which is 8192 meters on the estate and 1536 on mainland, I just keep it beautiful, and one small parcel I just have a few trees on, keep that one for prims. I also have a private beach area, along with my treehouse and landscaping, just something that's mine. Seems to be important to me, and I remember well the days I rezzed every day at A-Lady Island changing rooms, because I had no home. :( I don't spend a lot of time inside my treehouse, use it to change clothes mostly, but I've had big 3 story mansions and for now, I'd rather have the free prims than the big house. Sometimes less is more.

On the sim itself, I"ve recently added a 'Changing Room in the Sky' which is public to the Virtual Ability group, for anyone homeless who needs a bit of (an illusion) of privacy to change clothes; all of my residents have skybuilds of some kind. We also have an enormous art gallery where we exhibit 4 artists at a time (really it's so big) and a smaller art gallery owned by a resident; also a Service Center with information on SL and RL for deaf and disabled, and freebies and a discussion area which is like a big gazebo. A dancefloor (open, outside) and lots of trees and landscaping. It's a peaceful, beautiful sim.

My mainland, I just lucked up on being adjacent to a big resort type area called Tamar, on Whitesun. After extracting a promise from me that I wouldn't put up any ugly builds, the owner made my side of his wall transparant, so it looks like the whole resort is my front yard, very nice. If I can avoid ban lines along the way, it's about a one minute walk to the Hangout, too. :) I just have a house and landscaping and few small things like jacuzzi on it, it's a getaway.

My largest parcel is my store. I have 19,072 there. It's way more than I need right now, but the neighbors on each side of me put their parcels up for sale and I couldn't resist. For now I just put up a few palm trees so it wouldn't look completely barren.

I also have a 520. The land around me is hideous with junk, but I only use the the land for building platform so I created a garden on the ground. This sim really could use a garden.

Dunno yet.

One thing that's important to me, though, is to fit into any surrounding sim at least to the degree I'm a polite neighbor. I also like to try to keep things pretty. Won't catch me putting a giant glowy pink shoebox on ground level.

I also like to put little skybox up in the stars here and there to hide when I feel like it (as much as one can in SL). I like it up there in the stars, or under really blue water, I've found out.

On an ancillary topic - what would people like to see in SL? If I can't think of anything I will just wait and see, but ideas would be nice.

I had a house I built on my land for about a year, and then decided I was a little bored with it and created a garden / gallery instead. I have since re-rezzed my house temporarily and recreated most of the decor for the upcoming home tour.

Mostly now though I "live" in a very small cube where I can tweak my wardrobe or adjust avatar shapes. One parcel is for the gallery / garden and the other is for building.

Someday I hope to build an immersive alien world environment complete with alien flora and fauna and whatsadoozles for people to explore. Ideally I would change it up every 3 months or so -- sort of a 3D Galactic Geographic. I'm a long way from that though.

I would like to see a beautiful environment I can interact with without necessarily understanding it. Its only purpose would be for beauty. A 3D work of art maybe that is an environment.

Or - I've always wanted to see a recreation of a pueblo or Anasazi village.

But maybe that's been done.

I bought up all the little parcels I could in my sim and then re-landscaped the lot to maximise the available land and enhance the usage of the water. I then built a small seaside village from which I rent out cottages and further along and up the hill sits my own gothic mansion with my friends house next door. I then made space for a stonehenge replica, a big boat dock, added a mini golf course and a hangout/cafe treehouse. Later came the (sometimes) active volcano. My land has access to many Linden water sims too.

All in all it is designed to maximise the enjoyment of the land and water by everyone.

I have 12000+ sq. meters on a lovely, quiet Linden protected waterway. My home is beachfront, rather large, and the land is heavily landscaped with a small lagoon area as well. There is a skybox too, which changes frequently since I get bored with those. Currently, it houses my photosphere on the rooftop - it was the only place I was able to fit it although I don't use it very often.

Additionally, a portion of the land on the ground, was donated to a group which is Ghosty's private art gallery.

All in all, it's my home away from home; private, secluded and very few visitors unless a party is being held. I keep toying with the idea of taking up the house permanently and only living in the skybox (if I can find one with enough wallspace for all of the artwork I've collected) so that I could use the entire ground level as a beach and donate more land to Ghosty's gallery. Still haven't made up my mind about that.
