I do not like some of the decisions Linden Labs make and have been more then vocal when I am in disagreement. But as individuals, Lindens do care and do try. Hats off to Rob and the dev team, Kelly works his butt off and the QA team go to unbelievable lengths trying to straighten up the mess they are handed at times. Milo, Vektor, Beast & Dan and other QA team members I have caught on the web still trying to trace down problems at 2 or 3 AM. Unpaid hours I should add. People come in on their weekends off trying to get the grid up and running again. This seems to be the norm for start up companies and software developers but how many of us are that dedicated to our RL professions?

Yes SL does still suck and the Asset systems just can't seem to hop over this latest concurrency high mark. The Forums are left to rot and treated like a bastard step child but none of this is because of the lack of effort of the individual Lindens.

OK ok ok. Let me illustrate the problem to you.

As far as 'fixing things in SL and Linden's Don't seem to care because they never fix it' go. What you have to realise is that Second Life is - and always has been - at the mercy of the Investors. It's the investors who stump up the big time bucks for, say, new servers, or new software that costs lots of $$$'s.
---Now. Investors - unlike you and me - are not normal human beings. They don't care about stuff except how many zero's they can put at the end of a 1, or a 2, and so on. They see SL as an investment and only an investment and, while that investment is making money, they wont commit any cash to fixing problems which aren't losing them money. This is because the investors have NEVER spent enough time in-world to know SL's problems.
---You might argue that Mitch Kapur (sp?) comes in-world, but that's only when he's doing something that makes him look good and I very much doubt he has an alt that hangs out with us all.

THIS frustrates SO MANY Lindens. Because they do want to fix the problems, but some of them simply require an amount of cash that the investors need to free up to fix the problems for good. So the Lindens, in their frustration, have to make workarounds to try and keep SL hopping along.
---It doesn't always work and sometimes goes very wrong, but it IS the best that they can do under the circumstances. Of course, M Linden would never admit that SL is at the Mercy of its Investors, he would likely say that its we residents on Premium accounts and we residents who pay tiers that keep SL going. But quick arithmetic would show this is not the case.

So. The investors look at how much SL is making and think. 'Nah, its not broke'. And close their wallets. I bet if we all stopped spending and downgraded our accounts for just a week, it would soon make them take notice, though.

EDIT: M Linden is just a PR pretty face. He doesn't care.

I think Torley cares about the residents, but it's a "I'm a rock star and here's some more watermellony goodness in the form of a video or some art" kind of caring. His aim is the overall experience; I'm not sure about the resident-by-resident thing.

I've had the pleasure of meeting Colton Linden at HIP. Very nice guy, showed me his Colton hand-puppet avatar. I also know he hangs at HIP in non-Linden form from tie to time. So I'd say he may be one who cares. (I'd post his picture, but I was on my female alt and ... well, you know ...)

Teagen Linden came to my house and removed some clutter from ajoining land that irritated me no end. We had a few words and I complimented her on her green flying avatar. I don't know if she cares, but if she doesn't, she hides it well. :)

Michael Linden was also very cool. Elora and I bumped into him when his animal avatar was behaving not-very-animal like. He was friendly and had no problem hanging out for a few to yak. I get the impression he cares.

And, I've met a couple of other Lindens on even briefer occasions. I think they all care, to differing degrees and in different modes. LL is a "job" for these folks (although I'm not convinced Torley wouldn't do it for free).

I havent thought of this before I read this post but I can think of all sorts of reasons why Lindens should not be allowed to use non-linden alts and even more reasons why they should not be allowed to have any special relationships with non-linden avatars which I think happens as well.

I would agree with this.

I don't know how much he cares, but I thought Cogsworth Linden was pretty cool as a wyrmling in his jazzed up steampunk vehicle.

/me raises my hand, however as I have just been told we are probably going to be made redundant now isn't the time to draw comparison!

Here are the Lindens I've had good dealings with:

Maggie Linden, Prospero Linden, Periapse Linden, Vektor Linden, Spike Linden, Soft Linden, Kelly Linden, Qarl Linden, Ramzi Linden, Sidewinder Linden (RIP), Zee Linden

The others I can not vouch for. However, that doesn't mean they are not also great people. I just have no personal reference which I can use to make that judgement.
