I don't know much about vehicles, so maybe someone can enlighten me:

What is the difference between phys and non-phys vehicles, and what are the advantages of one over the other?

from my experiance physical vehicles look and run alot smoother, but are limited to only 32 prims. where as none physical vehicles can be almost as many prims as you like and the parts can move using a script (multimove is the most widely used) problem is the movements are slow and erratic and not very realistic.

well, and if i understand multimove correctly, it's not a good idea to fly two multimove ships in close proximity, or one will absorb the other. (unless there is a way to script a channel or something into it, which i'm not experienced enough with scripting or multimove to really know.)

A Pretty Cool Place

Privateer Space is a pretty cool sim - I kinda wish someone would learn to speel ofer their tho ;p

Actually, I have a couple of concerns with it:

1. It pushes the concept of space travel per se too far into SL; you can't really extrapolate it much beyond the borders of the sim.

2. The prejuidice against non-physical vehicles. Properly scripted non-physical vehicles are not lag inducers, and can be employed with far larger, far more long-ranged vehicles. This breaks the community out of the limits of a single sim, which takes the RP to the community instead of insisting that the community come to the RP (see concern #1).

That being said, it is really cool for what it is - the artwork, builds and textures are awesome :)

I think it's bonus too that they have free vehicles - when I take some time off to hang out and goof off, you can expect to see me around there for some lighthearted fun.

I have to question the choice of the PG rating though, given the presence of representations of sex, tobacco, and alcohol. Not a complaint about content as much as an observation about the rating.

Four out of Five Stars Guys :)

Bravo :)

Concerning the original topic of the thread, there are many places the errant VR Nomad can count for cruising - I home out of a 1024m rental parcel in Soye and travel between there and Rogue's Paradise in Shinjung, both on one of the same class 5 mainland continents. Rogue's Paradise seems to encourage such things, having many free prims and a 0 min return policy. My inquiries to the owners about it's proper usage have fallen on deaf ears, so one can only assume....
....on the south continent of the old mainland there is always the full sim sandboxes as potential layover regions, not to mention Abbott's and the vehicle testing sims just adjacent.

Unfortunately I have found the old class 4 mainland to be pretty much untennable as a cruising ground for anything except (water) boats :( thus my present parcel at Soye.

I have a group in SL called VR Nomads, no charge to join - it's pretty empty now, hop in if you have an open group and we can form up as a community of such and swap sources for LZs, ships, RP opportunities, etc :)

Cheers

I suspect part of the reasoning is due to the way the asteroids and such work vessus ships in Privateer, as well as the preferred combat system in same.

I don't think SL has a prohibition on alcohol or tobacco in PG areas. Anything "sexual" there is pretty tame by comparison to most of SL.

I just put this crazy ship up for sale on SL Exchange that is specifically tailored to support the nomadic virtual lifestyle:

There's a good many images, have a look :D

Are there still any places out there to have fun in your space ships? Privateer Space is closing down, I can't find Starbase Alpha, the one location I have I can't teleport to, and I haven't been able to find anywhere else that might do.

Well, [expletive]. Privateer Space was a place I was going to get around to seeing some day. I guess if you snooze you loose. The longer I stay a resident, the more of this I see. Things disappear. Similar things come along to replace them, but often without the special magic of their predecessors. It's a bit depressing.

I once tried the idea of building a huge 4096m parcel box around your ship and I made six detailed starscape textures to put on the inside (at full bright otherwise it looked dull) one for each inside face of the box. I was going to have the starscapes slowly scroll on the sides to give the illusion of movement, but stopped when I realized it wouldn't work well in the front or back.

Anyway, the textures look pretty cool I think, having used a fractal plug-in to get the nebulae. Anyone wanting them please IM me. Maybe you can make the idea work -- using a sphere instead?

[Edit: Though I will not be in world much today, Saturday.]

A nice, space themed flying sim would be nice indeed. There's lots of places to fly your WW2 planes in it but the only place I know to fly spacecraft is Starbase Alpha and thats pretty ugly.

BSG47 is extremely nice to fly in but you need to be a member and take part in the RP and you can not fly your own craft.

Ah well - if someone provides the sim, I'd build one.

Try using a 4-sided pyramid at each end ;)

Or just turn the box diagonally (for this was not a megaprim). Brilliant! Maybe I'll move that idea off the back burner. Thanks.

We need a new non-RP sci-fi region, since PS was lost:(
There where only a few people who tried to save it for this reason, and we were just blown off:mad:

I have not been able to mess with most of my spacecraft since the closing and be able to test any new ones I would like to build:(

For now most of my ships are packed up in crates to lower inventory counts, but I hope to be able to use them again some day, if any one can find a new non-RP full immersive sci-fi region that isn't a mall, please post it here. All of us looking for places like that will gladly apreciate it!!

Ships, plural. Go to Honest Zorg's on the level below the asteroid level, an stock up.

AFAIK, Privateer Space sim is gone. One of the long roll call of closed sims.

Maybe someone can start a group to try and pool enough money for a new sim.

@Alzarin: Yes Privateer Space is long gone, and it was over some mysterious issue Alley had with SL, but nothing to do with the homestead pricing, or adult content issues. And while physical flying vehicles were welcome, large nophys ships were not.

Starbase Alpha is stil renting space for large ships, according to number of prims, as I understand it.

I own three of the big ALcyon cruisers and they are superb.... the only problem is they devour prims.... the best bet is to own land immediately adjacent to linden areas so that you have sufficient prim allowance to rez the vehicles and then fly them over the linden areas...

For those big ships you definately need a navigator at least :D

Personally I dont see why Lindens can't open a vast air- space arena for aviators and astronauts....

We can get a continent when the Lindens want to try and sweep the stuff they dont like under the carpet...but not for something a lot of residents would actually enjoy....

I am visiting there now. How do you get permission to rez a space ship? Got mine from Privateer Space in a dusty old inventory folder.

I randomly flew around, flapping my arms, giddy with excitement at the neat space stuff. Many of the large items have stuff hidden in them. Somewhere along the way I noticed I was in a build enabled area and so rezzed my spaceship. It is land near, but technically not part of Inspire Space park.

Very fun. Unfortunately not easy to see borders up there and I ended up slamming hard into a ban line.

Can't you use the Blake Sea area for this (it is for ships!) and just turn midnight on?

Uh. . .the Blake sims always seem to be hosting some sort of race or other. It's difficult to sail in peace, or even just watch the races.

As Maelstrom suggested, flying over the Linden lakes is your best bet.

I just know I'm going to hate myself for saying this, but my beach on Owasco typically has enough prims available for even the largest of the big ships. You can rezz there. Just don't leave them laying around.

Looks like they'll be enforcing the ban in PG on alcohol at least, as well as anything sexual (they've kind of reneged on the 'sex bed is OK as long as it's not actually used' line), once the adult continent comes onstream :(

Thanks for starting this thread, Milla - I totally love my Steampunk Dreamliner, but until now have mostly only taken it over Linden water and roads for all the reasons already mentioned. I'm going to check out some of the links here as soon as possible!

the Lindens can seemingly open continents as and when they like, why - rather than cramming everyone with a different enthusiasm into one area - try not actually encourage them to open more 'themed areas'.....

Im sure a sci fi 'themed' continent would come pretty high in the popualrity stakes... as far as Im concenred the sci fi builds have been among the most spectacular and well made in SL.
