Ok....here's a real question!
For a while now I've been absolutely floored and fascinated with the spaceships available in SL. For the life of me I cannot think of the vender.....but I'm referring to the one's that includes the Wolf, Vaith, and just released the Firefly ship. These ships are just phenominal in terms of design and I'm toying with getting one. But....what concerns me is they are prim hogs and where the heck do you actually use the thing? I understand they can indeed fly and in some cases cross sims.....but with prims like that....how can anyone really own and operate one without getting bounced at every turn. And...suppose you want one as your home.... you'd need a huge expanse of land just to hold the prims..... and you could not set home on the ship unless it was actually parked over your land. So.... how does one successfully own and exist in one of these spaceships? I would absolutely love to get one....and if I have to....make adjustments on my own land to accomidate having one hovering above. But honestly....how else would you even be able to run one?
As an aside.....(and I'm dreaming here) I would LOVE to be able to afford a cluster of sims and create a space port just to house these ships and their crew. I think it would be an absolute blast to have a huge area dedicated to space living only. But, either I win the lottery or find a way to grow a money tree cause it aint gonna happen any time soon on my dime. LOL

I would love for you to do that too. I'd buy a modest ship just to rent there. I toyed with the idea of using a ship instead of building a skybox, but as you say, they are prim monsters.
I did not know that the bigger ships actually fly. For me, I'd be looking for one that isn't based on a TV show, but has a unique design. That's just my preference.
Guess I didn't answer your question, but wanted to acknowledge your cool ideas.

Check out the Nightshade by Carrah Rossini. You can live in it (even has a naughty bed) and fly it as well. Has tv, radio and security system. It also looks great and is not too expensive. It turns into an attachment when you move it, but it will allow quite a few to go along with you for the ride.
Around 117 prims as I recall, but you probably want a 1024 minimum parcel due to it's size.
Oh yeah, almost forgot that it has a hanger where you can rez a little interceptor ship that you can launch and fly around in as well. it will auto dock with the mother ship if you are in the same sim.
Shameless plug I guess, but it is so much fun (my neighbor has one) that i am thinking of buying one. BTW, she also sells steampunk airships that have similiar capabilities for those that want something a little different.

My vote goes for Privateer Space too! They even have a freebie ship you can get. Looking ahead, once havoc4 is all deployed maybe we can make 'outerspace' just about anywhere - go up to 4000m and force night-time -Atashi

The best place has to be Starbase Alpha You can rent there to keep your ships airborne and not returned, there is a mall, fcrs roleplay (optional) , two decks to take off from, and many docking bays, there is also a group called Starcomm, in which avatars have to IM and ask for permission to takeoff.

Hmmm...
Ok. lol
Weston...the place I was looking has totally unique ships....they just happened to put out a Firefly ship recently. They are huge and fully livable.....some even have room rezzers so you can choose between 7 different room scenes, or an empty room (to save prims). I've got get the name on here when I get back in world......but these ships are just not to be believed!
Anyway....I'm thinking since I own land, my best option would be to just clear one parcel and rez the ship over head. I don't want to fly it necessarily....I just want one cause they are uber cool. lol

If you want to fly spaceships see .. http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/ (free download ) I got to the moon twice .. but did'nt have enough fuel to stop into orbit let alone return to earth. Wanna fly Planks or helicopters .. see here .. http://www.microsoft.com/games/pc/flightsimulatorx.aspx ( not free ) As close to the real thing as you can get outside a $10.000.000 simulator.

P.S.
If you wanna try this in SL I wish you the very best of luck .. ( and may what ever deity you worship fly with you).
The above mentioned posts dont have "sim crossing" failures.. neither do you have to worry about your prim hair ..
Pie anyone ?

I visited privateer space. Got my little bug outfitted from zorg's with the tcs. promptly got shot down.
Wha's the difference between tcs and ccc? Is ccc allowed in privateer space?

Cheesecske ? TCS does no actual damage. It's sensors only. That much I know.

I don't know what's allowed and what isn't, but what I am told is TCS is still actively being developed and improved, but CCC is not. Both work the same way though, with sensors rather than primmy bullets. -Atashi

OK .. any "active" probing with scripts etc can be seen as interrogation of certain sensors ..
their reaction depends on the settings of said "scripts".
Enter at your risk.
popcorn now ?

don't be at home to answer the door. As a combat veteran and a woman involved in law enforcement, I have been on the receiving end of bad intentions once or twice. In any event, what does any of this have to do with this thread. No one is planning on flying over to your land in their space ship. As a matter of fact I doubt whether any one really cares where that might be. (I suspect it is under a bridge after seeing your many posts in other threads). End of Jannae taking the troll bait.

Hey! I love living in a flying house. I am one of those people who just likes having it and doesn't get into all the crazy RP-combat system-all your base are belong to us kind of stuff. I go for more whimsical and steampunky things. Right now, I am building a flying pirate ship with a giant hot air balloon that holds it up, for example. I'm also hacking one of Carrah Rossini's ships... she makes BEAUTIFUL ships, and I can't say enough good things about her.
You will giggle, but the place I take mine the most is up Linden roads! I know it sounds silly, but I know I can be there, I like the challenge of flying between the buildings and nobody shoots at me while I'm out for a pleasure cruise. The thing about it, though, is that sometimes you will crash your ship or lose bits of it, and you can't rez it again on Linden roads, so you have to sometimes walk a bit until you find a parcel where you can rez it and get it back on the road. Remember to be polite about this and don't rez your ship in someone's store or something crazy like that.
The best thing about cruising up a Linden road in a giant ship, though, is how many people you meet. The mods I am doing to my ship right now are specifically to make it a little flying party ship with room for plenty.
The other thing to know is that less prims is better. I have had ships that were about 1500 prims before that flew just fine, but the trouble with them is that if you attempt to enter a full parcel or sim, they will get returned to you. If your ship is smaller, there is less chance you will use up the remaining prims in that area. Plus, it just goes better.
If you want to live in the ship and also fly it sometimes, you might want to add your own furniture or personal stuff. The important thing to know about this is that you MUST use copy/mod items and be careful about how you link them. (Link THEM to the ship, not the other way around, usually.) If the items are not mod, they will not link to the ship, and if they are not copy, you cannot keep a backup to rez in case you break it going over sim crossings and whatnot. I find that looking on SLX is the easiest way to locate stuff with specific perms, and don't forget that a lot of clothing items are copy.mod. (I just ripped a telescope off a belt and stuck it to my dashboard, for instance.)
Hope that helps!!

just a self plug really, but i'm slowly working on a floating steampunk city called Laputa on the spidermouse sim (i keep forgetting to add the SLurl to my forum tags. but it's in my profile and will come up with a search for "Laputa" . it's on a qtr sim and i have quite a bit of pier space for people to park there flying machines. even started working on building one myself. because of griefers i'v unfortunatly had to turn build off but just click one of the signs there and i can add you to the group so you can rez your ships. I'v not tested myself to see how far you can get without hitting banlines but i'm in negotiations at the moment to move to a private group of islands with open spaces and no ban lines. just to plug it a bit more there are also shops, a bar, a working library and also a brewery and clocktower to explore -Crunch

Privateer Space has one rule
04-22-2008 07:53
From: Marianne McCann No better place to fly a space ship than Privateer Space. 2000m of space fun Mari If you plan to use ships in Privateer Space, THEY MUST BE PHYS SCRIPTED/ENABLED OR GET YOUR SHIP DELETED OUT FROM UNDER YOU AND POSSIBLY BANNED!! Aley hates non-phys vehicles, if you don't have any phys vehicle scripts, you can reverse engineer them out of her open source Space Bug, they work great I used them on my hover boards. Other than that Privateer Space is a fun region to explore and test flying vehicles.
