Roving Lighthouse Light Neighbour Problem

We (Alyx and me) have a new neighbour. He's built a huge lighthouse. So far, so good. That lighthouse emits a revolving, roving beam that causes the textures on our buildings to flicker and even gets into our houses. Not nice.

So I fly over to the guy and ask him whether he really needs that beam. He asks me what the problem is. I tell him our textures are flickering. He kindly informs me that there are worse things in SL and that he likes it. Having said that, he leaves me hanging in the air.

I follow and point out that the light gets into the houses.

Next thing I know, I'm banned from the parcel.

There goes the communication approach, obviously.

Any helpful ideas?

report the beam, or arrange a land trade with an add farmer(get the last laugh or something).

There are some ad parcels right next to that guy, he isn't bothered.
He even put the bloody lighthouse on a large base to make it even higher. The light is visible everywhere in the sim and *everything* flickers.

Is it a prim beam?

Haven't used them, but there is an option for muting objects, and another for muting particles (which I suppose the lighthouse beam is).

Yep. It's a separate object with 4 prims.

Muting objects just mutes IMs and chat, I've tried that...I'm not in world right now, but it didn't look like particles, more like a half-transparent cone. I'm just so annoyed by the light it emanates. I don't mind lights at all, but that things must have the equivalent of a million watts or something, and because it moves, everythin flickers...

Have you tried turning off 'object entry' in your about land -> options area? That might prevent the prims from entering your property...

Yes, that's off on both our parcels.

P.S.: What category heading do I file that AR under? "Parcel"?

...and I just checked that person's profile and he says he's a psychologist....if he is like that to his patients, well thank you very much.

I'm not one to AR everything and everyone, not at all. I like to talk to people to get any probems out of the way. But someone that you ask nicely promptly kicks you from his parcel???

Ah, well - first AR after half a year of SL. Is that good or bad as far as AR averages go?

expect at least 10 to 15 days till your A/R is read, then its the luck of the draw if any action is taken. IM'ing every linden in the people search with the location slurl and the words 'please help parcel encroachment' works alot quicker

If the person fails to be reasonable ( and as you have aproached him fairly ) File an abuse report .. try if you can to right click the prim beam .. more/more untill you arrive at "Report Abuse" .. the AR will already be partially filled .. complete with screenshot .. fill in the details ..( drop down / Harrasment etc ) .. give a short description e.i. "Parcel Encroachment" .. and repeat.
Good luck.

Sounds like it is an LSL lighting effect, and if so that goes through everything including walls. Used to be a casino beside -- now I own that land :^) -- that had a spinning sign with that light effect flashing on and off. It was extremely annoying, and it can affect a very large area.

I don't get how it causes your textures to flicker. If this is a result of lighting, I believe there is a parcel control for this. If the beam physically encroaches your land, put a barrier there to show him where it encroaches, and leave him a polite note requesting he shrink it or whatever. If he does not, report it as abuse.

it's more likely a cylinder .. squeezed at one end to form a cone .. made partially transparent then made "light" .. these can be a real PITB .. if denying "object entry" fails .. See my last post.

the texture flickering is cuz his 'prim' is passing thru the other persons 'prim' and his 'prim' contains alpha in the texture.

It does the moment you have ticked "local lights". It goes away when I switch back to "sun and moon only", but then so do all other local lights.

@ Poopmaster .. Alphasort bug is not to do with SL .. it's a known prob with any OpenGL application .. I doubt theres anyting LL can do.

Prim encroachment however is AR,ble.

...you can scrap the polite note thing...we tried being polite about it already, and the light flashes over most of the sim...being polite just made that guy eject us from his parcel.

Problem is the prim itself doesn't encroach, but the light effect does, and it's more than a PITB-I bet it causes epilepsy even if you stay inside my house long enough. It certainly is extremely distracting.

Actually, the few ARs I've filed were fixed within 2-3 days. My understanding is that for the first AR, LL just gives the person a warning and asks them to remove the offending item. If you have a cooperative person, they do it, and all is well. But if they don't, it will just sit there until you send another AR.

I would suggest that both of you submit ARs, and that you do so again every week until it is resolved... AND try to get Lindens inworld too. :)

One thing you might try is to make use of the 6-light limit: Each viewer can only see the light from 6 local lights plus the sun and the moon.

In general you will the lights that are closest to you (I believe to your av, rather than your camera). I think distance is based on the prim center, which is where the light emanates from.

The theory is that you should be able to set up lights of your own that cancel out his light. But the more I think about your flickering problem that you only see when local lights is on, it kind of sounds like his is doing that to yours. Still, it's worth a try.
