Even for my beloved that I know as RL as one can over the Internet; I built an SL home for ... and got an AV that they have a crush on ...
Anyway, point is that if you know them, there is probably something in SL that you can do for them and won't be crossing any lines. |

One option is a MC prepaid gift card
12-10-2009 23:25
http://www.mastercard.com/us/personal/en/aboutourcards/prepaid/faqs.html#q12
When you get the card, scan it and send them the info, so they have the card number and code on the back, thats all you need to shop online, possibly the phone number to activate the card. The simplest option is to just send them some L$ and a notecard, if they want to use it for something real life, they can cash it out of SL via paypal. You can shortcut this by sending them money via paypal directly, which many merchants will accept for payment, though they would have to tell you where to send it in that case. |

If your close enough to want to send something in RL then are they close enough to trust you with RL info like an address.
I was close to someone in here and we did exchange items by RL mail but that came after some time> If they are not wanting to give that info then leave it to SL gifts _____________________

I'd like to send someone that I only know by their SL Av a RL gift certificate or something. Absent skulduggery, it's not possible unless you IM and ask them their RL address, which could be awkward. However, LL could presumably set up a service someday to do this as an intermediary if they had your valid address info on file. For instance, they could set up partnerships with 1-800-FLOWERS to arrange deliveries with the prior consent of the intended recipients. They could also do this for more general items (partner with Amazon, for instance), but that might open up tricky issues of merchandise being used as payment for, uh, certain in-world activities, whereas flowers have the useful property of having no resale value. _____________________

whereas flowers have the useful property of having no resale value. are you kidding? they send potted ones these days, and I don't think opening a local resale nursery is that unfeasible (especially if you tell them what to buy ![]() _____________________

Thanks everyone. Sort of what I thought. Part of the fun of SL for me is the mystery about who these people really are. I don't want their RL names, email or mailing addr.
There maybe an opportunity here for SL to provide online AV to AV gift card ordering to be sent to an AV's RL email addr. I'd use it to send flowers, coffee, chocolates etc. |

There is a company doing that already a few years in SL.
You buy a SL gift inworld (flowers, chocolats, juwelry, ...) with your L$. You give this gift to the avatar in SL. When that avatar opens it they get a login code to a website where they can enter their RL information. The origional gift will then be delivered to that address. Since the person who receives the gift has to enter his/her RL address on the website the person who has given the gift never knows your RL info. Do a search for STARFRUIT inworld. _____________________

Now, THAT is a cool way to do it. The recipient has to say, "yes, send me the loot".
If LL offered it as an intermediary, I just know what would happen. Johnny Avatar sends his SL love Susie a box of chocolates, and a loving note. LL processes the order. A few days later, Susie Avatar's operator is faced with the following situation: Betty's husband: "Hey, Betty...who's this "Johnny" guy who's sending you candy and love notes? I think you have some 'splainin' to do..." _____________________

You may want to stop and think, would this person appreciate being sent a RL present out of the blue from someone in SL. It would creep some people out, myself included.

If they like to shop on Amazon, it is pretty easy. Just get a Amazon gift certifiate - emailed to you. Then IM them the Certificate number in world. Boom. They get the amount of the certificate, and neither side has lost any privacy ^_^

These people are in Switzerland which doesn't help a whole lot in North America. Also, they do have both an SL shop and a RL web presence but seem to be out of business. |
