From: someone Because its name is "Release Candidate", the purpose of its existence is not to give you a better experience but to give you the opportunity to test the client before it being the current one and to do so, you must use it. But it's nice to be able to see the improvements, even if it has bugs. Making an RC that has no improvements but has bugs would be pointless!

When a company sends out a Release Candidate, they're saying: From: someone This is what we think works so far. We haven't completely tested it yet. Please try it out and let us know what works for you. Use of it is completely voluntary and for debug purposes only. We will not be responsible for any damages, lost data, ruined content, or microwaved kittens as a result of using this program. (^_^)y

From: Imnotgoing Sideways The RC is buggy by design, regardless of the version. (^_^) That's the whole point of the RC process. A Release >>Candidate<< is an pre-release version of a product that users are allowed to utilize and report the bugs on prior to it being the next standard client. It should be used for testing, new feature verification, and pre-release bug reporting only. Embracing an RC as your every day client is a foolish venture, indeed. (^_^)y /me is also foolish. *wink* I've been using the RC viewer for 9 months now as my main viewer, with zero problems, always upgrading when asked. I originally switched because of all the corrupt texture and attached prims dissapearing when I was sitting. As cute as I think I am bald, I still like my hair!

From: Qie Niangao The alpha-masking that's coming is *much* better than either of the preceding avatar-hiding hacks. They actually rushed to get in the change than breaks the complexity hack before any more content was made based on it; it's said to be totally unsupportable. (I get the impression that the invisiprim hack continues to be a pain to keep working, too, but they know that tons of stuff depends on that because it's been around for years.) Here's a shot from Nyx's office hour yesterday, showing an avatar with alpha-masking: Wasn't speaking of invisiprims. speaking of the giant megaprims you wear that render the AV invisible. Much better looking then the old invisiprim hacks that cause shaders behind not to render. Fly near water and your AV looks stupid with the invisiprims sticking out due to the water behind not rendering. However, if all we have to do in the future is wear alpha skins.... that would be great.

So does one of these mean everyones avatar mesh in a 4 sim radius is also affected? 3 or 4 people walking around in a sim would have to screw something up I suspect. Sounds like an insane hack to me, I've got a copy of that huge megaprim in my inventory, but never been crazy enough to rez it inworld. Another good reason to cap all prims to 256x256 serverside.

From: Tegg Bode So does one of these mean everyones avatar mesh in a 4 sim radius is also affected? No, of course not. It's never rezzed in-world, it's attached to the avatar, and only effects the attached avatar. From: someone 3 or 4 people walking around in a sim would have to screw something up I suspect. The only effect attached prims have on a sim is via the scripts in them. The sim doesn't even see the geometry. You can have an avatar with an ARC in 3 digits that lags everyone around them, and one with an ARC in 5 digits that has no effect whatsoever on even the slowest systems.

So if the prim doesn't rez, why couldn't a .01x.01x.01 prim be used instead and just placed in the body of the avatar. Or do the scripts shift the avatar to the top of the prim or something similar?

I downloaded the latest 1.23 RC last night. A bit better than the previous one - the black lipstick is gone as is the full length petticoat with skirts! The avatar shadow seems to persist for longer before breaking up. Not perfect yet, some way to go, but the effects are great.

From: Tegg Bode So if the prim doesn't rez, why couldn't a .01x.01x.01 prim be used instead and just placed in the body of the avatar. Because, to repeat, it's a hack where having a 65k megaprim attached to the avatar makes it not render. It's the presence of the megaprim that makes it work. It's not scripted at all.
