Been using RC Second Life 1.22.11 (113976) and it's been the best test viewer so far... just tried to login and now getting message I must upgrade to RC 1.23.1.119104 to login... already seeing complaints bowt this new RC viewer in the RC thread... why not optional ? wasn't last time they released it. I'm happy with my 1.22.11 (113976) RC version... eeks !!!

Why are you using RC 1.22.11.113976 instead of the released version 1.22.11.113941? What is the difference?

are they the same ? numbers are different at end and it means I have to download the viewer again if it is... and set it all up again with my preferences.

Yes, it's exactly the same version, the numbers at the end are just because they had to run the build again to make it identify itself as an RC.

And yeah, because RC builds keep some preferences in a separate file, you may have to redo some of your preference tweaks.

They're supposed to be the same. I figured if you were still using 1.22 RC11 you knew something I didn't. :)

Well it's a nRC I guess, try not to fear change, you can always use the standard viewer, you should have 2 seperate folders for SL, a standard viewer install and an RC install folder and a seperate start shortcut for each.

Ta!

What confused me was the numbers at the end... because the RC version I was using doesn't match the official release which shows an earlier number (bit confusing that for us testers who download RC's the numbers usually end up on the official)... Will just have to redownload the current viewer even tho it is the same as the RC I have been using and re-do all preferences... not gonna try the 1.23 RC yet still sounds a bit too buggy.

Thanks again ...

The RC is buggy by design, regardless of the version. (^_^)

That's the whole point of the RC process. A Release >>Candidate<< is an pre-release version of a product that users are allowed to utilize and report the bugs on prior to it being the next standard client. It should be used for testing, new feature verification, and pre-release bug reporting only. Embracing an RC as your every day client is a foolish venture, indeed. (^_^)y

Damn it! You realize how many avatars will be broken by this 1.23?!

I can no longer cloak my AV to wear my custom AV. Back to those ugly invisiprims I guess :(

The alpha-masking that's coming is *much* better than either of the preceding avatar-hiding hacks. They actually rushed to get in the change than breaks the complexity hack before any more content was made based on it; it's said to be totally unsupportable. (I get the impression that the invisiprim hack continues to be a pain to keep working, too, but they know that tons of stuff depends on that because it's been around for years.)

Here's a shot from Nyx's office hour yesterday, showing an avatar with alpha-masking:

Some RCs are better than others. 1.22 was reliable almost out of the starting gate. 1.23 is one of the worst ever.

Profont was ripped out and replaced by Deja Vu Sans.

RC 1.22.11.113976 was the RC when i downloaded it Immy and didn't realise the Lindens made it the official client thingy... that was the only client that worked proper for me and it was still categorised as RC in the loading screen but now I see it was actually the current viewer with different numbers at the end... I had to re-download the client thingy n redo all my settings again just to get it to work.

Version 1.22 is the standard viewer release on the main download page, you should install it into a folder like "SecondLife" and then when you install an RC which is currently Version 1.23.something you should install it in a folder called "SecondLife RC".
I also use the Save as option on the download rather than run it, this means you will have the zip file installer for every version as you replace them. I just then install it over the top of the previous RC, this may cause problems for some people but has never been a problem for me. Otherwise you can just use a new folder everytime like "SecondLifeRC1.23.1", "SecondLifeRC1.23.2" etc
It's always good to have 2 versions of SL when you install a new one, so if you can't login or experience weird stuff with the new version you can run the previous version or standard viewer to check if it really is the viewer or your computer/internet or LL's servers.
Overwriting a pervious version means you don't need to make new shortcuts or reset all your preferences, usually :)
The RC is the postbeta test version of the next major viewer upgrade it will probably uprade every couple of weeks a dozen times as they fix bugs reported by those using it. Where the Standard Viewer will be unchanged untill the RC is proven and bugfixed ready to replace it. And then you can still usually run the previous Standard viewer ok too, but by staying with the redundant viewer you may find new features that don't work for you ar aren't visible.
There is also a beta test version available sometimes for use on the beta grid and in certain testing groups full of programmer types for those who want to experience the latest fixes and probably bugs too :)

you can bypass 'forced upgrades' by using the channel switch in your shortcut, ie:
G:\SecondLife\1.22.11\secondlife.exe -channel "NINAS CLIENT" -multiple

In debug try FontSizeMonospace at around 6.5 or 7 or so, that looks roughly the same size as the old stuff. (This is one of the settings that needs a relog to kick in)

/me is foolish ;)

Seriously, I love living on the cutting edge and the RC's (even the current one) always give me better viewing then the official ones.

Same reason I can't use the Cool Viewer, feels like I'm stuck in early 2008. As much as I hated the current UI when it was forced on us, I've become comfortable with it and now can't stand the old style LOL

EDIT: I just tried the Rainbow Viewer version, very nice! But, I'm surprised that the current RC has higher FPS.

I also get that at 700 meters

never noticed it on the public nightly version I was using, but for some reason the RC does it

guess I will search and see if it is reported on the jira

other than that minor thing (which could very easily be related to my video card) I have no problem with the 1.23. I like it so far.

(taking a little getting used to the new pie menu for attachments and such, but nothing major)
I do like seeing names when hovering over people's dots on the mini map, that comes in handy

I only just downloaded the RC this morning, so haven't had time to run into some of the graphical glitches mentioned above, but I have to say, I do like some of the features of this RC (especially the new prim-contents bulk permissions changer.)

why not optional ?

Because its name is "Release Candidate", the purpose of its existence is not to give you a better experience but to give you the opportunity to test the client before it being the current one and to do so, you must use it. Sticking with an old build doesn't give any help to the debug process, for those that won't betatesting, the chose should be to use the current stable build, not a beta version.
