People barging into me and pushing me along with them

What is the best way to deal with this please. If I bang into someone, which I frequently do, being a newbie. I always say "sorry" and move asap.
Since being here, I have had loads of people walking straight into me and carrying on, dragging me along for the ride. I try to move, but can't. Usually, no apology either.
Don't say use the map, I don't want my time here to be spent avoiding people :D I just need to know how to stop being dragged along, please :)

Am really enjoying SL and meeting new folks, btw :)

sit on something. Even a simple plywood box will do.

You can get a "move lock" for pinning yourself to the spot in busy areas. You can pick up a free one from one of the stores at New Citizens Plaza. (Look it up in search.)

Alternatively, this functionality is featured in lots of useful devices like Mystitool and the proTEC shield, which if you don't fancy finding in world, you can always grab from slexchange.

In the mystitool they got an option called move block and even if someone continues to bump or move you they cannot LOL I love this feature!

Hi Sapphire,

first thing is make sure you are not standing on or right in front of a tp point. Sometimes, it can take a while for all the avies to rez properly when you tp into somewhere so it could be that they just can't see you. Also, complete newbies may not be all that good at controlling their avies yet, but I agree, a quick sorry costs nothing.

On the other hand, some people are just rude - you might do best just finding somewhere a little less crowded and more polite to hang out.

I left her to it

Hi spinster,
Oh. I've already experienced being in a tp zone, with about 10 people landing on my head. I move out of the way of those very swiftly now :D

Hi Isabeau

Thanks. Some very helpful suggestions for me to have a go at tonight. I guess SL is just like RL, with some rude folks about too :)

This happens all the time especially when you first arrive anywhere as this would be the rezzing point. It also happens away from this area but more so in rezzing areas.

When you arrive anywhere it's always good practice to use your mini map which many people don't. You'll see who is around and near you by doing this. To avoid this just fly straight up just enough to move to an area nearby which is clear of people.

Being pushed by those who have no common sense to wait 'til they're rezzed is annoying. You have to expect this as they have a lot of people in sl who either don't know any better or just don't care who they bump into or drag along.

It is no different. Mainly because everybody in SL is from RL too. :p However, do bear in mind that accident do happen, mainly because the environment loads at different speeds for different people (we all have different computer specs and broadband providers). It's very common at popular areas for everything to take minutes to load after somebody teleports-in, so it's quite common for somebody to not realise you're even there, let alone dragging you along with them. :)

Walker, could you tell me (computer newbie-not just to SL) how it is possible to see yourself inworld perfectly fine, i.e. just standing and of course dressed and have someone come up to you and tell you that you are dancing (in there eyes). Is it on my end or is it on theres? Also, I sometimes see people who are dressed in "Missing" clothes - if you know what I mean. Again, my computer or theres? Thanx...

Very good point! Mini-map is definitely a must if you're going to land in busy places.

it's missing on yours. they look fine to everyone else - usually.
Also your client may think an animation has ended, but everyone else still sees you dancing. These are both glitches in the communication between your local client and the grid.

The thing is, it's not usually when I or they land. I am just perusing something, minding my own business then someone comes along and I find myself being moved from pillar to post :D
Some great tips though, thanks all :)

LOL It happens.

The other thing to remember besides being in a tp drop zone...is not everyone's computer is rezzing things at the same speed....so often time times they don't see you.... even if you have been in that same place and see everything clearly... it's really not a big deal. I don't think people are trying to be rude.....it's more likely they are new and not used to controls....or they don't see you....or they have lag and the delay is showing them not moving....when in fact they have plowed thru a crowd of people.... It's all very 'normal' in SL and it's not worth the effort to take any of it seriously.
As you get more familiar with things and controlling your own AV....it will become less of an issue. I've been in for almost a year....and it still happens to me from time to time... If I bump, I apologise... if I'm bumped by someone...I don't even worry about it. LOL

It amazes me that people, (few) are so rude... I've been "pushed" while at sandboxes and that's no fun.. I see a lot of new people pushing, not understanding, as well as seasoned pro's.... Men won't usually push women, but I see women do it all the time to everyone!!

Keep saying sorry, just because they are rude doesn't mean you have to be.. I always say sorry!! I land on people a lot while TP.. the first thing I do whern TP Is hit FLY! Move up then rezz... it helps!

The best course of action is to laugh it off... Move on and live love & laugh with the nice people you meet along the way.. Also, I like to send friendly IM's to people, sometimes they don't know !!

Always give out what you expect to be returned! It usually works and I find Karma works in SL as it does in RL!

Wow! Thank you for the quick reply... Always wanted to know but was too shy to ask hehe. I guess you just have to rely on a kind stranger to tell you your AV is doing the chicken dance when you're wandering alone :))

LOL! As you said that, I see people with newbie clothes (white with text) I like to IM them and say rebake! or wow your shoe is in your butt!! Sometimes we dont know what we are doing on other peoples screens lol! My friend next door, (RL) is often on with me and she sees me in some strange positions or wearing the SL hair under my wig... It helps to send a "friendly" IM.... I appreciate this. but I've seen people laughing at others because of things like this.... "sigh"

A lot of pushing in crowded places is accidental. I'm not blameless in this myself. Lag causes it - you try to move 2 metres and 15 seconds later you find yourself moving 10 metres pushing someone as you go. I just issue blanket apologies!

Also in busy clubs, now that lots of avs take ages to appear in view at all, you could see yourself walking around an empty floor without realising that other people are seeing you as a grey Ruth bumping into everyone. Even the mini-map isn't a lot of help here as the scale is too small.

SL movement controls are pretty clunky. We've all bumped someone else occasionally.

The polite thing to do is to say, "excuse me". But there are a lot of rude folks, as you've found out.

I never understood why a land can say its got no push option on but allows you to be pushed or pushed.
I don't go out much these days sometimes I don't walk good or friends want me somewhere so they push me somewhere, usually its for a group hug where I am in center of fd hug sandwich.
I always apologize if its accident but sometimes I don't see people.

In the old days, before I was even born I shoudl add, there was a dance called ' the bump'. People seemed to have enjoyed it from the black and white films I've seen.

If somebody else sees you dancing but you see yourself perfectly still, it's an indication that you've enabled a dance animation somehow (clicked on a dance ball at a club maybe?), and although the animations have been downloaded to the other person's client, they haven't downloaded to yours yet. Basically, you don't appear dancing to anybody (yourself included) until the dance animation is sent to the viewer's computer.

Sometimes, networking problems prevent us receiving assets, so it's possible your computer was unable to download that dance animation at that particular time, even though it wasn't a problem for your friends, hence why they saw you dancing but you didn't.

The Missing Image clothes is a real indication that there were asset server problems at that time too. If the proper assets (textures in the case of those clothes) can't be received, wham, ugly white texture with 'MISSING IMAGE' in block capitals appears.
