I'd say good skins at most are around 1000 lindens. At 275 lindens/dollar that comes out to $3.63 US.

Search is your friend on these forums and in-world ;) It's all a matter of research and a little patience. Everyone has their own favorites. ;)

"Sin Skins" at Pixel Dolls is having a $L 10 sale right now, or at least I think it's still going on.

Look for the sale room there.

Their skins are not bad.

My favorite places for skins are Redgrave, Bebae, and Belleza (so far.) A decent skin pack can cost you $3000 Lindens and up. 256 Lindens are about one American dollar.

*Make sure to try the demo before buying, as skins do not look the same on every avatar. It all has to do with shape.*

Of course you will probably only get responses here on what "females" think are the best skins . . .

Pep ( . . . but perhaps you are not worried what males think looks good?)

"Best" is very subjective. Plus the fact that the wrong skin for your shape (or shape for your skin) will make any designers skin look bad. Get demos. Lots of demos. Then look to see which ones you like best.

You mean you girls might actually be interested in what men find attractive? That would be a first in these forums - a female asking a male's opinion. It makes you wonder what the point of all the clothes and shoes are. ;)

Pep (likes the Skin Within, I think they are called, but he doesn't usually ask the girls he finds attractive where they bought their bewbies etc . . . :p )

PS Perhaps now is the time to start: "Excuse me, you have a remarkably attractive skin and I am doing a survey for the forums". )

Depends on your shape too. Some skins work for me; others do not. For instance, I don't like how some of the 'popular' choices look on me, though others swear by them. That said, I recommend you take a look at both Vassnia and Skin Within, among others. They are my current favorites, and I think they work well for me. Not necessarily the 'best' in the eyes of others, but I am enjoying them. There are also many small 'shops' in-world where one can find a 'diamond in the rough.' For me, that is part of the fun of exploration. As a 'skinaholic' with over 1000 skins in inventory, I enjoy a change once in awhile. The one constant is that I try to maintain a consistency to my appearance by using a single shape of my own making (I do not use vendor-supplied shapes), adjusted and tuned over many, many hours in an attempt to give myself a bit of a Eurasian 'edge.' I enjoy surprises, and because of my shape, when I try on a skin, I seldom, if ever, look anything like the model on the poster, lol. To me, that is part of the fun. :)

Simply put, do not underestimate the value of being able to make your shape work well with whatever skin you choose to purchase. It can make all the difference. However, always remember to back up your current shape before making wholesale changes. I have many date-stamped versions of my shape going back to 2006. There is no risk to changing your shape if create a backup before doing so. So don't be afraid to play with those sliders. :)

I've included two examples below which use the same shape, the first image using a skin by Vassnia, the second, by Skin Within.

I have some other LMs that I can give you in-world if you feel like exploring a bit on your own.

My latest purchase from League, Misty fair, has 4 skins in the same pack. 2 with hairbase and 2 without. 2 with cleavage enchanger and 2 without. Wear the cleavage skins with a corset top and you will have the "push-up" effect.

1000 L for a good skin is a good "thumb rule". Some shops have very good deals on fatpacks. LAQ offer 8 makeups for 1995 L, my fav there is "Tasha". Only hairbase/no hairbase in that pack. Curio has huge fatpacks where you get 8 makeups too, but freckles/no freckles, lipstick/no lipstick, and even darker and lighter versions of the tan.

Find out what you want most.
- Hairbase?
- Cleavage enchanger?
- Freckles?
- Natural brows vs. thin brows?
- Lips glossy? Pouty?
- Eyebrows color? (if you want brows that match your haircolor)
- Shaved or pubic hair?

It's a lot of options out there, my best advice is to read fashion blogs. Like this one:

Men can read that and say what they like best, too ;)

Any recommendations for places that do a variety of good pale skins -- not goth white, just fair-skinned? I'd love to have a better, more realistic skin, but the ones I see around are all either too tan or too freckled or too corpselike or too made-up or too ingenue. Once in a while I wear an Eloh skin with just smoky makeup, but mostly I use my newbie-designed appearance with a freebie skin that's just shading and mostly transparent, so my slider appearance shows through with just a bit more definition. It's the only thing I've found that makes me look like me, and not like someone else. I'm sure what I want must be out there somewhere, but the search is so discouraging...

Curio's "Moonbeam" is rather famous. The shade abowe that is "Petal".
Nomine is know as a place for goth skins, their "China White" is very pale, but I am sure they have skins just a bit darker, but not tanned.
5th & Oxford has nice pale skins, rosy cheeks and glossy lips.
If you want more natural and fresh skins (not so much makeup) Adam'n Eve has some very nice skins.
Cupcakes has pale skins.
Tuli also...

Taste is individual, and what's "pale" has a wide definition. League's "Misty" skins just came in a pale tone that most think is too dark. I think it's perfect, since I want skins that's not ghost white. Bloggers are showing skin rewievs all the time. One of the most hardworking, Gogo, has a whole set on Flickr.

There's lots of bloggers who show off the newest skins all the time. They put a lot of time and effort in it.

I guess I just didn't suppose a male would be up on the latest women's brands; perhaps a bit sexist of me.

Skin Within are nice. I wouldn't wear prim bewbies anyway, so no need to ask for landmarks on my account, on those. Unless you mean those shaders one can layer over a skin, for more 'realism.' (Actually, I wouldn't wear those either. Too many look like mud smears.)

And yes that is not a bad line. Whether it would work, who knows.

Rihanna - I wear Redgrave, they look realistic because they are photo sourced, and they make pale or tan. Tuli is also not bad for pale skins.

My point is rather that you girls seem to assess skins by what they look like *to you*, rather than whether they achieve the required effect on potential paramours. :p

Of course, many "females" may be attempting to arouse the attentions of other "females", and some may be simply "dressing up dolly" and not care how they might be perceived as potential partners in the eyes of others apart from the "vanity factor" of making others envious of their appearance; it is still relevant for those men who want trophy wives, I suppose. ;)

Pep (Me, I don't buy cars for what they look like, but for getting me places comfortably, speedily and reliably. )

There's an old blues song that statement reminds me of.

As for me I just want to look nice; I'm not looking for an SL paramour.

Another vote here for LAQ and I make my own shape.

EDIT: I forgot, Rockberry skins are really nice too.

EDIT, EDIT: Just been to Skin Within and I have to say I am underwhelmed, the LAQ skins are much better done with better tones and definition, in my opinion.

Thanks... I'll start checking out those places this weekend. I can easily enough find skins with acceptable makeup and eyebrows, but the skin tone has been a real bear for me. There's lots of places that have fair skins, even if it's only one in a series of skin tones. But too often the tan skins look good and the goth skins look good and the skins in between have a sort of greyish undercast to them that makes you look sickly. (That includes the Sin Skins demos I picked up at the sale -- thanks for mentioning it! It didn't help with the skins, but I picked up a few other nice things. :) )

You're welcome, and I agree - a lot of times the skin tone in the painted skins looks flat. It's one reason I prefer the photorealist ones I guess.

Also don't forget the freebie blogs - they often feature freebie skins you can try out.

http://fabfree.wordpress.com

That site is featuring Chai skin at the moment. I've heard nice tihngs about their skins. If you join the group you can probably click 'get past notices' and get that pack of 15 skins.

--

http://freebietelegraph.wordpress.com

This one's featuring A Piece of Candy which normally has $1 Linden skins anyway. I found theirs a bit heavy on the makeup but they have frequent hunts and some very cheap basic clothes, worth a stop for.

--

Then I recommend joining DSN because it doesn't take a group slot, has no spam, and just spits out freebies daily! Lol. You can sign up in various categories for free, including skins.

http://cleverthings.info/dsn/lang/en

Their website has a list of places which have the DSN sign-up kiosk.

All the above sites are updated frequently.

I was going to recommend Sin Skins, but I know what you mean about a funny "cast" to certain shades - and not just in one particular line or by one particular maker.

Have you checked out Launa Fauna? My alt bought some of the Chai skins on deep discount before they were retired, and now there is another line marked down (or was, I got the notice a week or two ago).

They are not as photorealistic or shaded as some other, but I've been happy with my Mela skins, which are based on the Eloh templates - the shade lighter than I wear is Sakura, I think, and it's quite pale. Actually, I think I like them better because they are less photorealistic.

Also, do try Tuli.

If you are up for a LOT of group notices, you could sign up for the Fashion Consolidated group. Many skin makers give out samples or gifts through there, so it might save you some grid-hopping.

ETA: I just read Clarissa's post, and apparently either the Chai skins were not retired as I thought, or there is a different line by the same name. But the recommendation to check out the Chai skins stands... thanks for the link Clarissa, btw :)
