LL are dumping (auctioning off) 30 sims that they'd set up last year before the move to the new continent occurs and land prices sink again. They are not totally stupid then.

The reason they stopped auctioning them is that they weren't getting any bids.

They might now, but I doubt they will get much other than minimum bids, if they do.

Yes, I'd forgotten that. They started auctioning them today - 3 of them and no bids so far. It'll be interesting to see if they sell.

Elanthius (of all people active here in the forums, anyway) can probably speak best as to the desirability of Yet More Mature Mainland Sims at auction right now and, thus, their "value", but I think that, with the glut of mainland as it is at the moment, the auctions are basically just a formality. Likely, most of them won't get a bid, and will sit there to be stuck back in the queue again next year.

As if "next year" will be any better, with Mature mainland heading sub-L$1/sqm.

Well .......

Some might buy a cheap sim and fill it with naughty porn, so that they can swap into a full sim in Ursula, and not have to share a sim with laggy places.

Waddya mean the 30 auction sims are all PG????

Have they no shame. Bait and switch again. These auctions should have a disclaimer attached about the pending changes on mainland mature and a link to the blog about. No need to completely dupe these folks out of $750 USD.

May not be too big a deal. The minimum bid is US$750, that's about L$3/sqm. Land prices now are floating around 3.2/sqm, 3.3/sqm something like that. Would you buy,cut and resell a full sim if you knew the worst parcel in the whole grid was worth L$3.3/sqm? Well, I would.

30 sims isn't very much when you consider the whole mainland is 5000 sims. Plus if the market starts to move down, to 2.5/sqm or 1/sqm or some crazy thing then no-one will bid on the auctions if the minimum stays US$750. It's a kind of self correcting problem.

Could be pretty interesting to see what happens. I wouldn't cry too much about duping folks out of $750. Anyone bidding on a full sim will be pretty land savvy. Either that or someone with more money than sense.

I'll watch, but I doubt I'll bid. Auctioned land is usually way more expensive than regular land.

USD$750 for a full mainland sim is a bargain really, if people get them for minimum bid then fair play to them.

Having much experience of buying and selling west PG protected ocean, ocean view, and Mature ocean view and researching the surrounding 'going rates' (as in going to land bots or abandonment) over the past 2 months many 512's are dropping below L$2k. As i say in blog the land bots arrive at L$1500-1600 for BOTH PG AND MATURE....at one time mature was always more expensive.

Sellers have to hope neighbours need more prims or that a passing newbie makes their day....

Bargain? +VAT + TIER USD 195 + poss VAT a month? that is a lot before you even try and claw some back with the saturated rental market and yet more clothing malls.....and not being able to fully use it as you may wish....

Try buying one inworld for that price, it's a bargain price. I pay VAT, I'd have little worries about renting out a full mainland sim, I simply don't have enough faith in LL to stump up the money after the Openspace fiasco.

I wouldn't touch any of those Auction sims with a bargepole. I want to see what Mainland prices are after the Ursula project.

/me considers getting planck, just so she can do support tickets about the time being off.

(TY!)

edit: these look more like reclaimed regions getting fed back to the market. I had the impression Jack was finishing off some corner of a continent or something..

lol yeah.....even if they gave me it free, i'd probably offload it quickly.....wouldn't want to be lumbered with tiers for empty lands. The only use maybe would be make it house my Main shops and relocate from existing locations......otherwise No sir!

You're right on...we (2 members of my land group) each picked up abutting 512's 2-3 days ago, one was L$1999, one was L$1767, and also an abutting 256m for L$999, all Mature and all with an unobstructed water view (at least for now). Private sales all. Jackie

Honestly - I'm not trying to be contentious here, just curious.

I assume you don't own any land then because if you rent or lease estate land you are still paying tier, just doing it through a proxy. Likewise, if you purchase products or patronize clubs you are still feeding the Linden money machine as a consumer.

I'm just trying to understand what kind of involvement one can have in Second Life that does not ultimately require some kind of investment.

Not trolling. No debate. Just curious.

Rime

I know quite a few people that never spent any of their own money in SL. But of course they
were very thrifty types and they became successful through hard work and creativity.
The investments they did end up making to aquire land or other assets was from money they
made in SL. They never had to bring any money in from outside SL. Some of them continue to grow their businesses yet to this day have never cashed any money out of SL.

This type of person is definitely the exception, but it does happen. There are also lots of people that do not spend money who just like to dance and chat, shop freebies etc.

Buy one mainland sim in an uncontested auction for US$750
You're going to make a fortune cutting and selling it, but you'll be stuck with a month's tier even if you sell it all within hours. Nevermind - you're going to make a fortune if you get the sim that cheaply.

Cost of sim L$ 194250 or L$2.96/metre
Cost of tier L$ 50505
Total outlayL$ 244755 or L$3.73 /metre

Expected selling price per meter..... eh ... mmmmmm.. 3.4 or 3.5 Max

A little story:
Someone bought a big chunk of sim in Heterocera, bounded by the SLRR and Route one.
They cut it into 512s at 10/metre. The parcels at the jaggy boundaries of the Linden railway were a little bigger. Everything was 10/m regardless of bounding road or rail. So lazy!

I bought two parcels beside the rail track, joined them to get a 32metre boundary on the railway, and then cut out a 512 separated from the railway - basically turned the existing parcel cutting through 90 degrees.
So I go to sell the 512 I don't want/need.
At what price?
1792 - making it the 48th cheapest parcel of that size in SL.
Two hours later, I think "Hey, we're talking peanuts here"
Drop the price to 1740 - making it the 4th cheapest 512 parcel in Search.
In the good/bad old days, that would have gone in an instant.
It took another 8 hours before someone bought it.
This isn't crap now, it's very clean flat fresh green.
(( If the bots are buying, they are buying it at less than the 3.4 that they are trying to flip it for. ))

That person flipped it back on the market at 1750.
Wow! A L$10 markep!!
7 hours later, someone buys it and flips it back on the market at 1850.
There it sits.
This morning, he dropped the price to 1800 and put a rental box on it. L$200/week.
Maybe it will sell in a few days, maybe it won't -- at 3.5/metre

So go buy a sim and tier at 3.7/metre and make a fortune :)

Or if you don't pay tier (tier is for the little people!) that's 2.9/metre
Sell it all at 3.4 a metre and make a whacking profit of 0.5/metre - a markup of L$32768 or about US$120 ---- but that's only if you didn't pay US$195 in tier -- any you were the only bidder in the auction.
