I just met a new friend (not like an "offer friendship and never hear from them friend, but someone who actually is making an effort friend, how unusual!), a guy, but bless him he hasn't got fashion sense to save his life yet. He has managed to create a nice Av, got himself some really good hair and did a nice shape on his own so he doen't look like a Ken doll thankfully lol. But his wardrobe could use some help, and I'd like to take him around and help him find some better clothing.

But he is adament about not spending money. He's managed to buy up quite a bit of land, and created several great sims for himself, all with free stuff from houses, landscaping, foundatins, poses, the whole thing soup to nuts. Very frugal as you can see. So, free is the key. He does at least own a nice tux already :-) But I must get him out of his "Ruthed" clothing if we're going to be hanging out together, which it appears we will be.

Best thing is, I am no longer homeless - he's offered me complete use of any of his houses, any time I want whether he is there or not. Yep, I think he's quite smitten, well, at least for now...

Next time I am inworld I will see if I can drop the freebie male clothing folders I've collected over the years but never sorted.

Thanks for looking at least Raymond. Too bad you didn't think it worthwhile, but I'm glad you didn't send it if it was't decent.

Perhaps you could just suggest a few men's clothing stores instead that don't rape you on prices? Maybe I can convince him with my feminine charms that spending money isn't a crime?

He's a business owner, and he expects everything he obtains for personal use to be free? Incredulous.

Or as Bill Gates told Homer Simpson "Oh, I didn't get rich by writing a lot of checks!"

I work with/for these people. My CEO is notorious for stealing sodas from the fridge. But that's RL. In SL I get the impression people value the work of others --and themselves--differently. Most stuff I've come across is frankly underpriced considering the work and skill that went into it. If decent merchandise were available for free in the real world it would be an interesting economy.

For all practical purposes anyone could come into SL and "play" it the way they want, investing any amount of money and making any level of profit with nothing more than our dear Ruth avatar.

There's that rape word again.

Say you were gonna buy this guy a pair of pants. At what point does the price become rape?

FORM have always seemed quite reasonble to me, considering the high quality of their products. In fact you could do a lot worse than take him to the Varado sim if you're hunting clothes for a guy you don't wanna look like a Ken doll. You're spoilt for choice there basically. ;)

When did I say he owned a business? He only bought land and put some homes on it, which he himself lives in :-) Plus, I don't think he's inherently cheap, he paid for the hair, he's offered to buy things for me, and the land sure wasn't free lol.

Edited: Or, were you referring to Mr. Figtree? I think I just realized you may have been.

Lol - gotta watch those words around here :-) Good thing I'm a women or I really would have been reamed for that one.

Umm, if I were paying, I'd say $500L would be rape :-)

Thanks for those two suggestions tho, I'll make note of them. I'm not trying to change him per se. If he's comfortable the way he is, so be it. I'm going to feel him out about it. Could just be he hasn't gotten that far to realize that clothing is just as important for men as for women. I think he's more consumed right now with getting his sims looking perfect, than his wardrobe. Besides, my wardrobe was "Ruthed" probably longer than I realized too. Let alone my hair. And skin. What a horror. At least he had enough sense to take care of that!

Black Moon has a good free men's suit, boxed under the stairs.

It would not be inappropriate for you to buy him a little something in return for the free housing, do you think?

I believe DE Designs has trans clothing?

Yes, although everything released in the past few months is now No Trans, BUT available on slexchange.com, and being added to OnRez as well, which both allow for gifting.
The second floor has a lot of older designs and separates on discount (those should currently all be transferrable).

Queenie, that's a good idea. I got a few things from OnRez myself (free LOL) which were actually really nice. My favorite was 3 versions of a goth Lolita dress which is very detailed, I get compliments on it all the time. I'm sure they have some great men's clothing too.

Thanks for that thought!

Tell him to go to the Hippie Bank with disposable email account and then go to Redgrave. Not cheap, but nice looking stuff.

You know, I agree. That would be a pretty outrageous price for a mere pair of pants, whatever the quality. =D

It's a valid point, reflected in the fact that women spend far more than men on products here.

You need to get sneaky. Take him out to some fancy places where the guys dress up real flash. Eventually, he'll start to feel inadequate and beg you to find him some decent clothing stores. ;)

My bad, I was referring to him. I assumed he had a business since he bought all this land. Besides, land costs money - I take it he does something to earn the L to pay for it. I assumed it was renting to others.

Well, if he does do something, I haven't discovered it yet :-) We're still learning about each other. Going slow, kind of like in RL lol. Except for him letting me live with him which unlike in RL holds no danger. He bought a lot of land apparently, and from what I can tell thus far, nobody else lives anywhere near him at all. We were flying around a bit the other day, and I saw nobody nearby. He's taking me sailing next week, that should be interesting too, so I'll have to do a bit more snooping - see where we launch off from and what's around there too. Wonder if he has his own marina too?

Perhaps he's really a serious land baron around here and just being cautious with me before he lets on about his real situation? Remains to be seen. All I know is he really enjoys my company and we're having a good time together - that's all I care about. If it turns out he's wealthy, it's only SL anyway, it will mean nothing really in the grand scheme of things hehe.

Although now that you brought it up -what does land around here cost?

Mainland starts at about $11 US per 512 plot. Then there's land use fees which you can see listed on this page. The more you own, the more you pay LL monthly.

Ehrmm... It's just possible this guy would gender-verify as MALE. ;)

Seriously, if I had to spend a significant amount of time shopping for clothes, my secondlife would be miserable and brief.

Also, having subjected myself to some of the "better" clothing stores (as a test of endurance), there's really nothing like a L$400 pair of jeans with mismatched seams and somebody else's idea of a funky pattern to make one think seriously of making one's own clothes again. This compulsive self-reliance is a male thing, ya know... kinda like not asking for directions.

So, yeah, I too will pretty much stick to freebie clothes--especially if they can be had without shopping torture.

Wow! Gender verify as male! You mean I may have actually found a real man on the other side? This must be my lucky day!

I hear what you're saying Qie, and it appears this may be where he's coming from. I did bring it up yesterday, and thankfully our friendship has progressed far enough where he didn't take it as any kind of 'dis and he totally agreed with me that he could use some updating, that he isn't a "shopper" and got accustomed to the same thing day in and day out. He did then show me some of his other clothing. I found out he has some shall we say, rather eccentric tastes lol - but it kind of goes with his personality, and he is very into role playing, so I wasn't surprised.

Actually - his main explanation for the clothing had to do with the fact that his "family" (he's created an entire family for himself in-world - sometimes runs them off 2 computers so they can be on the screen at the same time, how freaky is that?) is used to seeing him a certain way and so, he forgets when he is with me, that he can dress better lol.

He was very agreeable to going around looking with me, trying things on that he already has for me to see what I liked on him; a step in the right direction :-)

Well, if he's willing shopping together can be lots of fun.

But as you describe him he has a lot of SL building, buying etc. on his plate. So you may want to be sensitive to his time constraints.

Again, and particularly now that he has shown you some of his tastes, I think the best thing you could do would be to actually loosen your own purse strings and buy him some simple things. As you describe it, he is being very generous towards you, buying you things and giving you shelter. Why you in return want to subject him to TPing around after freebies is beyond me.

*shrug*
