Think the TV on in the background was me. Forgot to turn it voice chat off when I used my lap top. Maybe on by default might be a bad idea. Plus the setting never stuck because I keep crashing. So I would forget to turn the dang thing off.

Check your prefs: the checkbox that says "Enable voice" or whatever it says.

Somehow I don't think "push to listen" = "enable ALL OF VOICE CHAT"
Seems like I get more than I want for more effort (Edit -> prefs -> voice -> enable).

There is apt to be a resistence to people who don't use voice chat by those that do. A lot of them will assume we are hiding something. In some cases, we are. I am a transsexed woman.

Are you one of those hidding Hehehhehe :D
But my typing is bad, and if i had to talk the english would be worse for otehrs to understand. But sooner or later I do voice but not until the tunnel effect of sound is corrected!

I don't know what's available on the PC, but there's this wonderful program for the Mac called Audio Hijack. It can record any sound on your Mac. Which would include voice chat. Of course, it would be a beyotch to start it running every time I log in, just in case I get griefed. If I had a big hard drive for hours worth of audio, maybe I'd try it.

Add to it just being able to record all the chat is quite pointless for everything but "i may get griefed" instances -- for history recording it's like being able to record all chatlogs but with no way to search through files... now try to find that relevant piece of talk with one customer which took place X month ago, in dozen hours worth of recording.

Also since the recorded voice doesn't actually carry any information about *who* is speaking, good luck using it as proof of "this is John Doe hurling obscenities at me in the sandbox". Maybe he is, maybe he isn't.

You mean like having everyone muted by default and only unmuting people you want (eg. people on your friends list)? That actually would be a nice feature.

Regarding people not using voice being ostracized, so far I haven't encountered any discrimination against people who don't have voice enabled. It just becomes natural to talk to them with text and talk in voice at the same time.

It's actually sort of interesting to watch how everyone deals with it. Like a topic brought up in text usually stays in mostly in text even if everyone does have voice, and the same with voice.

Personally I use exclusively text for messages such as "brb" and "tks" even if I'm still talking in voice chat, just because I'd never actually say "be right back" irl. And for example today I had the fan on my desk turned on so I couldn't use voice without making everyone go deaf from wind noise, but I could still hear people and I just responded to them in text and they responded to me in voice.

So despite the hype that seems to be floating around such issues. I think a lot of them are unfounded and an underestimation of most people's ability and willingness to adapt and accommodate other users. Granted, there will undoubtedly be people who are stubburn and aren't understanding, but then they'd be that way in chat too so voice doesn't really change that.

And as far as problems with background noise. I have a feeling much of this will get better once LL has PTT turned on by default. Because, as it is now, while PTT is on by default, it's locked into the "on" position until you turn it off.
