From: Tod69 Talamasca LOL!
But seriously, don't these "built in" mics have a 'disable' feature? Like in Windows Control Panel > System? At least that way if it was automatically enabled, yours would indicate No Mic. Oh, certainly, however I'm a cruel and evil little dragon and I wouldn't do anything about it. Except turn off my speakers.

From: Ceera Murakami The default is that Voice is enabled unless the land owner disables it. We still have no clue if an individual actually has a "disable voice" option. The test version has a 'disable voice' option. From: Ceera Murakami If you're on a computer that has a built-in microphone, will it assume you're "voice enabled", and give you a "live mike" even if you don't realize it?
Hope not, I can't see that's being good for anyone. From: Ceera Murakami 2)Person A has speakers but no mic, B does. B can talk and A can hear, but to reply A types and B sees it. A gets to hear B whether they want to or not. No way to tune them out other than turning off sound entirely?
You can 'opt-out' of voice (yes I know many people want opt-in), so other sounds are fine, but you won't hear voice. It's a toggle, so you can turn it off late at night/when the kids are home/in the office. From: Ceera Murakami 3)Person A cannot (or doesn't want to) listen to voice, A and B communicate via typing. Or person B shouts and tries to get person A's attention, while person A doesn't have a clue they are being spoken to.
Yes, unfortunately voice will be available to stupid/rude people as well... It's possible we may get an indicator that B is *trying* to talk to us but I don't know.

From: Ceera Murakami I finally save up enough money to replace my aging Mac Mini with a new Mac. And of course, it has a built-in mike and speakers, so the Voice-enabled SL client assumes I want to use Voice... The viewer has no way of knowing whether you have a mic or not, and so far it's been "voice enabled by default, push-to-talk disabled by default". From: someone I log on, and before I can figure out how to disable this unwanted "feature", my huge dog starts barking right next to me, and deafens half the people in the sim! Assuming those people have any hearing left, they won't be asking you to do voice anytime soon. Not really seeing a bad side to this .

Open Mic

From: Ceera Murakami ...If you log onto SL with a computer that has a built-in microphone and speakers, like most laptops and almost all the new generation of desktop Macs, will SL just assume that you're "Voice enabled", and leave you stuck with an "open mike" that you may not even realize is live and broadcasting what you say? There.com sets the standard for this requirement. There's no reason SL can't at least do what Voice is like in There. 1) Key Up The Mic - The ability to activate the microphone by pressing a single key (e.g. in There.com, PgDn does this) 2) Visual Indicator of Mic - The ability to show when the mic is keyed up (active) (e.g. in There.com, you see something like a white oscilloscope sound wave over the head of the avatar when the microphone keys up) 3) Visual Indicator of Amplitude - The ability to visually see when the microphone is too low, too high, or just right. (e.g. (e.g. in There.com, you see something like a white oscilloscope sound wave over the head of the avatar that wavers when the person talks and increases in amplitude the hotter the mic) 4) Hand Free Mic - The ability to turn the activate the mic constantly so that the microphone key is not required. 5) Spacialized Sound - The ability to hear the sound as a sound source in world, eminating from the 3D direction of the avatar. 6) Voice within IM Channel - The ability to privately talk to one or more avatars within the IM session, instead of within world. 7) Good Quality Sound If you nail all these, you'll be all set, Linden Lab.

I had my thrill last night. I only amused myself though. I logged into voice beta, using my brand new sound blaster audagy card, and went to lusk platform. Since nobody was around, i decided to test out my mic quality at full volume, by yelling into the mic. XD Boy was that loud. Yea i re-adjusted the sound level to where it won't do that again, but it was fun to see how loud it can go. Yiffy Yaffle SCREAMS! Other Resident: Someone break a leg or something? o.o

I think I'll record a sound clip of that barking dog. He's so loud he causes the shadow mask on my CRT to shake, even though he is on the far side of the room. I've estimated it at 110 decibels, which is above the pain threshold for most people. I won't need a headset, just an imported sound and a gesture to trigger it.

From: Ethan Pow how do i get the beta client for voice Right now, you don't. It is a closed beta test. There will be a public beta later, after the first round is done.
