Whoa, AJ, that's actually quite effective! And no obvious alpha-sort issues, either! I'm certainly impressed.

So many neat ideas coming up! Who knows what we'll see next...?

Got the encoder sorted eventually, so here it is...

AJ's furlexy tail of doom!

Totally impractical (and poorly textured, I might add), but fun anyway. ;)

this is so neat... i want one as a pet. the movement actually reminds me of an aquatic animals... what a great idea for an aquarium with an eel in it or something.

I tried the two prims flexing together on a cape so I could overlay a logo on the cape, but it didn't work right, they were mostly in sync but occasionally one would flick out of sync. Is that fixed or do you have the same issue and it's just not visible i that video, or what?

I think the problem is with the way flex prims are handled. As I understand it, the calculations for them are done only using spare processing power that isn't used for other things; so it's possible for one to get updated in a frame while another isn't, causing them to go out of sync. To get a good video with my tail, for example, I turned down almost all graphics options to minimum and turned off all other flex prims in the area. I made another tail with twice as many shells too, and whenever that moved the shells would move off all over the place.

Simplifying some of the calculations by setting things to 0 (particularly gravity) seems to help somewhat, but there doesn't seem to be any way to guarantee they'll stay lined up all the time.

If anyone's come across any other tricks that help, please do tell. :)

Beatfox, did you script the tail? Or is it just ambiental phisics working in it to do all the movements? If you did what commands are available in lsl to handle pushes in the flexiprim you know?

llSetPrimitiveParams([PRIM_FLEXIBLE, ...params... , <force>]);

I didn't fill in all the parameters, they can be found in the wiki, but the last parameter for PRIM_FLEXIBLE is a force vector, which can apply a constant force to the flexible prim. It's a force so it's persistant until you turn it off. It's also global, not local, so if you wanted to push the tail sideways on an avatar you have to figure out which way is sideways in relation to your avatar and then update it frequently enough so that when the avatar turns the force doesn't cause strange things to happen. Easy enough to do with llRotLeft();

Thanks for the support Rickard, I was discussing with some other guy last night isnt llSetPriminitiveParams something that could lag everyone to death if a few ppl use it to anim flexiprims?
Probably that´s the only way to make it for the moment, I hope they implement some lighter commands to it, llSetprimParams uses a good ammount of parameters...

I didn't script it to change the flex parameters, but I did script it to randomly rotate the attachment in small amounts to make the tail move while I'm standing still.

Nothing available yet, but I am working on something that will hopefully be ready to sell in the near future. :)

Very cool tail, Beatfox ^.^
Works surprisingly well, althouhg it seems to "fall apart" a little in high lag environments (noticed when Frogg played at Luskwood).

Too bad we can't have spheres flexible.. I'd LOVE to do a kittytail like that, but the rounded tip is not possible to do, I think, as well as a straight line down and then the small arching up for the tip.. but for Foxtails.. this is perfect ^^.

Oh, it's rather easy. Objects at the same coordinates with the same flexible settings and (and this is important) the same z height behave the same. The x and y sizes don't matter. So make a tube, put an alpha texture on it, make a cube, put anothe alpha texture on it..

Basically you create the final shape by overlapping prims that are all at the same height and have the same flexible settings, and then using alpha textures to texture only those parts of the surfaces that you want to be visible.

Hope this helped ^.^

Yeah, WolfTail made that a while back. Funny thing is, the entire thing is made out of paperclips and a few other household items. There is a servo pack at the top of the tail which rotates to pull the strings that are in the tail. It's really simple how it works but applying it as a wearable object was hard. If you take a look at his site you can see his wolf head that was made with paperclips and uses similar technology.

I cannot figure out how to make this tail on my own. Can you please provide a detailed step by step (with pictures) guide on how to create this tail? I just can't figure this out.

Very awsome tail! I've been workin on something like this and got a working customizable "wag/twitch" system and seperate tail-control script going, but maybe now I can make a working wolf tail with that technique :D

You can use more then 2 prims on these, but more you add, wierder it gets when you move av, or cam out, and back update > bouncy wierdness tail flop a few sec (eh its clientside so ignored it).

Anyway to make 2 diffrent tails its something like this, and i cant post pic right now since photobucket is being a ass -.- soon.

Tail 1 exsample

easiest, make a prim, and size it lenght, then rotate it a few times around itself, apply a alpha texture, link them, and set every prim you want to be flexy excactly the same parameters.

Tail 2
make 2 prims exactly the same size, ontop of eachother, put a alpha thats half alpha on both, and make it so you can see texture on only one side of each (ey yeh this is damn easy to explain without pics : p )

kinda like both are this big
<------------>
but with alpha you only see this
<----><---->
dont have them overlap, SL is odd with alpha at 1.0 setting so i usually set texture size to 0.995 to avoid wierd white line at end

bah...cmon stupid mail give me back my password -.- forgot so no piccie...la la la

What are your flexi settings on the tail?
