Hi Hiro, Wonderful idea! But I thought you were a Japanese-American or something, looking at your builds and products Let me suggest a translation as the machine translation actually doesn't make sense at all; From: Hiro Pendragon Hello! I would like to start a group for people to learn English and Japanese. We could meet for an hour every week or every second week. Is anyone else interested? You can always find someone to try out your Japanese at Ama-No-Iwato (see my Picks), which is a temporary hangout (or quarantine ) for Japanese speaking players. Currently many of us are busy building in the new JP grid, but I'm sure there are many who'd be interested in your idea. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help.

Well, I'm certainly interested. I crammed a fair bit of japanese earlier this year, but too much of it has been dribbling out of my head because I have no real opportunity to use it. Timezones could be an issue.

From: Azrael Zagato my computer can input japanese ??? The in-world chat/IM can handle Japanese characters OK, but notecard/script editor can't. Makiko Linden told me they are working on it. If you're on a Mac, there should be no problem. Simply enable a Japanese Input Method in your System Preference and type away (But use Firefox instead of Safari when posting in the forums as Safari sucks at handling two-byte charsets.) http://www4.atwiki.jp/secondlife/pages/18.htmlOtherwise, follow Bond's advice in another thread; From: Bond Harrington On a Microsoft platform, install Japanese language support (this should come in XP or the Windows Update), Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) (same here) and download the UTF-8 fonts (do a search). Arial unicode fonts can be downloaded at Sourceforge; http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/vietunicode/Aruniupd.exe?downloadNon-exe version can be found here; ftp://ftp.mplayerhq.hu/Mplayer/contrib/font/arialuni.ttf.bz2I have no idea about the Linux client

From: Azrael Zagato funny thing... those question marks WERE japanese charachters. interesting how the became question marks... I was using safari Mm, did you remember to tell Safari that you were dealing with UTF-8 (Unicode), instead of ISO-8859-1 (Default for most computers distributed in the USA -- en_US)? From: Chie Salome ã?§ã??ã?¾ã?™ã‚ˆã€‚ãƒ? 題ã?‚りã?¾ã?›ã‚“ã?Œã€?ノートカードやスクリプトエディタã?§ã?¯æ—¥æœ¬èªžã‚’扱ã?ˆã?ªã?„よã?†ã?§ã?™ã€‚ã?“ã?®å•?題ã?¯ä¿®ï¿½***ã??ã?†ã?§ã?™ã€‚ The above-quoted text should be in Japanese. You may have to turn off any sort of auto-detect features of your browser to get it to behave -- I had to tell Firefox, "YOU IDIOT! Unicode. Not Western. UNICODE." before I could preview with anything beyond keyboard vomit and question marks.

I would love to learn japanese as well. I have made some efforts into learning it recently, but would like some more help. I think a group would be fine.
Also it seems to me like somone might find a niche as a japanense tutor in SL. I think the potential for SL as a language learning tool could be very interesting. In any case If somone wants to help out I am interested.
Also it would be nice to talk to people about modern Japanses trends, in style, lifestyle and fashion.

I'd be interested in such a group... I've taken enough years of Japanese classes that I really should be good enough for conversation by now (not saying I am... but we'll see). Anyway, if anything's happening with this just let me know.

09-14-2005 17:25
If anybody is serious about organizing a group to learn japanese (or english as a language exchange) IM me inworld when im online(i get a lot and cant check my email), or post here in the forum. I can teach beginner through advanced (pre-undergraduate) Japanese but do not have the time to organize a decent project at the moment...
Would be happy to collaborate though ^^....

I'm getting started in finishing learning Japanese. It's been a hobby, starting to learn, for the last few years and since I'm getting ready to actually visit I thought I'd better finally learn. It'd be goodly to find and talk to people who actually speak it, beyond my teacher.

watashi mo My japanese skills are not great. I soaked up hiragana and katakana, and a couple hundred kanji (for meanings at least), plus assorted vocabulary and grammar. Short of exchanging a few words here and there with folks whose online time only barely intersects with mine though, I've not had an opportunity to use it, and I fear that it's all dribbling out the bottom of my skull. Suddenly, while I look at hiragana, I'm having to sound it out again, and there are huge gaps in my vocuabulary, and I'm starting to forget how to conjugate desu O_o We've obviously not managed much of a get-together time, but perhaps we can link up a bit. Someone I can IM/talk to in hiragana or romaji just for the sake of practise, to try to get me up to about a decent first grade level would be nice. I hardly know enough words for a conversation, though, so I'd have to learn as I went.

Considering I'm working on some scripted products for Japanes/English use (like darumas and mankei nekos and auto-omikuji...) I should learn a bit more Japanese, no?

Hi there, Did anyone create an actual group in SL? I would love to join, and meet up when I have a chance. I speak Japanese to a moderate degree (I have a lot of speaking experience but my vocabulary is still pretty lacking) but I hopefully know enough to help out beginners. For the last 4 years, I've spent almost half my time in Japan (and half in US). In fact, I'm in Sapporo in Hokkaido right now It's a lovely city Also, I just got one of my Japanese friends to sign-up but he doesnt have a clue about SL still, so I'm sure he'd be interested in meeting up with lots of Japanese speaking people. I heard a couple of people mention the JP grid. Is this a whole separated grid? Or a bunch of islands/mainland sims on the regular grid? I'd love to check it out. 。。。。 白黒

Hi Shirokuro Your friend may find Japan Newbie's Club (I'm not sure if this is the exact name) useful. There are a lot of Japanese players willing to help in that group, including me. There is also a group called SL Japan which has a lot more non-Japanese speaking members ( http://sljapan.nm.land.to/). As for the JP grid, it's not actually a seperate grid but an island of 6 sims to which only the project members have access for now. I believe it will be open to everyone in October. ...Sheesh, am I the only Japanese who's checking this forum?

Snakekiss Noir also has two Japanese sims where people can buy (japanese-style) houses and do merchant activity, etc. I have momentarily forgotten the names. The snow one is cooler. *Edit: The snow Japan sim is "Orelle." Still can't think of the other one.

Japanese in SL
09-28-2005 04:49
Hey, if you do decide on a time and place, let me know about this. My kana skills are shot, and I remember only bits and pieces. The culture thing is a good idea too. Maybe we can set up a separate group for designers/builders or those just interested at a seperate time? Just a little gohan for thought.

Sorry, I've been very busy getting together the SL Community Convention. In a few weeks I'll be far less busy and I'd like to start chatting with some folks
