It's funny because you apparently don't see the irony in what you're doing. This is like a nation going to war to protest the US war in Iraq, or someone screaming profanities at someone because they used foul language. P2 Oh, and well said ![]() _____________________

Well, since all I've gotten is much ridicule and laughs over my concerns. I'm going to do what some others have suggested. I'm moving to Dreamland. The box is gone and my land is for sale. Goodbye mainland, may you be riddled with malls and clubs, for that is what you seam destined for. --Jamie Where is the land for sale? I'm buyin'. _____________________

Where is the land for sale? I'm buyin'. Lets buy it and put up lots of "Please don't put any more ugly boxes on this parcel" made out of ugly boxes! _____________________

Is there something wrong with wanting something better than a landscape that is made up of headache inducing bright neon color or plain towers?
Is there something wrong with wanting something better than your neigbors doing builds that are 2 or more stories taller than yours right at your window? Is there something wrong with wanting something better than grey boxes on the landscape? I say no, but all of you are saying yes. That is why I'm going to Dreamland. Unless you have the money to buy the land for your house and all of the land around it, it is pointless to build a nice home on the mainland. No one respects what you build, they just look at their land and go "Ah, I can build a 3 story mall here and get L$xxx off of it" without ever thinking about the house that is next to where they are placing their back wall! So, I'm going to Dreamland where I can have my house and zoning rules that will keep the landscape and viewable, not the anarchy on the mainland. I want a suburb, not the 80's version of Times Square. Oh, one last thing, if someone does want to buy my land, it's at Samia (220,110). --Jamie |

What's Ugly to You may not be ugly to others Your point is purely subjective to the opinion of the individual. There for does not hold any merit. ![]() I agree here. I hope everyone has still the right to determine what is ugly and not. I see many houses (high ones and low ones) that are ugly in my opinion.... but I realize they may be not in the eyes of the one who created it. Morwen. |

Is there something wrong with wanting something better than your neigbors doing builds that are 2 or more stories taller than yours right at your window? Is there something wrong with wanting something better than grey boxes on the landscape? ------------------------------------------------------------------- My neighbor a few houses down from me in RL painted their house what i consider to be an awful shade of pepto bismol pink... i think its ugly. However they must like it, they must be happy with it and who am i to judge? What one person calls ugly another may call beautiful. As the person with the opinion that pink is a horrible color for a house, do i then have the right to go knocking on my neighbors door and inform him of my opinion? Absolutely not. I either learn to live with neighbors who have pink houses and hope they might turn out to be nice people (which is much more important) or i move, i dont insult their style. Many many people in SL, particularly those with smaller plots, are still learning their building skills. So while you might consider that three story tower ugly... that person may consider it a source of pride.. their first real build perhaps. I agree that nothing but boxes dotting the landscape would be unfortunate, but i dont see it as realistically an issue. Most people will advance in thier skills and will create other works of art as new people continue to arrive and learn to create their own beginning pieces. The landscape will be constantly changing as it has been. And if you dont happen to like the current landscape in your particular area, the solution is simple.... move... and while you're moving, try not to hurt the feelings of the newbie next door who is looking proudly at the big box he just learned how to build. |

Do you think that supermarkets consider how ugly their buildings look, or the huge car-parks they need to put in not far from your door? Most people I know were happy with the local shop (which has been driven out of business) by the butt-ugly supermarket down the road, somehow they even got past the planning permission part, because neither they, nor apparently the local council considered the negative effects of building this big, profit hungry pile of crap supermarket down the road.

Having made my way through architecture school, I have to say many of the buildings in SL are pretty iffy. BUT. One of the things that really pissed me off during school was the sentiment that many (if not most) architects have, which is -- only those who have a good eye for beauty can build things that are good looking. Or put another way, "Anyone can build, but not just anyone can make architecture."
All that said, part of what makes SL cool is the fact that anyone CAN build part of the architecture of the game -- sure, it might not look good to me, but that doesn't stop it from being an integral part of what we all experience when we're in world. If you're hating what your neighbors are building, you have a couple of options (as have already been suggested) -- you can move to Dreamland, where it's gridded and there are zoning 'laws' [which actually makes for a kind of stepford wives feel to the place], or you can change your build to fit more with the context of what your neighbors are building, or you can protest by building something you consider ugly, just so your neighbors can see how much they've upset you. I'd say only one of these options shows true character. I've done three builds now that have had to deal with large signs that everyone had been complaining about -- by the use of a few easy design tricks, you don't even notice the signs -- AND there are still beautiful views out into the SL landscape. Last part of my two cents -- put up a tree buffer. If you've got a low-rise build, and all your neighbors have high-rises, the trees will block the view much more aesthetically than large protest signs. -Rez |

THIS IS WHY WE NEED HUBS...it will get worse before it gets better...
On my land in Samia, I have put up a protest against bad and obstructive builds. Fly by and look (Samia (228,100)) or look at the pic on SLPics (http://www.sluniverse.com/pics/pic.aspx?id=47426&sort=PictureID+desc). If more people would do this, maybe some of these mall and club owners will quit building these monstrosities on the landscape. The mainland can be a beautiful place if we make it that way. I don't want to have to move to Dreamland so I can have a nice house with nice neighbors. I may be dreaming, but that is all I have. --Jamie |

Welcome to Dreamland

Well Jamie ..
You've discovered Dreamland. Award winning architectural wonders that exist and thrive because no clubs, no malls, no monstrosities and no structures on top of your property lines. The best part is that the land costs are about 50% of similar prime land on the mainland. So what are you waiting for? _____________________
