Hello all I was in my house this PM and believe it or not I was trying out my NEW (I'm a newbie) poses. Now I KNOW if someone walks in all they see is an avatar and not the real me...BUT it's the REAL me who's making all those silly poses via my avatar!! LOL! Anyway back to the subject: A Linden walked in. No knock, no IM...just walks in. I'm new here and I've belonged to a world where our doors are NOT open to the public, so if we ARE changing our clothing or hair, no one will catch us. Is it customary for Lindens to just walk in? Can this be spoken about sometime soon? I'm not about to make a whole complaint. I actually like the person who was there and hope to remain his friend...but in the future a polite notice would be greatly appreciated. You should see what my avie looks like when she's changing hair and posing...OMG! ROFL!

There's really no easy way to announce yourself before entering a building, unless your building has a doorbell. You can't tell who's inside without looking, so even if you shout, you don't know who to address. I have a locking door on my house which is scripted to only open and close for specific people, and when it's open, it stays open. So if it's open, everyone's welcome, and if not, they're not getting in unless they yell (or cheat).

Knock Knock
12-01-2005 22:17
Before I got my locking door...most people at least would say "KNOCK KNOCK" to let me know they wanted in.
This is only common courtesy. The door I have will sound the door bell if someone is trying to get in who is not on the visitors list. Perhaps you should look into one of those. It is nice...at least you will know when someone is around. But trust me...there are tricks to get into peoples homes regardless of any door you put on...
(Lee Ludd has the door I spoke of)

I had a similar complaint here some time ago and was basically told by the forum that i have no privacy in SL
So i made a doorbell ( it is free over at SLexchange ) that puts up a big notice and IM's the owner either when someone touches it or gets close to it.
Even with that - and a house with no doors (I put a steel grate over my entrance that opens only for me) I STILL get people forcing there way (via sitting) into the house then sayng "Oh sorry - i didnt realize it was private"
Feel free to take the doorbell and good luck.

KNOCK KNOCK outside the front door are very nice to experience..
When I was new to SL.....Lovely April Firefly was the first one that did that - and I was positive surprised.. loved it and will remember it for life...
I have btw no door... I am in SL and don't believe in fences push away scripts and such...

While I was changing I had two guys walk into my house. You may not be able to knock but you may want to announce yourself in case someone is in there.

Sadly you have NO privacy whatsoever in sl The other day a friend and me were high up on a platform she has. Discussing skins and changing clothes. So there I was naked when these 'commando soliders' came waving their guns and they went to 'raid the house' on the platform. I became so mad I emergency tp'ed home, and tp'ed my friend with me. That high eject from land doesn't work, so she could do nothing except shoot them (which she didn't do - she's a nice girl - lol). Had a friend in my early sl days who were obsessed by privacy. He tried to have a home under the sea as well as several thousand meters up in the sky. Nothing helped. He still got intruders. He had a discussion with Lindens about that, and were told Linden need it that way for their liasons to come solve problems. Or something like that. I can accept Linden needs to override privacy sometimes, but why everyone else? When visiting friends, I allways ask in IMs first if it's okay I come over. And I never use the map to tp to my friends. I hate it when others do that to me. Wish that function could be disabled. Saying Knock Knock is a great thing to do

Hi,
I agree, that asking the owner inside of a private house first before getting in, is a good behaviour. I don“t think that it makes very much sense to have lockable door besides just showing people that you *wish* them to stay outside. (They still can take the camera inside your house and watch you or they can drift through your walls)
A few days ago I visited my Angel in her house when a friend of us came over and knocked the door (by saying it). Unfortunately we were busy and did not notice the knocking at the same moment. Our friend did not enter ... she left (and contacted us later). I really admire this behaviour ... it is up to you and all of us to establish this kind of common ethics.

I can't understand many of these postings. Second Life is set up in such a way that you *cannot* get complete privacy. If you don't like it, then you have to live with it.
There are ways of maximising it, though. I would suggest that probably the best way is to build very high in the sky (at the minimum, 760m), and create a scripted lift to get up there. It will be above the maximum height to which people can fly. Even then it will still be theoretically possible for people to get to your build, especially if they know it exists.

Would a script that detects people on your land who are not you and automatically sends them home be legal?
edit: I can see that there would be problems if it was at ground or near-ground level, since it would catch people flying over your land too.

LockTite Security
12-02-2005 04:58
I have now sold over 1200 Locktite Security systems in SL over he last year or better.
Privacy may not be always possible but it IS enforceable.
Though some may not like it, you, as the owner of your land, for which you pay real money every day, are entitled to some measure of protection from griefers and true jerks!
Altough my Guardian is used to totally close an area accept for who you allow, and is available in immediate, 15 second and 30 second delay versions, my Locktite Bouncer is very specific.
From ground level to 1000's of meters in the air, from the smallest plot to the largest sim, the Locktite Bouncer effectively allows you to eject and remove people who you decide are not welcome and who wont take no for an answer. On a simple private channel command just add their name to your 'unwanted' list and they are removed. Permanently. 24/7/365.
I built this system first becasue I myself was being stalked and didnt appreciate it. After many rewrites and working with numerous people, including Lindens, I can proudly say that Locktite serves the needs of this community in a responsible way that allows you to maintain some semblance of control over your land.
You pay for it. You own it. You have control over it.
Locktite Security Enjoy your Privacy!

From: Carson Hadlee From ground level to 1000's of meters in the air... <<<SNIP>>> You pay for it. You own it. You have control over it. I still haven't formed an opinion on this sort of thing at low altitudes - but I know that I do not believe that I own the airspace 40m above the ground. I'm quite concerned about security scripts active inside the normal "flight lane" altitudes.

I totally understand that concern. I myself enjoy hot air ballooning in SL..flying low and slow to take in all the sites. When a person uses a Guardian at that altitude..I wish myself that they used a 30 second warning Guardian, at which point I am usually long gone.
On the other hand ...the Bouncer is specific ONLY to those very very few people that have been abusing or griefing you. For them, I dont care where they are around or over me...I dont want them there, I have asked them to not be there..and now..they WONT be there..
As to the 40 meter limit..I dont know about South Africa, but here in America if you own land it includes all land below you to the center point of the earth, to up in the sky and into the heavens infinitely ( I saw this on one of the TV judge shows hehe).
The only few people I know who have built over 400 meters or so...risk rejection of their entire build, and loss of all objects...as I understand it cause the sim is not really meant to support objects that high.

From: Carson Hadlee From ground level to 1000's of meters in the air ... You pay for it. You own it. You have control over it. Last time I checked, land is purchased as a 2 dimensional object, with 2 coordinates, and measured in square meters. This is not the same as 3 dimensions, and measured in cubic meters. Ergo, you do NOT have complete control of the air over your space. If your product secures a building that has been constructed in the air by warning someone within a reasonable (< 20 m) proximity to the building, I am all for that. If it prohibits access through clear air space on the property, I must object. If everyone did this, no one could fly anywhere.

This is seriously something you should have kept on closed doors and spoken about with the Linden. You say you like the person and hope to remain his/her friend.. but you betray him/her by ranting in the forums cus he/she walked into your house? Also, Lindens aren't robots that all follow a preset program. They are humans behind the pixels. Mostly following some guidelines.. but damnit! Most people don't mind others walking into their house... he probably just didn't take into account some do. Saying "hey dude.. try and knock next time, will ya?" could have done alot better than crying here on the forums because he saw an ill-textured scalp or pixel nipples (that by the way you don't need to take off your clothing to put on new ones).

giggle Shadow... try building your house or club in two dimensions. Last time I checked I think that would mean you would have a VERY shallow experience... Couldn't resist that one

From: Carson Hadlee As to the 40 meter limit.. heheh - I was actually not thinking of any RL legal limitation - just the fact that SL land bans end at 40m - but even in RL I think there are limits. Doesn't each country's equivalent of America's FAA gain control at some level?

Actually no. You usually do not own mineral rights under your land, nor do you own overflight rights since the FAA controls those. In addition, you have easements that you may own, but you cannot control because the utility companies and local city governments control those.

Same here. I really wish that everyone who made these sort of scripts would at least put a minimum 5-second warning or something. I get people IM'ing me about once every 2 weeks asking why they can't get to my land. My neighbors security script simply ejects them - no message explaining why, no warning, no nothing, just BOOT! Half of the people think that it's my land or I'm ejecting them from my store, which can be very frusterating to have customers IMing me, "Why can't I visit your store? Geez, I don't even know you and you kicked me out of your store, ect". P2P will definitely be a long-awaited feature for me.

I had this problem with my first land, I built a large building on a small lot and only had about a meter worth of space past the front door into the lot next to me. They put an immediate bounce script in, which caused an interesting problem if I walked out my door too fast
