Now that I have some 20+ suggestions (I'll disqualify writing about 3rd party sites for now, as I'll usually just put those in Links of the Week), let's winnow it down to two. Vote on suggestions 1-10 in this topic...

Voting for these open for the next 7 days. After that, the next 10 nominees will be up for vote. I promise to write a story on the top nomination, and may write a story on any or all of the others, if the angle/mood/timing is right...

Dear Hamlet...

To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, Or to take arms against a sea of troubles, or in this case to take arms againt the throngs of next topics... my wishes go with as you find your top topics. TC and write onward... _____________________

Heh!
Keep voting, and encourage your friends to vote! If I can get 1000 folks to vote, I'll make this a regular, weeky or bi-weekly process-- residents nominate stories, residents vote on the one they most wanna read, and I write it. |

I would love to see the failed projects article- though a few things I am curious about... in a world like SL, how do you define a project that has "failed"?
Is this different from projects that are consentually retired by all parties involved when they decide they want to move on to other things? And what defines a project as "sucessfull"? And how long does a project have to be "sucessfull" before it can end and simply be known as a past project rather than a failed one? I also wonder if patrons of the end results of projects and the creators of the project themselves see things differently in regards to the above questions. It would be fascinating. *Endorses* _____________________

Sadly, too many people don't know about The World yet, if they did they'd probably vote.

Hey, you're free to put your pitch in for The World here (as anyone else here can for whaetver story they want)-- convince folks why it's The Story that deserves the coverage! What makes it cool or fascinating or provocative? What larger theme(s) does it convey about Second Life as an evolving community? What Big Ideas about online societies in general does it hint at? And so on...

And so, the polls are closed, and it's failed projects that shall be the subject I start researching a story on. Question is, *which* failed projects? I have a few in mind already, but to insure I don't miss any spectacular meltdowns, I'm open to suggestions.

I have one good example, but it may require speaking with a 3rd party to ensure no one gets really pissed off. ![]() _____________________

I have a better idea.
Instead of "Who/what should Hamlet write about?" we should be asking ourselves "Who should write what about Hamlet?" ![]() About time someone interviewed the interviewer, I say. _____________________

Done! Sorry, RL happened. Spent all morning in court (as a witness, long story, nothing serious) and passed out after being up almost 24 hours on 3 hours sleep. ![]() I'll attend to it when I get home today. _____________________

Eggy,
i think you have an excellent idea there! now, if only SL:UT was up and running, i'd try to do it myself.. of course, i'll keep it in mind just in case nobody else gets to tackle it by the time i get things rolling.. in which case, Hamlet.. i'll be calling if it comes to that. ![]() also, Cybin was going to suggest this, but i may as well.. how about Tartarus? i'm not sure if it's still being worked on somewhere in the background, but it had a lot of promise.. as a matter of fact, if the Tartarus team were to join with the Bedazzle team.. wow.. just, wow. |

Heh! Ryen will likely hunt me down and kill me for this, but... I watched that guy come up with project after project for over a year, and they all looked the same (shooter type thing) but with different names. I was briefly involved with at least one of them. I can't remember which or when, or if I even got around to actually doing anything of substance for it.
You see I used to practically live in Jessie, since I built and owned the Bhodi Tree Gallery to save poor newbie Bhodi the burden of paying all the taxes on it. I loved that woman, where the hell has she been? Ryen was there all the time but at first we weren't getting along very well for some reason. I was working on the Jessie Subway Project, IIRC it was just a sim-wide subway type of setting for combat to take place using the built-in damage system. I think the leader was Nicko Snow and he and Ryen hated each other. Probably cause Nicko was new to the neighborhood but filled with Lindens to hog up land and prims with. There were still some ancient WWIIOL builds lying around and due to the shortage of mature land some people had built housing there ![]() _____________________

I've known Hamlet for quite some time now, if he's ever interested in reversing the roles, I'd be happy to take up the job. ![]() -Adam _____________________

I'm still looking for Failed Projects to cover. Because this is a sensitive topic, I encourage I do want to assure people I feature in this that they'll also have a chance to talk about current projects they're working on now-- I promise to include mention of those, as well. (Especially if the projects that failed were learning experiences that help them in their current ambitions.)

re: failed projects
i have an excellent idea for this topic that will be of great interest to the community from it's hype and from the revelations it brings in regards to SL's capabilities and shortcomings and what needs to be done to get it to go where we want it to go. today i had a brief conversation with the leader of the bedazzled team, foxy xevious, in which she described china town as a success of building but a failure of the combat system. i was surprised by assessment but thought then that what a glorious failure it was , since i really enjoyed many hours of helping test the system, a carefully crafted product of many of SL's premier content creators (scriptors, builders, and texturers). i think it would be interesting to talk about this this project posthumously because i think it gives content creators and LL a lot to think about. it may have failed as a sustainable first player shooter because of problems but in my opinion it was a great success in pushing sl to some of its limits and bringing the SL client to its knees. and i'm also curious to see how the bedazzle team plans to use the discoveries of their "failure" in upcoming project, to find out what the feel SL needs to move forward to realize these projects succesfully, and what workarounds are possible in the meantime. _____________________

Here is something you might consider investigating. You might even consider being a resident advocate but guess you cant being employed by Linden labs which is perfectly understandable
![]() why is it that it is a personal matter if some officer within a group burns the groups business and the founders house? isnt abuse abuse? Is not SL alot like RL? Is there not the same evilness here as in rl? In RL , that person who did the burning would go to jail. why not in SL. Becuase this is not curtailed in sl no matter group or no group there are residents who are constantly having scripts being thrown on thier land so these evil people can still come on and build and cause damage to thier land and things. why do Lindens not care? Like i said personal or not abuse is abuse and continual abuse should be a crime personal or not personal. Lots of people are not contributing to the SL economy cause of it they take long breaks very long breaks i did myself cuase of the treatment i got. maybe investigating this might change the Linden's minds or maybe at least make them realize that abuse is abuse no matter whether it is personal or not and continuous abuse personal or not should be a crime |
