From: someone Originally posted by Darwin Appleby Sometimes there are people I meet online, and they do things that don't offend me, or really anyone around me. They do things that are inoffensively indecent, sort of like smooth jazz. Saying strange things, like coming up to me and saying "<3" before I even talk to them. So I make sure they're not diagnosed with aspergers, any form of autism, for that mater... and normally, the answer is no. It makes me wonder... who are these people in real life? And how do they function? Perhaps I have finally found someone who glows under an ultraviolet light. Just perhaps. the reason why you don't see people like that in real life is the threat of real physical violence. ...think about it...

What defines dis-courtesy compared to abuse? Is it abuse when an unknown male comes up to a female and says "Do you want a BF?" When I eventually understood that BF is is boyfriend, I was no longer certain it was abuse. It was, however, discourteous.

Jauani was right; it really is "Bump an old Korg thread" Day today.
Did I miss something? I know I haven't been on the forums for a few days, but glancing over it this morning it seems we had plenty of new drama to play with without resorting to dragging up old drama!

Courtesy missing and rudeness abounds
07-04-2005 06:23
I completly agree with the comments about lack of courtesy. I have been a SL member for over a year - although I had a leave of absence for several months until last month. I have always noticed some basically rude people, but it does seem to have got worse lately.
For instance in the four or five weeks that I have been back in world: 1) Building my house and this guy just walks up and starts walking around in my house as I am building it. Seems "surprised" when I suggest that if he has a question he could ask me instead of simply walking in. I had fitted locks on some of the doors and he kept trying them and complaining that he couldn't get in. Now I have had this type of thing before, but this time it has happened about 10 times in the last four or five weeks.
2) The most recent "criminal" act - the type of which I believe people should be ejected from SL permanantly for - was yesterday. I was quietly building a large zepelin airship when this guy with spikey hair just bumped into me. Now we have all bumped into someone accidently on occasion, sometimes simply caused by slow graphics and not seeing the person. This wasn't the case here though as the idiot proceeded to turn around an repeatedly bump into me whilst demanding "you give head now to me!" Not only was he rude, abusive, confrontational and asking for a "service" that I certainly had no wish to provide, but he had the worst grammar I have ever heard! It took me a couple of minutes to actually eject and ban him from my land as he would not stop bashing into me and knocking me half way across the sim!
Most of the poeple I have met here are decent people who you can expect to treat you as a human being (or furry animal if that is your wish), but there are the minority that treat SL as a playground for criminal activity that they would be (fortunately) too scared to try in RL.

Timmins, re: your point 1, this is apparently not a case of lack of courtesy. It appears that the opinion of a seeming majority of SL residents that you have no right to - nor do you deserve - any privacy whatsoever in SL. You certainly won't find any sympathy on the forums; indeed you'll probably be told to fork over $195 for a private island of your own that you can hide from the world if you expect any level of privacy at all, or told to leave SL altogether if you don't want to interact with the rest of the community 24/7 on their terms on your land. They vehemently defend and reserve the right to come barging into your build on your land any time they feel like it unannounced and get all indignant and abusive or abuse report you if you dared to have any countermeasure to stop them doing it. And then they come to the forums to complain about your rude behaviour.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville yeah, what did happen to courtesy? It was beginning to poke its head up from the ground, but was handily trampled by necroposters bumping age old threads.
