I am sitting in an Advanced Building Class that was scheduled and listed on teh Events listing and I am alternating between being aghast and being steamed.
AS I said this is a class. Yet two people flew an aircraft into the middle of the buidling floor/classroom floor area, one person managed to "ghost" a box around eh instructor and couldn't move it (seems to have been placed there deliberately), another couple decided to spam te class chat by holdinga private conversation -- just out of range of the class to no tbe in it and ye tclose enough to spam the class chat.
Then there is the "look at me" avatars-wearing person who decided to stand right in fron tof me.. he walked up to me, stopped, turned around and just frealking stood there! ikee I didn't exist and was not sitting on a fencerail attending the class.
Unfreaking believable.
This is listed as an Advanced class and the first question was "how do I link?" Now, I don't know abou you, but that is not an advanced class question. So much for covering the scheduled material at an appropriate level.
I know I sound like an old grouch. But this seems to be a simple lack of sourtesy or consideration of others. It's one thing ot tick pff neighbors when you own land. It's another to screw around with a public class.
Okay.. this is essentially a "vent" and totally unconstructive... but dang it.. I am paying too much for this kind of ridiculousness ... in real life people can be rude... but they don't simply ignore other people and ehir effects on oters (mostly). WTF?

I was there too, but left because I got tired of the nonsence. I don't mind noob questions, but people deliberatly trying to disrupt the class are another matter. Had I been there on a trial membership I'd have thought "This place is a chaotic zoo" and never joined

The University of Second Life was created to combat issues like this. The Lindens won't provide an area for Instructors, away from the newbie areas, so I left the Linden Instructor group and created the University of Second Life in Phobos to create a lag-free area for instructors to hold classes. Please ask your instructors to take a look at our facilities and see if they'd like to hold their classes there.

Some of this will go away when the kiddies go back to school.

I attended this class as well. After hearing so many immature players spam the chat with their nonsense, I started to mute them one by one (first time I mute someone). Unfortunately, spamming the chat wasn't enough as some of them proceeded to rez boxes around the instructor (someone even rezzed a cage-like box around her which then ghosted), bump into the instructor and wear the biggest avatars they could find in order to create a nuisance.
I agree with Olympia, if I would have been new to SL, that kind of behavior might have dissapointed me enough for me not to join.
While I give props to the instructor for being so patient and like the idea of the classes being held in SLU (or the U of SL), I still think that this type of situation should still be corrected by either giving the instructors some land editing privileges (so they can use the banning tools on these sorts of players) or by having a Liason present during classes. These situations discourage instructors from giving classes and others from assisting the classes as well.

Sadly, this type of behaviour riddles just about every virtual online community. Anyone who has ever tried running a 'guild meeting' in an online game knows what I'm talking about.
I'm new to SL(a whole 2 days!), granted, but it's a shame there isn't an official place provided to prevent this kind of thing. Something tells me I'm glad I couldn't make it to the class.

I heard courtesy was available in-game. I found it one day but the vendor was broken Seriously, all that needs to happen is to allow instructors, or mentors as well, to have Freeze, Kick and Ban privs on the land. That will solve the problem mostly...

The griefing was particularly bad at that event, and I think I figured out why. The event was on a Saturday night, so that divides the crowd into two groups.
Group one was into SL and building therin enough to dedicate part of their Saturday night to attending a class.
Group two was people who had nothing better to do on a Saturday night than to log in to SL and annoy people.

Yes, so sad. I have been to three classes so far and on each one of them, there has been someone that appeared to have as his/her sole purpose making the instructor (and the rest of the class) miserable.
I must say I admire all three of the instructor's patience. Not one of them lost their cool! My hat off to them...

Seriously though, I think Olympia's right, well mostly. The think is, it's not just on Saturdays... Had a nice friendly griefer in my SL Basics class on Sunday too... ok, ok, I know, there's not much to do on a Sunday afternoon either, but well you know. Fortunately, last night's contest went well... I won't say there were no disruptions, but none that managed to spoil the fun. To those that came, thank you, to those who won prizes - and there were a few... congratulations. OK, suggestions... While mentors and instructors need to use Linden land and are therefore tied to relying on Lindens (though, look at this , we have extended Liaison cover now), the rest aren't. You can hold your events on your own land, or if you haven't a suitable area, there are several people who have arenas for hire, and will gladly help. Look them up ... As a starter, there're two arenas in Mocha, there's Damien's in Phobos... and many many many more.

I went to my very first, very basic scripting class the other night, led by a great teacher.
Thanks, Carly!
One attendee in particular caught my attention....I don't know quite what it was about him....oh, wait, that was it. It was the sword he carried in his hand, and the flying moped he wore....sideways....on his head. Even so, he might not have attracted my notice, except that he eventually tired of the sword, and changed it out for a paintball gun, which he proceeded to shoot all around the assembled class. Just to be certain that his charms had not gone un-noticed, he then stood directly in front of the instructor's viewscreen, blocking the class's ability to see what she was trying to show us.
I checked his profile, and lo and behold, he'd just been "born" earlier that day. I IM'd him, to tell him how he could detach the flying moped from his head, and that he'd need to choose "sit" if he wanted to use the bike. His response? "I meant to do that"
I'm a newbie myself, and have probably misstepped in matters of courtesy, but sometimes I'm amazed at the caliber of people that come in to SL. Fortunately, most that I've encountered have been great; friendly, generous, willing to offer assistance and advice. Bravo to the instructor for totally keeping cool.

Sometimes there are people I meet online, and they do things that don't offend me, or really anyone around me. They do things that are inoffensively indecent, sort of like smooth jazz. Saying strange things, like coming up to me and saying "<3" before I even talk to them. So I make sure they're not diagnosed with aspergers, any form of autism, for that mater... and normally, the answer is no. It makes me wonder... who are these people in real life? And how do they function? Perhaps I have finally found someone who glows under an ultraviolet light. Just perhaps.

It makes me wonder... who are these people in real life? And how do they function? In my not inconsiderable experience in online communities, going back to 1992, I have found that the courteous, polite people are the ones (like myself) with Asperger's Syndrome or similar disorders, and the troublemakers are the NeuroTypicals. For those of us for whom face-to-face social interactions are fraught with difficulties, online communities are the answer to our prayers. We behave ourselves because we value these places as the only way we can express ourselves to others. The disrupters are content to disrupt because - well, why not? After all, they can destroy our worlds because they have a happier life in the so-called "real" world. (This post is not intended to slur those who are both courteous and neurotypical.)

No courtesy & deliberate harrassment
07-15-2004 08:37
Im sitting here shaking my head in disbelief.... the deliberate disruption of other peoples good times/events/ and or classes has reached a level even the last elevator in hell wont go down to. Ya know what happened to me this past weekend? ( of course you dont so I better tell you) Over the weekend a friend of mine Kovai ( great real estate agent) helped me to get a nice big area 24,880sq ft so I can build a fun pirate cove, have friends over, and hold fun events. We ( me and several of my friends) were so excited we went over to my new land - some of us sitting around.. others dancing with glee in celebration. Not five minutes later we were attacked by several people flying over repeatedly shooting us over and over again. We dont know those people shooting and we weren't in anyones way considering the size of my new property. I hadn't built anything and wasn't obstructing anyones view either. So anyway... to make a long story short ( and this has been longer rambling than it should lol) every day since then I've had incidents of people flying over and shooting. Yesterday it happened while I was sitting on the beach watching the sunset - just sitting by myself - enjoying the sunset. What had I done to deserve being shot this time? Can someone explain this to me? Griefers suck donkey d___!!!!!

Sorry to hear of your problems Loreal -
Griefers have not yet found the Way - they wonder aimless in lost days of separateness and keep bumping into their shadows.
Don't despair for as the Tao Of Second Life says:
"To taste the melt-less ice cream, live your Second Life dream undeterred by the ignorance of griefers."
