Macbook Pro user chiming in. SL is very crashy, like pretty much every time. It's so freakin annoying it makes me want to throw the machine across the room.

I have to second this. I'm on a MacBook Pro with 2GB of RAM, and it crashes *all the time*. Plus, since I started using a 20-inch Apple Cinema Display as my second display (instead of a standard 19-inch), it seems that the graphics quality has plummeted. My avatar is constantly all black (until I edit appearance; it changes back to black as soon as I exit).

Very crashy since last update- Have had to force quit more times than I can count, and one time, while running in fullscreen, it froze my whole system!

O_O Holy $#*%!!!

I'm blaming my lack of adequate RAM.

Lindens Quit Stringing Mac Users Along
10-07-2006 19:50
Unfortunately, the amount of RAM you have may not be the issue. I have a brand-new Mac Pro 2.66 dual xeon with 3gb of memory, and SL kernel panics pretty much every time. I can diddle with the video settings, memory configuration, etc, etc, and when my video card loads too many textures, bang, the black shade slides down and I'm told to reboot in 4 languages.

It's very disconcerting that we should all have such marvelous, high-performance machines, and yet here is a situation where (as far as we can tell) the only reason that we have to tolerate crashes, slow rezzing, and crap framerates is because of the apathy of the Linden programmers towards a segment of their userbase who I dare say would be some of their most vocal supporters... if only they would commit the resources necessary to ensure the same level of quality as we find in the Windows release.

Now, if this were 1996 and Apple were still dragging itself out of the mire of slow, unreliable, lackluster hardware, commanding less than 3 percent of the computer industry, I would understand this half-assed effort. However, here ten years later there is no excuse to marginalize what is a very active and growing group of users-- working with machines which are (in many cases) computationally superior to these low-end PC's.

Really, now, Lindens-- if you are going to produce a Mac release, let's try to put one together that is not embarrasingly bad? If you can't manage to do it, then don't bother in the first place, and we can all be happy with our limited options in intel virtualization. But one way or the other QUIT STRINGING US ALONG.

This isn't Linden's problem if you have an Nvidia card (the 7300). I had the same problems as you until I got a Radeon X1900 card. Not only is the card insanely fast, but it does not crash SL at all when running over 2GB of RAM.

I'll post more about it separately.

Hi bethanee
i had been following the trials of the MacPro vanguard which seemd to suggest that the situation had become useable with the config of machine that you have - so i purchased and took home today my new MacPro 2.66Mhz, 2G RAM, 1900XT, and it has crashed on launch. I cant even get a login page.
This is a new SL install on a new machine, and i cant even get in. At least a Macbook of my girlfriend could use SL.
Not sure why your machine works with the same config as mine , whilst mine doesn't even start ?

Hmmm

An interesting follow on

I installed the older version of SL that had been working ok on the macbook ( 1.12.1.9 from september) and it allowed me to get a login window and started to load up However it then stated that i HAD to download the updated version to use the system ! Otherwise it provided the option to quit. I duly took the download/update option and when i tried to launch that it tells me there is a critical error and i have to download the latest version on the website. So back to square one. Even though the application after updating shows it is 1.12.2.9 !

Wow. I have no idea what is going on. I was able to get the game to at least run for a few minutes on my 1st Mac Pro with the Nvidia card, and I never had a problem with the 2nd Mac Pro.

What else did you install?

The kind gentleman at the shop helped me load on BootCamp and Parallels plus Windoze and that may be causing some issues, since i have a problem booting up to. ( Have to hold down the OPTION key when i start up every time) That problem has a tech guy coming tomrrow, so i will post back my findings. I also have Aperture, Firefox , Office

I have to say coming from an old iMAC and a new Macbook 2Ghz / 1Gig RAM, i am underwhelmed at the moment on both comparatives with the MACPRO, but will give it a little time before growling more...

It seems to crash a fair bit - and quit programs with some frequency.

The latest upgrade does seem to be more problematic from the various posts i have seen
