My Macbook Pro keeps freezing up while playing SL since the last upgrade. Is anyone else having that trouble? I have to do a complete restart each time.

Thanks,

I'm *occasionally* getting SL application crashes for no apparent reason, never really had that before, I usually bug report them each time though.

Doesn't (and shouldn't in good old Unix) freeze the Mac though, just an SL crash, dunno if that's at all relevant. You should be able to just force quit SL and continue...

If it does crash the whole Mac, maybe a vid card issue ? I haven't really a clue.

Not crashed at all, myself. A few connection issues that need a relog but that's it, and not particularly more recently.

know how to option-click on things around the room to direct/focus the camera? that'll ping the assetservers for that object's textures. to a lesser extent that can help with grey avis... but the only surefire solution (just retested last night with a friend at a club:) is for the poor grey visitor to tp out and back again.

the ol' 'walkabout' just doesn't ping for images as vigorously as it used to, but they are workin' on it!:)

Yes, I've had crash issues. Just the SL game, not my computer. It's been better the last few days though.

Phooey! I'm disgusted.

I have upgraded my (2-year old) G5 RAM to 2GB. I have spent $400 on a ATI 800XT graphics card. I have abandoned DSL for cable. And it STILL is taking me several minutes to rez into new regions. My friend has a cheap $700 Dell system and she has instantaneous rezzes! Phooey! Does anyone know if a duo-processor G5 would be any faster? I dont want to throw away yet more $$$ if it turns out that my woes are just because I'm playing the game on a Mac in the first place. Any advice/info would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. - Cecilia

I have had two unexpected crashes on my PB G4, 10.3.9 in the last week, where my avatar suddenly froze up.

Crashed SL only, no need to reboot, just relogged SL.

...heya cecilia!..the bad news, i'm afraid, is that mac support, and especially PPC mac support, has been steadily deteriorating since SL 1.8...

...i have a very similar system to your own - dual 2GHz G5, 1GB RAM, 256MB nvidia 6800 ultra, 3 Mb/sec DSL - and performance and stability are a joke compared to the windows client on my friend's identically-spec'ed PC...i think what hurt the most was that when i finally afforded to upgrade my system ram and videocard, i only got two week's smooth use out of it before the 1.10 client hit and absolutely crippled my machine's performance, and even arbitrarily disabled the avatar vertex program and advanced avatar rendering options...

...on a good day, in a moderately built-out sim, i manage 3-5 FPS while moving, interpsersed with periodic freeze-ups where a single frame may last two to fifteen seconds...about one to three times per hour the 'frozen' frame exceeds my patience, thirty seconds or longer, so i generally force-quit and restart SL at that point...speculation is that this is an artifact of a bug in 1.10's occulsion culling algorithm, as the problem goes away if i'm facing a reasonably-unbuilt direction or don't rotate new objects into my field of view...

...regardless, LL has done next to nothing to remedy these sorts of collectively-crippling bugs since their 1.7 mac client fix six months ago, and i'm not optimistic that's going to change...

Same here Scarlet. On a Macbood Pro too. Never had trouble before but all I have to do is look at a profile in a high lag area and the sl application will lock right up. It really sucks..

The profile problem is apparently a known bug with the latest release -- not just a Mac issue.

I'm not sure why your G5 systems have trouble. I'm running on a G4 Powermac Dual 1.4 with 2 meg ram and upgraded video card (Radeon 9600 w/256).

SL seems to run very well for me, crashes here and there, but not huge. I run photoshop, itunes and a few other programs along with it constantly and it does quite well. Yesterday, i did crash a lot and finally cleared the SL cache and rebooted my entire system, which I hadn't done in weeks and that seemed to clear things up.

I guess I'm glad I skipped the g5 powermacs--can't wait till the intel mac towers arrive :)

My Macbook Pro has been doing well. I spent about 3 hours on it yesterday with no perceivable issues.

iMac G5 crashes
07-29-2006 04:50
Hi everyone

My iMac G5 had crashed only twice in the the two years I'd had it, but I've had about 6 crashes since joining SL on 17 July, including 2 today. I've noticed that shutdown takes longer as well. As for SL crashing and freezing - it happens so often that I've come to look on it as an integral part of the game!

I'm worried that I may be damaging my lovely iMac - nothing is worth that.

i have an intel G5 and i have to quit twice for it to successfully log out :/ when SL isn't running i can have up to 10 progs running at the same time, if SL is running i can barely have firefox or itunes running in the background.

Do you mean an Intel iMac? If so thats really strange. Its almost the same specs as Macbook Pros, and my Macbook Pro runs great. I run SL and run tons of other apps all at once and I cant even tell SL is running. Maybe you have a really low amount of ram? Or maybe need to know what computer you actually have since theres no such thing as an "intel G5"

thank you for your commentary miss particular *rollseyes, lol*, since we're playing specifics here it's the iMac Intel Core Duo, and my ram meets the suggested requirements for playing SL, i was going to upgrade but have some friends who are also mac-users on SL as wel, they said the ram upgrade didn't make a difference. *shrugs*

I think it depends on the amount if RAM you have and how much you're planning on upgrading. For me, a RAM upgrade made a WORLD of difference.

Just to help out, I'm on a new, basic level Macbook Pro. The RAM it came with was sufficient to start and run the SL client, but not to really use it without serious frustration. My upgrade has made it not only usable, but now I can run other applications in the background without even feeling it. Life is sweet with more RAM.

yes, crashing a lot now

Crashing all the time now - never used to. It's getting so bad that I really can't be bothered logging back in all the time. Oh well, maybe I'll get some work done instead...

I'm running a Powerbook G4 (1.5ghz and 768 ram) with 10.4.7 and I freeze occasionally. But it's very rare and I am able to get right back on afterwards.

how do you clear your SL cache?

Anyone? Anything that could further improve my SL/G5 performance would be a good thing!

It's in preferences, under the network tab.

There's also a way to automatically purge the cache on each startup (with the "-purge" option), but I can't find the name and location of the text file to create and put those options into. Anyone?
