Hey Raymond, please see what Brent said here:
We've fixed the broken Mac OS X 10.3.9 login issue and anticipate a viewer-only deploy Thursday (May 25, 2006). However, there is also an occlusion bug that has to be rolled into the same release. Depending on if we can get it fixed and QA'd in time, the deploy may be pushed back to Friday (May 26, 2006) to include that fix. SOURCE _____________________

I'm watching the build process carefully. We don't yet have a candidate for the deploy. I'll let you all know when we do!

Thank you!

Any communication during this trying time is appreciated. And for those of us who don't understand all your terms, what is a candidate?

A candidate is a build we think is ready for the public. We'll bang on it more and if it's good, it's shipped! Usually the release candidate is put out to public preview and we watch for bugs. Essentially, its the version we believe doesn't have any showstopping or critical bugs (bugs which either make Second Life unusable for our Residents* or bugs that make it really hard to use SL).
*yeah, I know I probably opened myself up to flaming right there! ![]() _____________________

So while you guys chase an "occlusion bug", those of us who are completely locked out by the OS X 10.3.9 bug, which you say you have already fixed have to remain locked out of SL?
That's really thoughtful of you, Brent Linden. I just love the way you and your colleagues attend to "bugs which ... make Second Life unusable for our Residents". I can't use SL AT ALL, and I'm decidedly pissed off that you and others at Linden Labs seem to think that doesn't matter. *Sigh* Yeah, I know. The occlusion bug's important to fix too. But how would you like it if you were locked out of your office, unable to work, and I was standing there with the keys in my hand, but unwilling to let you in the door until I finished dealing with someone else's problem? I run several businesses in SL, and I can't get in to do my work there. I can't even explain to most of my customers why their questions and issues and building contracts are apparently being ignored. _____________________

By the way, if this "occlusion bug" is what I think it is (causing huge CPU spikes and horrid slow down), you won't want to log in until it is fixed. It makes the game unusable after a time (see my post on the issue).
But it is usuable enough at least to IM people... so I understand your pain. -B I wonder if turning off culling in the debug window wil help, hmm.... |

Update: We have a candidate with fixes for high-priority bugs (Mac OS X 10.3.9, low-end video cards (these people can get in but crash within 5 minutes), low-end machines stuttering, and a few other high-priority fixes. We're running it through QA now and -- barring any problems -- should be able to release it today.
Thanks for your patience! _____________________

Brent and the others... I am really disappointed about the new update so far. (for Mac and my laptop PC)
BUT I'm really gratefull for all the hard work. I (and others I'm sure) are gratefull because you are trying your best. Working hard and well... mistakes can happen... escpecially with computers!!! And OS 10.3.9 people (like me) think about it... there is a lot of software we can't use because PC people don't bother thinking about the Maccers! (Offcourse we have the best so we tolerate it... because we know Macs are better ![]() So APPLAUS to the hard working Mac Lindoners... I hope I can log in soon with my Mac and I especialy hope it will be a lagfree and fast experience!!! |

10.4.6 Rocks
05-25-2006 16:58
As with many issues regarding operating systems, older versions of any OS may not perform well, or even be compatible with newer game clients.
You might consider updating your MacOS to the more current version. 10.4.6 runs SL very well |

As with many issues regarding operating systems, older versions of any OS may not perform well, or even be compatible with newer game clients. You might consider updating your MacOS to the more current version. 10.4.6 runs SL very well I would imagine it does. But why in the world should I blow $130 USD to update the OS on an early 2005 Mac Mini, a system that is likely to be unusable anyway in just another couple of updates here? I don't have the money for the upgrade, so it's academic. I was trying to earn enough money to repace my computer with something that might last more than just another year. But I can't now, until the Lindens let me back in. _____________________

05-25-2006 17:30
The release candidate didn't fly, so we're baking up a new one now. We'll get it QA'd and out to you all Friday before noon SLT (May 26, 2006).
Please don't kill me. _____________________

Mac OS 10.3.9 users, and Linden workers...
05-25-2006 17:47
So Brent, and all Lindens, thanks for your patients-although us Mac OS 10.3.9 users are loosing it, with moments of crying, bursts of irritability, pouting and hissy fits, (to the point of threating to sell our sweet ibooks and power books to afford a G5 intel processor or a Mac upgrade)... we will wait. Like an overseas flight-we wait....
As of many of the users of Mac OS 10.3.9 wait all day and night- staring at this page, we sometimes go back to working on other not- as- addicting- programs like Photoshop(ie: Making avatar shirts that say: Im a SL Late Updater, Will you patiently wait on a Mac user?) composing painfully bad music on Garage Band with didgeridoos,-naming the song, "Watching Hitchcock while I wait for my Second Life"., editing the next SL block buster hit on imovie, constructing frustrated animations for avatars in Poser, or...trying to attend to our real lives like eating, sleeping, and doing real work, but all the while...having this site set up as the desk top picture, constantly re checking the status.... But now we know the news. So until tommorrow, bye forum screen. |

No, I won't kill you, Brent. But I recently built a nice dungeon I could let you rot in for a few days... *sigh* Guess I'll go make some seamless cloth textures. At least I know those will be ready to sell when I get back, and I don't need access to SL to check the seams, like on all my new dress designs that are now on hold. Seriously, I *do* appreciate the fact that you have people working long and hard at fixing this the right way. Really. I'd much rather the client be stable when you give it to us. But right now, I'd give a lot just to be able to peek at the notecards in my inventory, so I could see the details of the orders I could be working on, while I'm locked out. Or to be able to turn on the IM to e-mail link for my account, so I would have some way to communicate with my customers... _____________________

Hi Ceera!
I just enabled your IM to Email link for you. I hope that helps! I can also hijack your account and fetch the notecards for you and email them to the email address we have on file for you if you like. Please let me know soon (about to leave for the day). _____________________

Thanks Brent. That's sweet of you. At least now my customers can reach me, and I should be able to reply to them.
But to find the few notecards that I need, you'd have to weed through quite a few others. I fear I couldn't direct you to any one folder and say "Give me the ones that say "blah blah" in the title". And honestly? There's several I'd be embarrassed for you to read! It would be like having a stranger looking through my dresser, and knowing they were seeing all my silky underthings, *and* my diary! ![]() I'll manage without the notecards. I'm making some Chinese silk seamless fabrics right now, that will keep me quite busy till you get us back on line. _____________________

DON'T JUST STARE AT THE SCREEN>>> SCREAM!!! (but not at Brent)

But now we know the news. So until tommorrow, bye forum screen. Ohhh, if only it were that easy!! Those of us who are really hooked, need a place to scream! We'll come to the forum maybe 2 or 3 times tonight, hoping against hope that some nerd at LL decided it was his duty to stay up all night and get this done. We'll sit at our computers, boot up SL, and stare at the startup menu. We'll even try to Log in 10 or 12 times in a row, noticing that the progress bar goes further and further each time, but in actuality nothing is advancing. Then we'll wander the forums, spouting off angrily on subjects we know and care little about. A good night to lambast day traders, I think. Brent, for one, has had more than his share. We'll moan, try to work, and drink to excess...we'll load up our favorite in world radio station, and call our best friends to skype with them while they're in world....ahhh yes, all night we suffer. I find it hurts less if I stare at my friends list on the SL main page....NOT!!! Why did they have to have that feature anyways...."look, here's all your friends in word, while you, for some reason, are in your browser, you poor, poor fool!" More than one suicide will be attempted tonight... More than one new Mac will be ordered..... More than one copy of OS Tiger will be sold.... and I'll find another thread on which to post my half hysterical innanities, the only thread between me and my world of choice. |
